McPhillips/Tierney win Mor Oil Galway Summer Rally 2010
Posted: August 30, 2010 1:02 PM
The 2010 Mor Oil Galway Summer Rally promised a great day of rally action with a packed entry list and it certainly did not disappoint the large crowds of spectators that descended on Loughrea. Gary McPhillips and Mark Tierney in a Ford Escort Mk2 lead the rally from start to finish and went to win by 16 seconds from Robert Barrable and Damien Connolly in a Ford Focus WRC. It was Barrable’s debut rally in a World Rally Car and a huge performance from the young man who had the winning co-driver from the 2009 Mor Oil Galway Summer Rally sitting with him.
Manus Kelly and Donal Barrett came home 3rd overall in a Ford Escort Mk2, ahead of Camillus Bradley and Crawford Henderson who were a further 21 seconds behind in another Mk2. Shane Maguire in his dad Niall’s, Subaru Impreza N11 with co-driver Enda Sherry were 5th overall and Group N winners. Tom Flaherty and Patrick Curley in another Mk2 fought a good battle with Ross Forde and Paul Horan in a Mitsubishi Evo 9, for best Galway Motor Club crew. Flaherty and Curley won the day with a comfortable margin of some 26 seconds. A credible performance from Ross Forde on his first rally in a 4 wheel drive car. PJ McDermott and Paul Goodman in a Subaru Impreza WRC S11 had an early end to the rally, crashing out on stage 5.
Gary McPhillips and Mark Tierney were also crowned “ GRP4 Fabrications King of the Mk2” and pick up a voucher for 2000 euro worth of GRP4 products for their trouble. Eamon Dervan and David Gardiner brought their Mk2 home, 13th overall and second in class 13.
Martin Creaven and Chris Crowe won the Historic Rally in a Ford Escort Mk1. Cal McCarthy and Eamon Dullea won the junior rally in a Honda Civic. Ray Cunningham and Robbie Ward won the Mini Challenge in an Austin Mini.
The rally prizegiving was held in the lavish surroundings of The Lough Rea Hotel and Spa. Galway Motor Club and Mor Oil would like to thank everyone who helped run a very enjoyable rally weekend.

Wright Returns to Galway for R2 Test
Posted: August 29, 2010 4:50 PM
Newly crowned Fiesta Sport Trophy Champion, Stephen Wright returns to Galway this weekend to tackle the Mór Oil, Galway Summer Rally. Wright and co-driver Paul McGee claimed their maiden Fiesta victory this February in the Safety Direct Galway International Rally, but return to tackle the summer event in a left hand drive Ford Fiesta R2.
The Killyhevlin Hotel sponsored crew’s prize for taking the Fiesta crown is an all expenses paid drive on the Tour of Flanders in Belgium. They will use this weekend’s event to get used to the R2 and also get to grips with left hand drive. It will be a steep learning curve for the Monaghan native, but a challenge that Stephen is relishing.
"I'm really looking forward to getting out in the R2 Fiesta but I know it won't be easy making the switch to left hand drive, never mind getting into a strange car. I'll use the first two loops to get comfortable in the car and hopefully be able to push on a bit over the last few stages. It's important to get to the end of the rally because I want to be in the best possible position for Belgium."
The Mór Oil Summer Rally gets underway this Sunday with ceremonial start in the heart of Loughrea town.

McLelland Rallying to miss Lurgan Park, But plan contest Galway Summer Rally
Posted: July 13, 2010 5:45 PM
Due to Business Commitments, Billy McLelland has been forced not to compete in Lurgan Park but has decided to enter the Galway Summer Rally.
It was a disappointing decision to make (said Billy) not to go to Lurgan Park as its a great rally to take part in where you are up against a mixture of the best competition that Northern Ireland has to offer.
Billy is hungry for more on the Emerald Isle to make up for the disappointments of the Non finish in the West Cork, and the Non starts of the Rally Of The Lakes & Ravens Rock Rally.
Billy Also Commented, “I talked to my Co-Driver Alistair and he told me about the Galway Summer. Even thought it is not a round of the Dunlop National Championship, it will play a key part for me."
