Posted: March 29, 2010 10:01 PM

This Easter Weekend see’s the Birr & District Motor Club hold its National Championship Grass Surface Autocross in memory of Billy Cavanagh Modreeny who died recently. Billy was a founder member of the Birr & District Motor Club along with winning the National Autocross Championship for a record of Six years in a row from 1979 to 1984 driving his hand built Rover V8 Special. An accolade in which a lot of drivers tried to equal, but never achieved since or before. It will be interesting to see this weekend how the V8 Special will perform in the hands of siblings Dorothy, William and John. Billy had a very friendly personality and was always very approachable for help and advice on all matters in life varying from Rally Cars to Table Tennis. Our prayers and thoughts are with the Cavanagh family at this time.

Autocross is car racing in a field on a track against the clock. The track is marked using flags and if a driver hit a flag a 5 Second penalty is applied. This weekends Autocross will be held in Killeen near Birr close to Killeen Bearings. Killeen is 3 Miles from Birr on the Portumna Road (N65). This years National Autocross Championship is being sponsored by D & B Windows Waterford.

Leading entries confirmed for the Easter Weekend double header which takes place on Saturday and Sunday include David Fallon & Chris Culleton (Specials), Ger Brennan (Fiesta), Brian Keegan (Fiesta), Dominic Girvin & Ronan Judge (Peugeot 205) along with the aptly named Driver family from Bray Paul, Barry & Niamh in their Honda Civic. Niamh is current Autocross Ladies Champion.

There is a strong local entry confirmed for this Autocross which includes the Cavanagh Family William, John and Dorothy and their cousin Charlie who is also from Modreeny. Dorothy’s husband Eoin Woods is also competing this weekend. Rathcabbin’s Trevor Hogan a nephew of Billy Cavanagh along with John Maher will also compete this weekend.

Nenagh drivers Whitby Moynan (Special), David Forde (Subaru) and local Puckane Peugeot dealer Andrew Slattery (Peugeot 205) will all join in the fun in Killeen this weekend. Borris in Ossory will be well represented with Frank Dwyer, Kevin Finlay and Barry Foyle all sharing a Peugeot 206. Some Car!!! Autocross debutants this weekend will include Templemore’s Paul O’Brien and John Kinahan in a Honda Civic along with Roscrea driver Ronan Shanhan also in Honda Civic.

Forestry Rally experts Mick Nevin from Blueball in the Garahy Tractors Ford Escort and Tristan Horan in the Pat Horan Motors Ford Ka will also try there hand this weekend. Promising Killeen driver Jonathon Carroll will also be competing in his first Grass Autocross in his Opel Corsa. The Higgins family from Birr Gary, Alan & Liam jnr are all competing this weekend if the cars are all ready in time. Darragh Egan from The Pike will use his ultra reliable Mini for the occasion.
