Lunch with Solberg for Vital Equipment winners

The attractions at this year's Vital Equipment Run to the Sun competition keep on growing, with the company arranging an exclusive lunch date with the Petter Solberg Rally Team when it takes two winners to this year's Rally d'Espana. The winning drivers and co-drivers will have lunch at the team's service area and hopefully, meet the 2003 World Rally Champion.

The competition will see the winning driver and co-driver from the Junior categories of the BTRDA and Scottish Rally Championship attend the penultimate round of the FIA World Rally Championship as guests of Vital Equipment, which itself distributes the control fuel for the series.

Arguably the most charismatic personality currently in the WRC, Solberg is currently in the third year of running his own challenge within the series. As such, the winners will be treated to a unique experience, having lunch in one of the most relaxed yet professional environments in the sport.

Currently, Ashley Slights from York is leading the BTRDA Junior Driver standings, with 88 points, ahead of Tom Cave on 77 and Matt Griffin with 67. In the Scottish Rally Championship, Liam Harkness has a five-point advantage over Gareth White, 24 points to 19 with Scott MacLean third with 18.

Commenting, Vital Equipment Managing Director Alistair Roberts said; "I am delighted that Petter and the Petter Solberg team have agreed to host our winners for lunch over the course of the event. The team is extremely hospitable and I would have expected nothing less from Petter and his colleagues.

"I hope that they will also be able to meet Petter himself, as he is an amazing personality and one of the most welcoming drivers around. But of course, that will all depend on how the rally is unfolding for him and the team.

"The competition is very close in the Junior class of both series at the moment; looking at the points, it could go any number of ways. I certainly won't be booking any flights to Spain for a while!"

SRC moves to ensure "close competition" - List of WRC Cars Allowed

The organisers of the Hankook MSA Scottish Rally Championship have announced revised technical regulations designed to ensure the popular series remains attractive to the widest possible range of competitors.

From next season, the series will restrict the level of technology in cars eligible to score championship points.

The aim is to limit the performance advantage which can be gained by cars using technology designed for the highest level within the World Rally Championship.

The restriction will also apply to vehicles using this technology outwith the original WRC car chassis.

The SRC has drawn up a list of eligible vehicles based on the original homologation expiry date before extensions were applied.

From 2011, the only WRC cars permitted to score championship points will be those detailed below:

The criteria will be reviewed periodically, and there will be a minimum of six months notice regarding any additions to the list of eligible WRC cars.

The championship Management Committee will appoint a panel to rule on eligibility matters.

It will have the right to exclude any non-homologated car deemed to be using ineligible technology from scoring championship points.

However, “prohibited” cars will still be eligible for points in constituent events of the SRC, providing their regulations allow.

Neil Shanks, chairman of the Hankook MSA Scottish Rally Championship, commented:
“This regulation is being introduced to try to ensure that the Scottish Rally Championship remains attainable to the widest possible spectrum of competitors, and not only to those with the highest budget”.

“The proposal was put out to our registered competitors for consultation earlier this year, and following this exercise the championship management committee has decided to introduce this regulation for the 2011 season.”

“This season, we've again seen record championship registrations, and record entry levels across the six counting events completed so far”.

“We understand that this decision may not be universally popular, but we must ensure that the championship remains strong, with healthy competition throughout the field”.

Mr Shanks added that the decision had been taken now as it does not affect any competitor, or vehicle, currently competing regularly in the championship.
