Rally Cancelled

Posted: November 29, 2010 12:51 PM

The Donegal Motor Club regrets that the Limelight Mini Stages Rally 2010 was unable to be completed.

Clerk of the Course Eamon McGee said
“I took the decision that we should not continue, having listened to feedback from the crews after they had a sighting run over the two stages and after consulting with my senior officials and the MI Stewards and Safety Officer.”

“I wish to pay tribute to the MI officers for helping us make every effort to run the stages, and their input was greatly appreciated.”

“I particularly want to thank all the marshals, timekeepers, radio and rescue crews, officials and stage commanders who battled through blizzard conditions to help us with the event, including those who gritted over 30kms of stage by hand the night before the rally. Many more were unable to travel due to the severe weather.”

“I felt we had a responsibility to run a safe rally first and foremost. Apart from the stages, the road to Letterkenny General Hospital was also being badly affected by heavy snowfalls during the day.”

“While it is a great pity the event could not be run as planned, we feel we took the correct decision on the day and I want to thank the competitors for their patience and help throughout. We had great stages and a fantastic entry but the conditions were just not right for us.”

The Club will be in contact with MI on Monday about the insurance and other costs of the rally and will make a decision about entry refunds and contact competitors as soon as possible after that.”

Eamon said that,
“it was really been busy for us here, and we have had many more entries that expected for this type of event in the county, and in the period before Christmas, when things are usually quiet in motorsport towards the end of the year.”

He continues,
“We want to announce the results service, for those who want to watch the progress of the event on Saturday. If you point your computers and phones towards this website, www.rallyscore.net, then you will be able to follow the progress throughout the day, across the 4 stages.”

Early on Saturday morning, there will be a Driver’s briefing at 9.15am, in Rally HQ, with first car away at 11.00am. The format of the event, will be 2 rally stages used twice, making for a total of 4 stages, It is expected that the first of the cars will return to Glenties after 3pm, before the winter sun sets on a long autumn Saturday afternoon.

The Prizegiving for the event will be in The Limelight and Eamon Magee and his team hope to see everyone there for a celebration of the Saturday night.

The Donegal Motor Club, Irelands largest Motor Club, steps up once again in the name of Motorsport, with its first Mini Stages Rally event, just weeks after their very successful Harvest Stages Rally. They have proved once again they deserve the recognition of serving the interests of motorsport for the enthusiasts, with a new event on the Irish motorsport calendar. This has been rewarded by receiving a top entry for an event that was granted to serve just the members of the Donegal Motor Club.

Credit must go to Eamon Magee, and his enthusiastic team of organisers, when they set out to take the event to Glenties in the Ireland’s most Northly county. With a local sponsor to back the event, The Limelight became the focus for all concerned, and the town is set for a memorable weekend on Saturday 27th November.

The DMC have an entry just short of 100 competitors, when similar events in the country have had to be cancelled due to a lack of supporters. This indicator as to the size of the Club and the wide appeal for such an event to take place, and credit must go to MotorSport Ireland for granting approval to the Club on the busy calendar.

With entries having poured in, Clerk of the Course, Eamon Magee said, “I was confident that the Club could sustain a strong entry, but I was surprised by the final numbers. I want to pay tribute to the members for sending in their entries in the current climate, and holding faith in the organisers. We only hope that the event is good for everyone, and I would like to thank ‘The Limelight’ and the people of Genties and surrounding district for hosting the event.”

The entry list for the event was published before the week-end, and again there are some well known competitors on the list, testament to the membership of the Club and to the fact that so many of the names compete in rallies all over Ireland and are well known, a tradition that has been carried on in the county for almost 40 years.

Spectators are encourages to come out for what is set to be an excellent day with no disappointments. This will be a great event to watch with the first stage set to kick off at 11.15am at The Glen of Glenties

Maps are available to buy from all local shops for a small fee. Hope everyone gets out for yet again for another safe and exciting motorsport event.

The Prizegiving for the event will be in The Limelight and Eamon Magee and his team hope to see everyone there for a celebration of the Saturday night.
