Round 1 - 2009 Rallycross Open Championship

'SCOOP' CARTER'S LATEST CROFT VENTURE...

Posted: March 16, 2009 1:45 PM

Motorsport Editor, Broadcaster and Journalist Larry 'Scoop' Carter heads to Croft Circuit next weekend to take part in his latest motorsport venture with the Fuchs Lubricants Rallycross Open Championship on Sunday 22nd March.

Having used the MSR Motorsport-prepared www.cartersport.com Peugeot 206 at the North Yorkshire venue for rallying and circuit racing over the past twelve months, the Northallerton driver will take to the ultra-fast rallycross circuit for the first time as he enters the popular rally car class which forms part of the opening round of the series.

With the freshly rebuilt engine and a few more horsepower at his disposal, Carter is hoping for a good result having sacrificed his usual commentary duties at the circuit in order to compete and in doing so, increases his tally of different disciplines on both two wheels and four at his local track.

"I've tested a 600cc Honda round Croft, done numerous rallies and even entered a saloon car race last year so by doing a rallycross meeting, I'm continuing the trend of racing anything I can round there! I even took part in a charity cycle race as a youngster so I reckon I should know my way round by now. I'm handing over the microphone to my old mate David 'Woody' Addison this weekend so no doubt I'll be getting plenty of stick on air but I'm not expecting anything spectacular with regards to a result as there are some seriously good drivers in my class."

Once again this season, Carter will be combining his occasional jaunt in the car with duties as Pit Lane reporter in the British Superbike Championship, which kicks off at Brands Hatch over Easter, with his role of editor of 'The World's Number One' Motorcycle Racer Magazine in between running his successful communications company which looks after some high-profile clients in the world of motorsport.

Sunday's action gets underway at 9.30am and will see a full programme of races for all classes of rallycross and buggies. Admission is just 10 with accompanied children aged 15 and under admitted free and with track activities reduced this season because of a recent legal ruling, local fans are encouraged to come along and support the region's only major motorsport facility.

Eugene Donnelly to race at Croft

PSM Motorsport have today announced that Northern Irish Rally legend Eugene Donnelly from County Londonderry, will contest the opening round of the 2009 Fuchs Lubricants Rallycross Open Championship at Croft Circuit (Darlington) on Sunday March 22nd. Donnelly will drive one of the PSM Motorsport Procar 2000 Renault Megane’s at the event, as he makes his debut in the Rallycross Open Championship.

Eugene Donnelly commented:
"I am keen to compete in Rallycross and the Open Championship presents an ideal opportunity to dovetail my rallying commitments with a championship which produces great exposure for drivers and I was delighted to agree a deal with PSM to drive one of their cars."

Donnelly will also drive a RX150 at the Croft event, after recently confirming that he will race in round three of the Championship at Nutts Corner on Sunday April 26th.

"We are delighted to have such a high profile driver approach us to race one of our cars as the Procar 2000 class looks like it is going to provide some great racing throughout the year. A whole host of drivers have already made enquiries about driving in selected rounds with us. The category grew in numbers at almost every event last year and 2009 looks set to continue the trend, even overcoming the “credit crunch”. A number of drivers are citing hire drive opportunities as the perfect way to continue their motorsport involvement without the expense of building a new car.” added team manager Craig Swales.
