It’s October and the 5th and final round of the Darby O’Gills Killarney Autocross Championship is set to take place on the 19th in association with KWD Recycling. Racing is set to get underway at 12 noon with practice on at 11am. It is returning to Mike Cronin’s Pit, just off the Cork road and will be signposted on approach roads to Killarney. The Autocross is also a round of the Munster Autocross Championship which expects a good entry from all round Munster and beyond to put it up to our locals. The track is expected to be quite different to other rounds due work being done in the quarry in recent times.

This is the final round of the championship and although some classes have already been decided, there are many battles yet to be played out especially when dropped points are to be taken into account.

In Class 1 Ger Lynch in a Toyota Starlet has 1st in class secured, but there is still a major battle for second place between Denis O’Brien in a Vauxhall Nova and Sean Hickey in a Honda Civic, both of whom are level on 24pts.

Class 2 has the tightest finish and sees Conor Collins in his Mk2 Escort lead on 26 pts, with Emma Looney in a Toyota Corolla in second place on 21 pts followed by both Jack Newman and Jimmy Devane who are level on 20 pts however if results goes his way Shane Devane could still nip in among the places.

Coleman Hurley in Class 3 in his 2 litre Opel Astra has maximum points on all but 1 day this year brings him to 38pts so far and can’t be caught by Jimmy Devane who changed classes halfway through the year.

Class 4 has only one registered entrant this year with Jerry Lehane in his Subaru Impreza and Honda Civic taking all the points unopposed, giving him the easiest of class wins.

In Class 5 James Lucey leads in his Mazda ‘Special’ and also can’t be caught by Austin Shinnors who is second place in the class.

James Lucey also has won the Overall category with maximum points on every round this year, but there is still competition to win the Overall Saloon category. Here Jimmy Devane currently leads on 62 pts but hot on his tail are Jerry Lehane on 58 pts and Ger Lynch on 52pts.

In the junior category, Emma Looney in a Toyota Corolla is winning, with Thomas Creedon in a Ford Ka in second place and Sean Fleming in a Vauxhall Nova is in third. Emma Looney is also leading the Ladies class on 34 pts from Statia O’Sullivan who is very close to her on 30pts.
