DUNLOP CHAMPION ELLIOTT IN CLARE (Preview courtesy of Irish Dunlop – sponsors of the Irish National Rally Championship)
Posted: September 13, 2008 6:03 AM
THE penultimate round of the Dunlop National Rally Championship, the
Lynch Hotels Clare Rally takes place on Sunday next with newly crowned
champion, Patrick Elliott (Subaru WRC) amongst the capacity entry.
Meath’s, Tim McNulty and co-driver, Eugene O’Donnell head the entry in
their Subaru S12B, they won the event last season when they finished
22 seconds ahead of Aaron MacHale/Killian Duffy.
On that occasion, Duffy clinched the Noel Smith Award as the top
national co-driver. It is something of a similar situation on Sunday
as Patrick Elliott, who clinched the Dunlop series on the last round
in Galway, is contesting the eight stage Clare event so as to ensure
his co-driver, Paul Goodman, can win the co-drivers title. Goodman
missed the last round due to family commitments, the pair finished
third in Clare last season.
On his inaugural title success, Elliott remarked, "It took a day or
two to sink in, I'm delighted. I was genuinely upset when Niall
(Maguire) crashed. It is much better to have a good battle, there
were a few occasions after Niall's accident when I had a few moments.
In that type of situation, you are listening for noises and it is
quite easy to lose concentration. I was lucky to get away with it on
two particular occasions."
Although seeded at three, former triple champion, Niall Maguire is a
doubtful starter, the Monaghan ace was bitterly disappointed after
crashing out in Galway.
Meanwhile, Maynooth’s, Kevin Barrett (Subaru WRC) can secure a top
three position in the Dunlop series on Sunday’s ninth round.
The top local challenge will be provided by Ruane’s, Anthony
O’Halloran in his Mitsubishi, with a stage traversing his locality, he
will be eager to secure a strong finish.
Having taken an impressive haul of 18 Dunlop Championship points in
Galway, Alan Ring (Mitsubishi) is now very firmly in control of the
Patterson’s RallyNews Group N battle where he is 12 points ahead of
his closest rival, Sean Flanagan (Subaru). Ring secured the title a
few seasons ago and another major share of points will set him on the
road for a second title.
Early season pacesetter, Eamonn Daly in a Mitsubishi is seeded at
seven, the Limerick driver was a first stage retirement in Galway.
Inaugural Patterson’s champion, Willie Fannin (Subaru) makes a return
to the series after a lapse of a few events. The top ten also
includes two of the top exponents in the Modified category.
Monaghan’s, Maurice Moffett (Toyota Starlet) can clinch the Class 14
title ahead of his rival, Trevor Mulligan (Escort), Moffett is
currently 15 points ahead of Mulligan, who was a first stage casualty
in Galway.
Outside the top ten, the entry features the Mk. 2 Ford Escorts of
Brian Brogan, local hero, Mike Moloney, Mike Quinn and another local
driver, Alan O’Callaghan (Subaru).
Other entries are Joe McHugh (Escort Cosworth), Ian Barrett (Subaru),
Thomas Fitzmaurice and Danny McBride in Mitsubishi’s along with fellow
Group N aces, Sean Flanagan (Subaru), Trevor Bustard (Mitsubishi) and
Gavin Harris (Subaru). Elsewhere, there are places for the Mk. 2
Escorts of Fintan Canty, Ed Synan, Frank Sweeney and Manus Kelly.
Former rallying great, Russell Brookes will campaign a Sunbeam Lotus
as one of the course cars, he will be co-driven by local Mitsubishi
dealer, Darren Hayes.

Preview Russell Brookes to run as 001 Rally Programmes
Posted: September 8, 2008 3:43 PM
Lynch Hotels have once again stepped in as the main sponsor for this weekend’s Clare Stages Rally. The management and staff of the West County Inn Hotel along with the club’s organising committee have worked together over the years to make the rally one of the most popular and friendly rounds of both the Dunlop national and the Top Part Rally Championships.
Clerk of the course for the event is Jim Casey from Ennis and together with his organising team have set out four challenging stages which will be repeated twice, two in the Killadysart Ballinacally area in the morning and two in the Ruan Kilnamona area in the afternoon.
The four stage system makes things easier for residents as the roads are not closed all day.The club has will start 161 cars and 17 juniors.
Included in the large entry is a total of 42 clare crews who will be fighting for the various class places.
The Scrutiny, Parc Ferme and Service Area will all be based at the Clare Marts Complex on the Quin Road on both Saturday evening and all day Sunday during the rally.
The event kicks off with all drivers and navigators arriving on Saturday morning where they sign on at rally HQ, The West County Inn Hotel on the Limerick Road. They get their roadbooks and pacenotes and are allowed to drive over the stages at normal road speed where they make or check their pacenotes.
All rally cars have to be presented for scrutiny where a team of scrutineers from Motorsport Ireland will check out all the safety aspects of each car, bodywork, brakes, engine, suspension etc. They also do a complete check on all the safety features, seats, roll cages driver/navigator helmets and race suits.
This all takes place at The Clare marts Complex on the Quin Road on Saturday afternoon between 4.00 and 9.00pm.and would be a very good place for people to see the top rally cars in the country and also meet with the drivers.
Also a new incentive for this year will be a Ceremonial Start which will take place at the West County Hotel at around 7.00pm.The top drivers along with all the local drivers will drive their rally cars through the start ramp in front of the West County Inn Hotel before making their way to Parc Ferme at the Clare Marts. This will give people an opportunity to meet with the drivers and navigators and also see the wonderful display of rally cars.
The public will also be able to meet the famous Russell Brookes who will be competing as 001 course car.
63 year old English rally driver Russell Brookes has been invited over by the Clare Club and he will assist in the running of the event by driving as 001 course car which is the last car to travel through the stages before the first competing car. Russell will drive his original sunbeam lotus which he used in 1980 and 1981. The car (KKV 394V) was originally built for Russell to use in the 1981 Lombard RAC Rally. It is now owned by Sunbeam Lotus Owners Club member John Leahy and has been fully restored in its original “Andrews heat for hire” livery. The visit to Clare will rekindle some memories for Russell of when he competed on the Circuit of Ireland Rally during the seventies and early eighties, especially when the early morning breakfast halt on Saturday morning was also the West County Hotel as the drivers travelled to Killarney. Russell will be navigated by local Mitsubishi man Darren Hayes from Ennis.
Brookes won the 1977 & 1985 British Rally Championships driving a Ford Escort RS1800 and an Opel Manta 400 respectively. He was also Welsh Rally Champion in 1973 and Irish Tarmac Rally Champion in 1989.
Brookes started his career driving privately entered cars including a BMC Mini Cooper. Progress was slow until 1973 without the support of family money in a sport which at the time, did not permit sponsorship of individual cars. He then came to the attention of the Ford Motor Company when contesting their Ford Escort Mexico One Make Championship. In 1976 he joined the Ford Works Team and drove an Escort RS1800. At that time the British Championship was highly competitive having eclipised the World Rally Championship for publicity. Brookes found himself in formidable company not least from within the team, Bjorn Waldergard, Hannu Mikkola and Ari Vatenan (all world champions), being his team mates. He won the Open Championship in 1977 and then stayed with Ford until the end of the 1979 World Rally Championship Season.
Two years in the Talbot team followed before he joined Vauxhall/Opel dealer team, first in the Chevette HSR and then in the mighty Group B Opel Manta 400. The Two years with the Opel Manta put Brookes head to head with his team mate Jimmy McRae (father of the late Colin McRae). McRae won in 1984 and Brookes won in 1985. The intensity of the contest lives in the memory of enthusiasts to this day. After a year in the uncompetitive Vauxhall Astra and a one off event in a works Lancia Delta Integrale Brookes rejoined Ford in 1988 for an assault on the British Rally Championship, championing first a Sierra Cosworth. Laterly he drove a Ford Sierra Cosworth 4x4 giving Ford their first international win with the new four wheel drive car. Here he stayed until the end of 1992 when he more or less retired from competitive rallying. To this day though, he still makes sporadic appearances in various cars on historic rallies and at motorsport events.
In 1974 Brookes started one of the longest running sponsorship deals in motorsport when he signed with “Andrews – Heat For Hire”, a portable heating and air conditioning company. Their distinctive yellow color scheme graced nearly all of his cars through to 1992.During this period the sponsors turnover grew from £1.5m to over £60m making it a benchmark for other sponsorship deals.
All the Rally Cars will remain in parc ferme in the Mart complex overnight and the first car will be flaged away from the start ramp at the mart on Sunday morning at 8.30am.and will head for the first two stages in the Kildysart area via the Kilrush Road.
The Service area will be at the Mart complex all day and the cars will return there at 10.56am. and 13.19. The cars will then head for the Kilnamona, Ruan area for the two afternoon stages and will return for service at 15.30.
The cars will repeat the two stages before returning to the finish ramp at the West County Hotel at 18.00
The Clare Stages Rally is Round 9 of the” Dunlop National Championship”, which is decided over ten rounds and clare welcomes the newly crowned 08 dunlop national champion Patrick Elliott who clinched his first ever national title driving his Subaru Impreza WRC S12B on the previous round the Galway Summer Rally a few weeks ago. Here in Clare his co-driver Paul Goodman can take a major step and possibly secure the Noel Smith Award for the top co-driver.
Patrick won the Clare Stages Rally back in 2006 with Rory Kennedy also driving a Subaru. Patrick and Paul are seeded at no.2
Topping this years entry list is last years Clare Stages winners Tim McNulty and Eugene O’Donnell (Subaru Impreza WRC S12B). By the end of last years eight stage event, they finished 22 seconds ahead of newly crowned 07 Dunlop Champion, Aaron MacHale (Ford Focus WRC) and his co driver, Killian Duffy who clinched the Noel Smith Award as the top co driver in the ten round series. The Subaru of Patrick Elliott/Paul Goodman was third, eleven seconds further behind.
At no.3 is Niall Maguire/Paul McLoughlin (Subaru Impreza) who had been fighting with Elliott for the 08 National Crown. A season long battle with Elliott finally ended when Maguire crashed out on the fifth stage of the last round in Galway.
The Rally is also Round 5 of “The Top Part West Coast Rally Championship”, which consists of rallies run in Birr, Kerry, Limerick, Galway and Clare.
Killarney’s Alan Ring (mitsubishi Evo 9) has taken the lead in the 2008 Top Part West Coast Rally Championship after Round 4 the Galway Summer Rally. The defending Champion leads by 8 pts on a total of 58pts after 4 rounds and is in a very strong position to take his 3rd Top Part title in 4 years,
Ed Synan from Limerick moves into second in his Mk2 Escort on 50pts. and has a 7 point lead over Niall Maguire who holds third.
Taking a look down through the Classes, Clare motor club members
Keith Flanagan/Melinda Heaney are the leaders in class 1, Anthony O’Halloran is third in Class 4. Kilmurry’s Alan O’Callaghan leads Class 8, Keith Tierney & Aoife Keogh hold third in Class 11 while Pa Malone and Edward Synan hold their second place positions in Classes 12 and 13.
Clare navigators Charlie McEnery and Kevin Synott are 2nd and 3rd in Class 4 and Declan O’Regan holds 2nd in Class 12
The Clare Rally also includes a junior section and this has attracted an extra seventeen entries.
The Club have received a huge local entry with a total of Forty two Clare Motor Club Crews taking part.
Topping the list is Ruan’s Anthony O’Halloran with Ennis man Charlie McEnery calling the notes in their Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 9. Anthony and Charlie finished the top two wheel drive car and best clare club crew on last years rally in their Opel Manta but for the 2008 season they have made the change over to more modern machinery with the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 9. The car has been built from scratch at Anthony’s workshop in Ruan. It started as a standard road car which was stripped out to a bare shell. The custom roll cage was fabricated inhouse in Ruan and from there it was built nut and bolt back into a group N rallycar. The suspensions, diffs, gearbox, brakes and engine management system were upgraded to the correct spec in order to have a competitive car. This has taken endless man hours by his dedicated service team and many friends to get the car ready. The team had a good start to the year with 7th overall in Birr but they ran into a patch of bad luck after that with a puncture in Kerry, the turbo went in Monaghan and they have spent the last number of rallies trying to get the power sorted and they are looking forward to a good run this weekend. They are seeded at number 5. Anthony will be very determined to be on the pace in group N and will also be hoping to finish the top clare driver in order to claim the most sought after award in the club for the best clare crew on the day, “The Noel McCullagh Award”which is presented in memory of an outstanding club member who was killed in an industrial accident back in 1990. Mike Moloney and Marie Casey will also be fighting for that top clare driver in their mazda rotary engined escort. Mike crashed out on the very first stage on last years rally.
Kilmurry’s Alan O’Callaghan will also be trying for a top place in this years rally, having already finished 16th overall in Birrr, 20th in Kerry and 31st in Munster so far this season.
Other Clare competitors like Christy Carey, Edward Cogan, Richard Casey, Pa Malone, Alan Kelly, Martin O’Halloran, Joe Baker, John Leirnihan, Tommy Flanagan, Michael Rodgers, Martin Kelly, Robert Ryan, Al and Pat Meaney, Tom Ryan and Michael Fitzgibbon and also the return of Ruan’s Pat Casey will all be fighting for honours in their various classes.
The Clare Stages Rally 2008 Committee has spent many hours of hard work and dedication over the past number of months to ensure that the rally passes off safely and smoothly. Heading up the whole operation is Jim Casey, Clerk of the Course, from Ennis. Assisting him are: Bobby Clinton, Deputy Clerk of the Course; Dermot Kelleher, Assistant Clerk of the Course; Jane Cogan, Secretary of the Event,Stage Commanders; John Flanagan, Pat Kileen, David Greeley, Donie Lucey, Assistant Stage Commanders;Tony Griffin, John Walsh, Nikki Fernandes, Martin Leahy, Chief Marshal; Gerry O’Brien, Club Steward John McNamara and Service Area Co-Ordinators; Matt & Pat Gleeson.
