Coulter On Top On Mayo Autocross
Ronnie Coulter in his Vauxhall Astra beat all challengers to claim fastest time of the day on Mayo & District Motorsport Club’s Loose Surface Autocross which was held in Harrington’s Quarry near Swinford. The Tyrone man dominated proceedings with fastest time on each of the three runs over the popular 2 mile course.

With dry and sunny weather, dust was never far away, however, the organising club did an excellent job in keeping the track dampened down for the 70 competitors throughout the day. Ronnie Coulter was immediately quick on the initial run with a time of 2:38.90, while the 2000 Border Rally Champion James McGreal from Foxford was his closest challenger in his Nissan Sunny 1.3 seconds back, with Longford’s John Kelly next up in a Peugeot 205.

The second run saw most of the top runners improve their times, but once again, Coulter was to be the pacesetter, his time of 2:35.07 over a second faster than John Kelly, with Sligo’s John McGettrick another couple of seconds back. However it was very close behind with any one of the top ten drivers close enough to the leader to have a realistic chance of victory on the final run.

With Ronnie scheduled to be the last starter for the final assault on the course, his time from the second run was the target for the rest of the field as the event reached its climax. Derek Deane and John McGettrick set identical times of 2:36.12 before John Kelly further closed the gap on the leader with a time of 2:35.45. Others to improve their times were Walter Burke and James McGreal, but despite the best efforts of the opposition, Coulter’s time from run two remained the benchmark. And it was left to the Tyrone man to emphasise his authority on the event, storming around the course on his final run to record a blistering time of 2:33.96.

Class Results
Colin Currid topped class 1, the Vauxhall Nova driver nearly 3 seconds faster than Mervyn Galbraith driving another Nova, while Tommy Donlon in his Citroen AXGT was third.

Derek Deane took class 2 from his brother Mervyn in their shared 1600 Escort, while Trevor Farrell in another Escort was third.

The very popular class 3 was won by Michael Shaw in a Vauxhall Corsa, while local competitors Brian Conway and Andrew Staunton were second and third respectively sharing a Toyota Corolla.

The powerful rear wheel drive class 4 saw John Kelly taking the honours with second overall fastest time of the day, with Escort drivers John McGettrick and Walter Burke making up the podium positions.

James McGreal took class 5 from the Subaru Impreza of James Donnelly, while the Ladies award was won by Dianne Barry in a Honda Civic.
