2023 Event not going ahead

"The three clubs, Cheltenham Motor Club, Cirencester Car Club and EMCOS have been in negotiations to continue the use of the old Airfield at Down Ampney for special stages rallies, as their current five year contract expires at the end of 2022.

Unfortunately at this time the Land Agent working on behalf of the Land Owners is unable to negotiate use of the venue in 2023 due to imminent planning permission being granted for gravel extraction.

Whilst planning permission is expected to be granted in the first quarter of 2023, a start date has not been given for the extraction of gravel to begin so the door has been left open for further negotiation, but not for 2023. In time the work will result in the whole airfield disappearing with the exception of just several sections of runways which will be left as historic landmarks.

Down Ampney has a long history of rallying dating back to the Cirencester Car Club Arkell Rally in 1973, which is believed to have been the first event to use the airfield. Many a fine battle has taken place on events over the years and the Cotswold Motor Sport Group has crowned many Kings and Queens of Down Ampney in the championship honours.

The three clubs will continue to work together and are now jointly working on many ideas to keep rallying alive in the Cotswolds and, although unlikely for 2023, the years beyond are looking more favourable."
