Breen and Nagle enter Killarney in ex-Meagher Ford Sierra
Posted: November 20, 2022 12:38 PM
Craig Breen has coaxed Paul Nagle out of retirement for next month’s Rentokil Initial Killarney Historic Rally.
The Aghadoe man made the announcement at the rally’s official launch at the Gleneagle Hotel in Killarney on Sunday, 13th of November.
Nagle announced his retirement from the World Rally Championship in October.
He was in Japan this week to complete the handover to Breen’s new co-driver James Fulton and returned to Ireland on Sunday just in time for the launch.
The 2022 event winners will drive the Ford Sierra Cosworth that Frank Meagher drove to victory on the 1992 Circuit of Ireland Rally.
The late Tipperary driver was Breen’s childhood rally here and he recently completed a full restoration of the Sierra. The Killarney will be the car’s first appearance since the restoration.
“We are looking forward to going out for a big battle with some local drivers, “said Nagle.
Killarney and District Motor Club confirmed at the launch that it had received 230 entries for the 150 available spaces.
Sunday’s launch was attended by several dignitaries including TD Danny Healy Rae and Niall Kelleher who is the mayor of the Killarney Municipal District and president of the Chamber of Tourism and Commerce.
“This event is a great advertisement for Killarney, the exposure it gives and the much-needed business at a quieter time of the year – to this visiting our town please do enjoy yourselves,” said Mr Kelleher.
Healy-Rae echoed those words
He said: “This is a great event for the town of Killarney, coming at the dead end of the year, and it gives great exposure for the County of Kerry.”
Club chairman Dan Keane welcomed the politicians’ support for the rally.
“It is hugely important that elected officials recognise the importance of motorsport in Ireland,” he said.
Garda Gary Carroll of the Kerry Roads Policing Division was there to impress a road safety message to the large group of rally fans who attended the event.
“Keep the race in the place,” he said. “This is a wonderful event and adds to the town of Killarney and County Kerry.”
Clerk of course Anthony O’Connor outlined details of the route and some innovations for this year’s rally.
“Our plans are at an advanced stage to create a motorsport festival on the streets of Killarney town, the two-day festival event will begin with a ceremonial start in the town centre on Friday evening at 7 pm on December 2,” he said. “
“Saturday morning starts with the iconic Molls Gap, followed by the mountainous Bealaghbeama Pass and the fast-flowing Kilgobnet stage, then into service at Liebherr Container Cranes. This loop of Moll's Gap, Bealaghbeama Pass and Kilgobnet is repeated and into service again, before heading out to take on the challenge of Moll's Gap for the third time.”
Rentokil Initial Killarney Historic Rally officially Launched
Posted: November 20, 2022 12:33 PM
Killarney and District Motor Club unveiled further details of its December 2 and 3 Rentokil Initial Killarney Historic Rally at the Gleneagle Hotel, on Sunday afternoon, 13th of November.
In his address to the large audience, clerk of the course Anthony O’Connor outlined some of the new initiatives for this year’s event.
“A huge effort is going on behind the scenes to organise, what I believe, is the best one-day rally Ireland has to offer,” he said.
“Entries will close in just a few days and, as ever, the rally has received a large number of entries with some of the highest quality machines and drivers already signed up to take on this challenging event.
“In a Killarney Historic Rally first, the iconic Molls Gap stage will be run on three occasions across the day, which has received nothing but positivity since that was announced. A large number of spectators are expected to congregate on the iconic left-hand turn on the main Killarney to Kenmare road. The rally will consist of seven stages in total, with two runs through the scenic Ballaghbeama stage and the technical and twisty sections of Kilgobnet, which is enough to test the best drivers in the world.”
The rally has attracted a star-studded entry list including entries from all corners of Ireland, Britain and the USA.
LEADING LOCAL ENTRIES
Alan Ring leads the very strong Kerry entry in his Subaru Legacy RS. He and co-driver Adrian Deasy finished second overall last year.
Fergus O’Meara will have British Championship runner-up Mikie Glavin in the hot seat in his Ford Escort.
Todd Falvey is also competing in a Ford Escort and all three local drivers are in contention for the historic award in the Kingdom of Kerry Rally Championship.
INTERNATIONAL ENTRIES
Atlanta-based Donegal man Seamus Burke makes a welcome return to Killarney driving a Ford Escort.
Californian Joe Whyte is a regular visitor to Kerry rallies in his Mini Cooper.
Welshman Sebastien Ling won the historic section of the recent Kerry Winter Rally, and he will be making his Killarney debut in the same Ford Escort.
Leading Welsh driver is long-time visitor Gareth Lloyd who returns in the same BMW M3 E30 that drove to a top ten finish last year
Other Welsh drivers include brothers Adrian and Wayne Evans in their Ford Escorts. ,
Harry Hunt became the youngest British driver, at 27, to take part in the Dakar Rally in 2016. He is making his Killarney debut at the wheel of a Ford Escort Mk2.
Warwickshire’s Les Allfrey has been supporting Killarney and District Motor Club events since the 1980s and makes a welcome return in his Mini.
INTERESTING ENTRIES
Donagh Kelly and Rory Kennedy were fourth overall in Killarney last year and they return in the same BMW M3 E30.
Monaghan’s Michael Carbin makes his first foray into historic rallying. He finished fifth in the recent Banna Beach Resort Kerry Winter Rally in a Mitsubishi Lancer, but he will drive a Ford Escort RS1800 in Killarney in just under three weeks.
Racing driver Michael Cullen will compete in a BMW M3 E30. His co-driver Sean Hasset is better known for the behind-the-scenes social media work he does for Craig Breen on the World Rally Championship.
Breen’s father Ray returns with a similar Legacy to Alan Ring’s version.
Michael McDaid and his Cork co-driver Declan Casey spent the summer scoring top results in the Welsh and BTRDA gravel championship events in the UK.
MODIFIED RALLY
Although predominantly a historic rally, the modified section is always keenly fought and popular with spectators.
Among the leading entries, so far, in this competition is Kevin Eves from Donegal who finished second in this category last season and returns in the same Toyota Corolla.
Jack Newman led the Kerry Winter Rally for a spell but retired after an altercation with a chicane. With his car fully repaired he will be hoping for better luck on his second visit to Kerry in recent weeks.
Leading locals in this category include Connor and Mark Murphy in an Escort and a Starlet. Ray O’Neill, Denis Hickey, Sean Enright (Ford Escorts) and PJ O’Dowd (Talbot Sunbeam) are all potential class winners.
Rentokil Initial Killarney Historic Rally to be Launched this Sunday - 13 Nov
Posted: November 7, 2022 4:59 AM
Excitement is continuing in Killarney ahead of next month’s Rentokil Initial Killarney Historic Rally, which will take place on Saturday, December 3rd. Ireland's only dedicated rally for Historic cars will once again take centre stage as crews wind down their campaigns for 2022.
The rally will be officially launched this coming Sunday, November 13th at the Rally Headquarters, The Gleneagle Hotel with proceedings beginning at 4 O Clock. The rally is once again the opening round of the 2023 Irish Tarmac Rally Championship which is sure to whet the appetite of those wishing to take home top honours at the end of next year. The rally is also the final round of the Moriarty’s Centra sponsored Kingdom of Kerry Championship and with many winners yet to be decided, a close battle among Kerry based crews is guaranteed.
The launch is open to the public and is a great chance for the people of Killarney and Kerry to meet some drivers as well as seeing some of the country’s top Historic machines up close. Ahead of the launch, 2022 rally organiser, Clerk of the Course Anthony O Connor said, “I am extending the invitation to everybody to come along for what is a fantastic day of chat and excitement as the 2022 edition of this great event is officially launched”. Anthony added “A huge effort is going on behind the scenes to organise, what I believe, is the best one-day rally Ireland has to offer”.
Entries will close in just 9 days’ time on November 16th and the rally has, as ever, received a large number of entries with some of the highest quality machines and drivers already signed up to take on this challenging event. In a Killarney Historic Rally first, the iconic Molls Gap stage will be run on 3 occasions across the day, which has received nothing but positivity from rally fans across social media this week, with a large number of spectators expected to congregate on the iconic left hand turn on the main Killarney to Kenmare road. The rally will consist of 7 stages in total, with 2 runs through the scenic Ballaghbeama stage and the technical and twisty sections of Kilgobnet, enough to test the best drivers in the world.
4 Weeks To Go Until Rallying Returns To Killarney Town
Posted: November 7, 2022 4:58 AM
Following a break since the May Bank Holiday Weekend, rallying is returning to Killarney on December 2nd and 3rd as the Rentokil Initial Killarney Historic Rally takes centre stage in Kerry’s tourism hotspot to kick off the festive atmosphere on the first weekend of December.
The Killarney Historic Rally is once again backed by Mr Motorsport in Kerry Michael O Mahony, who is the Managing Director of Rentokil Initial, Ireland’s Pest Experts. The rally will kick off as ever on Friday night where a ceremonial start will see participating crews will take to the town centre to officially get the rally underway under the Christmas lights of Killarney.
The rally proper takes place on Saturday with crews taking to the traditional stages of Molls Gap and Ballaghbeama with 2 runs over the Kilgobnet stage which is sure to be a challenge to both man and machine. The rally will finish with the crews passing over the finish ramp at the Rally Headquarters in the Gleneagle Hotel before a gala dinner and prize-giving which is the perfect end of season reward for the competitors.
Taking charge of this year’s Rentokil Initial Killarney Historic Rally is Anthony O Connor. Having previously been the Clerk of the Course for the International Rally of the Lakes, Anthony is using his knowledge of the Killarney terrain to give the competitors the utmost rally test. “Plans are at an advanced stage now and it is all systems go for the 2022 event. It is a really tough route and anyone who takes home silverware on Saturday will be deserving of their victory” he said. Anthony added “The rally is always used to kick off the festive season in the town and I hope, as ever, the historic rally will give tourism in the town a well-deserved boost ahead of a busy Christmas period”.
Entries are coming in thick and fast for the event and there is sure to be a full house of cars to take to the rally start on December 3rd. Multiple International competitors have already placed an entry for this year's rally. Killarney is always a great attraction for overseas crews and the rally organisers are looking forward to welcoming many back on their return as well as welcoming multiple crews to Killarney for their first trip to the south-west of Ireland.
So, strap yourselves in for one of Ireland’s most anticipated rally’s of 2022.
