TRITON SHOWERS BACKED SERIES NEARS COMPLETION ON GALWAY SUMMER RALLY
Posted: August 24, 2022 10:25 AM
As summer comes to an end, the Triton Showers backed Motorsport Ireland National Rally Championship moves to its penultimate stage with the Bluebird Care Galway Summer Rally on Sunday next. Hosts, Galway Motor Club have attracted a capacity entry of 150 crews with a further fifty on a reserve list for the nine-stage Athenry based event.
Although the Monaghan/Limerick combination of Josh Moffett/Keith Moriarty have already secured the title with six straight victories, second and third overall positions remain undecided along with many of the class awards.
The quest for event victory is a very open contest with several of the top ten drivers capable of victory. Dubliner Robert Barrable (Ford Fiesta Rally2) was one of Moffett’s main challengers in the opening half of the season, he still has the opportunity to cement second overall in the eight-round series. Currently, he shares second spot with Armagh’s Darren Gass, who isn’t competing in Galway.
But it will not be easy for Barrable, who has former national champion Warrenpoint’s Peadar Hurson (Ford Fiesta WRC) as his main opposition. Hurson, a national champion in 1992, is also a former winner of the Galway Summer Rally and always performs well in the west of Ireland.
Former Irish Tarmac rally champion Dubliner Gareth MacHale, who returned to the sport on round five of the series in Limerick, continues to gain seat time in his right hand drive VW Polo GTi R5. Fresh from a fine fourth overall on the recent Cork ‘20’ International Rally, Dunmanway’s David Guest has the ex-Callum Devine Ford Fiesta Rally2 at his disposal and will be hoping to make an impression. So too will Donegal’s Joe McGonigle (Ford Fiesta Rally2), who contested two rounds of the series earlier in the year.
Former national champion Meath’s Tim McNulty will debut the ex-Aaron MacHale VW Polo GTi R5 having competed in a Ford Fiesta R5 on the earlier rounds of the championship. “It will be a learning curve, I always wanted to get a VW Polo and this opportunity came along so I got it.”
The top ten also features Louth’s Brendan Cumiskey (VW Polo GTi R5), Antrim’s Derek McGarrity and Waterford’s Andrew Purcell, both in Skoda Fabia R5’s and former national champion Niall Maguire (Ford Fiesta R5). Indeed, Purcell could be one to watch having got seat time on the recent Cork ‘20’ Rally. Omagh’s Seamus Leonard (Ford Fiesta Rally2) is seeded just outside the top ten and cannot be discounted for a top five finish.
Meanwhile, Maynooth’s Paul Barrett will debut the ex-Cathan McCourt Citroen C3 and will use the event as valuable seat time to get accustomed to the French machine. Currently sixth overall in the series, he is only four points off a possible fourth place and a strong finish in Galway will keep him in touch with his rivals.
Armagh’s Jason Black (Toyota Starlet), who will be co-driven by Galwegian Karl Egan are on course to win the rally.ie award for the top two-wheel drive crew within the Triton series. They are well clear of the opposition and with the best seven from eight events to count, they could secure the award in Athenry.
In the Mk2 Trophy series, Limerick’s Ed O’Callaghan leads his rivals Longford’s Stephen Faughnan and Clare’s Padraig Egan by fourteen and twenty-five points respectively and could take a major step towards the title. The presence of Cavan’s Gary Kiernan, who is also registered for the series, will provide more than just an interesting barometer in terms of pace. Others like Tyrone’s Adrian Hetherington and Monaghan’s Dessie Keenan, both in Escorts, should be amongst the pacesters in the two-wheel drive category along with the aforementioned Black and Donegal’s Johnny Jordan, Monaghan’s Sam Moffett and Richard Moffett, all in Toyota Starlets.
Local drivers include No. 36: Andrew Burke (Skoda Fabia R5); No. 41 Dylan O’Donoghue (Mitsubishi EvoIX); No. 46 Frank Rafferty (Mitsubishi EvoIX); No. 47 Tommy Cahill (Mitsubishi EvoVII); No. 48 Pat Kelly (Ford Fiesta) and No. 52 Sean Walsh (Ford Fiesta) while local lady Aoife Raftery (Ford Fiesta) and her co-driver Geraldine McBride are one of the few ladies crew on the entry list and are seeded at number seventy-eight.
The service park is at the Athenry Mart complex and the loop of three stages, repeated three times are at Tiaquin, Greenhills and Knockroe, the opening stage gets underway at 9.51am on Sunday. The event finishes at the mart complex at 5.00pm.
Quality & Quantity in Bluebird Care Galway Summer Rally Entry List Released
Posted: August 22, 2022 3:26 AM
The Bluebird Care Galway Summer Rally Entry List has just been released and it contains a stunning line up of machinery ready to tackle nine special stages to the east of Athenry on Sunday next. Robert Barrable & Paddy Robinson lead the way in a Ford Fiesta R5 and will be one of the favourites to win the event in the absence of newly crowned national champion Josh Moffett. Number two seed Peadar Hurson who was national champion as far back as 1992 has won this event three times in the past will be hoping for another top result and he has Damien Connolly on the notes. Gareth MacHale has made a long-awaited return to rallying this year and is third seed in a VW Polo and will fancy his chances of a good result.
Two Fiestas are at numbers four and five in the hands of David Guest & Joe McGonigle with 2007 & 2011 winner Tim McNulty next up looking to give a debut to a newly acquired VW Polo R5. Brendan Cumiskey, Derek McGarrity, Andrew Purcell, and Niall Maguire round off the top ten seeds. The Group 4 Fabrications King of the Mk2 challenge looks like it will be hotly contested this year. Gary Kiernan, Ed O’Callaghan, Padraig Egan, Adrian Hetherington & Dessie Keenan are just some of the top Escort drivers entered. Its not all about the Escorts though, as Jason Black, Johnny Jordan, Sam Moffett, Richard Moffett, and John Warren are all in competitive Toyotas, be they Starlet or Corolla. There is a healthy entry right down through the clubmen classes and expect each of this classes to be hard fought.
The full entry of 150 crews is backed up by over fifty reserves who will be hoping to get a call up in the coming week. The Rally is based in Athenry Mart for the weekend with three stages at Tiaquin, Greenhills & Knockroe to be attempted three times. The action gets underway just after 9:30am Sunday with the first car due back at the finish ramp shortly after 5pm. With the rally being a counting round of the Triton National Rally Championship, The Top Part West Coast Championship and the Border Championship expect some superb action on the Bluebird Care Galway Summer Rally.

Galway Summer Rally returns for 2022
Posted: June 5, 2022 8:32 AM
The Galway Summer Rally returns for the first time in three years on the 28th of August and Galway Motor Club are delighted to welcome Bluebird Care as title sponsors for the event. The rally has been in existence since 1972 and it was initially a mixed stage / navigation event before becoming a tarmac stages rally in 1974 and being part of the National Rally Championship for many of those years.
The rally is once again a round of the Triton National Rally Championship in 2022 and Mark Parsons returns as Clerk of the Course. The Rally will be based in the Athenry area with stages close to the town. More information relating to the event will be forthcoming in the weeks ahead as background work is currently underway. The Bluebird Care Galway Summer Rally is also a counting round of the Sligo Pallets Border and Top Part West Coast Championships for 2022.
Managing director of Bluebird Care Sean Lyons says “as a regular competitor on the Galway Summer Rally over the years and a resident of County Galway all my life it’s an honour to be this year’s title sponsor particularly as this is my favourite rally which I have competed in many times over the years. The team at Bluebird Care wish Mark this year’s Clerk of the Course and his very experienced team the best of luck in running what I believe will be another very successful event.”
Galway Motor Club are also delighted to welcome Domestic Violence Response Galway as partners for the rally. Domestic Violence Response responds to the needs of women and children from Galway City and County who are subjected to violence and abuse in the home.
Founded in 1998, Domestic Violence Response (DVR) provides a range of supports to women who experience domestic violence and their children. The support services include one to one counselling support and information sessions, telephone support, group work, programmes to meet the parenting needs of women, educational and support programmes for women and local communities, arts-based projects and programmes directly with young people.
