Posted: September 24, 2021 2:04 AM
Visitors to Donegal Town on Sunday 24th October will be able to see almost half a century of rally history lined up in the Port Car Park for the start of Déjà vu Donagh Day, the nostalgic parade of rally cars and rally drivers.
At No. 1 will be Paddy Hopkirk in a Mini Cooper S, a car similar to the one in which he won the 1964 Monte Carlo Rally. He will be accompanied by Donegal’s multi-experienced co-driver, Rory Kennedy. Following them will be Jimmy McRae, the seven-time Circuit of Ireland Rally winner, in the Subaru WRC S9, which was driven by his World Rally Champion son Colin, in 1991. He will be co-driven by Trevor Agnew, a former world rally champion.
Next up it's Austin MacHale, the five-times Irish Rally Champion, followed by another Tarmac Champion, John Coyne, who returns from the USA to team up with his former co-driver Christie Farrell. They will drive a 1972 Talbot Sunbeam Lotus. Then we have three Donegal legends; Cathal Curley, the man who won the first three Donegal International rallies, who will drive a 1979 Ford Escort Mk.II with his son Connor by his side. Vincent Bonner, the first Donegal man to win the Donegal International, who will drive the winning 1987 Opel Mantra 400 and Donagh Kelly in a 1989 BMW M3, who was the Irish Tarmac and National Rally Champion in 2015 and is also the owner and founder of The Stables Motorsport Centre.
Watch out for Gary Jennings, in his 2006 Subaru WRC S12B, who was the 2013 Tarmac Champion and Dennis Biggerstaff, in a 2003 Subaru WRC S9, a multiple rally and rallycross champion, who will be with his son Stuart. There will be many other well known faces amongst the eighty strong entries and in addition an amazing array of exciting classic rally cars which include the following; 10 Mini Cooper ‘S’s, 7 Ford Escort Mk Is, 14 Ford Escort Mk IIs, 6 Subaru's, 6 Opel's, 4 Talbot's, 4 Vauxhall's, 3 Porsche's, 2 BMW's, 2 Toyota's, and such rarities as a Lancia Fulvia, a Nissan 240RS, and a Renault 8 Gordini.
The cars will leave the Port Car Park at 12.00 noon and travel around Lough Eske then via the Bluestack Mountains to The Stables Motorsports Centre in The Frosses. Please not that only entrants will be able to gain access to the museum.
Please give generously at the collection points as all proceeds will go to The Bluestack Special Needs Foundation.
DÉJÀ VU Motorsport would like to thank Donagh Kelly and the Stables Motorsport Centre staff; The Donegal County Council; The Abbey Hotel; DMG Motors; Ivan and Cynthia Furey, and Robert Little for all their assistance.
