Southern 4 Pre Fastnet Rally

Guest & McGrath Claim 2019 Southern 4 Crown
As we reach the final stop of an exciting calendar for most of our crews, the revs are beginning to flare once more as we look forward to the conclusion of what has been an incredible season, complete with scorching sunshine, dry tarmac, quick stage times and all manner of excitement that will tell the story of the 2019 PlasticBags.ie Southern 4 Rally Championship. With the main field battle coming to an end this weekend on the Fastnet, Clonakilty’s David Guest and navigator Jonathon McGrath have already wrapped up the title, a massive point haul over the two days of the Cork 20 being enough to see the Skoda Fabia S2000 scream its way to glory, but plenty of other battles are still to be decided.
Encompassing some the finest Tarmac Rally events that Ireland has to offer, interest has been understandably massive in the 2019 Championship. Right through the field, entries have risen on previous years, with not only a welcome return for some Southern 4 Regulars, but some incredibly exciting wildcards who were aiming to take the crown won by UK Crew Martyn & Dawn England in 2018.
The Clonakilty Park Hotel West Cork Rally got things underway in March, and once we savoured the incredible scenery of the Cartell.ie Rally of The Lakes, the championship headed to a pair of single round events, the Ravens Rock & Oliver Kierce Motors Imokilly Stages. September saw our third ‘double round’ weekend at the CB Tool Hire Cork ‘20’ before a final duel for our Mainfield & Junior crews here at the Westlodge Hotel Fastnet Rally. For the Historics, they got one last chance for glory at the Killarney Historic Stages (Nov 30th).
While last year’s opening rounds in West Cork gave us freezing temperatures and snow blizzards, the scenes this year that greeted our crews over the opening loops were nothing short of a tropical monsoon. Rain, mud and tarmac most definitely do not belong together, and it became a case of just needing to survive rather than chase times. Many didn’t survive though, as the retirement list began to grow to include a massive nine S4 crews unable to finish Round 1, some rather more spectacularly than others.
As others struggled, the added grip and stability of a 4WD car definitely made a sizeable mark on the leader board. Over eight tricky stages, each almost completely different in their difficulty due to the ever changing conditions, it would be the heady mix of right machinery and bundles of local knowledge that would see David Guest romp home to Round 1 victory, and with it a maximum 20 points chalked up on the standings. The Skoda Fabia S2000, singing along the West Cork coastline, had plenty to spare over S4 newcomer and runner-up William Mavitty in his Mitsubishi Evo, while a more experienced Southern 4 competitor took third, with Kevin O’Donoghue collecting 17 points.
An incredibly experienced competitor with a career stretching right back to the Peugeot Cup days in the UK, William Mavitty is one of a host of new names taking on the Southern 4 Championship in 2019. In his Mitsubishi Lancer, the Fermanagh man is certainly hoping to put the challenge up to defending Group N champion Brian O’Keeffe this year, but the pair may yet have to watch their back as exciting young gun Michael Boyle has also stepped into the ring, although a string of bad luck has really hampered the Donegal man’s chances.
While there has been a massive swell of excitement in the 2019 PlasticBags.ie Southern 4 Rally Championship, nowhere has it been more keenly felt than in the Junior Ranks. The support of Junior Drivers is a very serious guiding principle that the Southern 4 holds as a core value to its success. With that in mind, the decision has been made for 2019 to amalgamate the Junior Championship and Junior Trophy into one singular championship. Catering exclusively to Class 16 cars, this has put the emphasis on the nurturing of young talent, without the need for a massive budget to be competitive. With the support of two loyal sponsors in Paul Browne Plant Hire & Civil Engineering and P&J Engineering, a sizeable prize fund is on offer to the 2019 Champion, including vouchers to the value of Junior Entry to all six 2020 Southern 4 events, a €400 Tyre voucher and a set-up session with Healy Motorsport.
With a near €5,000 carrot dangled, its no wonder that one of the largest numbers of Junior crews ever have registered for the 2019 Championship. With a string of maximum scores on the board, Kerry’s Kieran Reen leads the way, his Civic often going well beyond the limit and putting up times that should be making a lot of people stand up and take notice! Keeping him honest in the Championship though is last year’s Junior Trophy winner Chris Brady, who lies just nine points off the lead once more this year. Brian Keohane took the maximum points on the Ravens Rock to propel him to third while Anthony O’Driscoll sits just a small way back in fourth but drop scores could well bring these guys back into contention.
While the Driver Championship is always hotly contested, the Navigators battle is one that has gone to the wire over the past few years. With champion Dawn England’s West Cork rally ending early on Saturday and having missed Killarney, others seized their chance to get strong points on the board. Jonathan McGrath left West Cork in the knowledge that he could have done no more, a haul of forty points on the board confirming that, and a string of consistent strong finishes sees him sitting atop the leader board, seventeen points ahead of Colin Fitzgerald in second and Andy Hayes in third.
With a longer championship than most, the Southern 4 Historic Championship also kicked off with a double header in Clonakilty before taking on the classic Killarney lanes as well as the duo of Single Day events in Dungarvan and Midleton. Like many sections of the Championship this year, the names at the top are once again a selection of new faces as well as returning competitors. The 2018 Historic battle was one of the closest all season, and this year is no different. Our leading trio are separated by only three points, with John O’Reilly leading Ray Cunningham and Declan Jackson.
After the biblical deluge on Saturday, the S4 Round 2 on Sunday was very much classic West Cork fare. Dry roads, beaming sunshine and a strong sea breeze make the coastal roads come alive, and a few of our drivers left on a mission to regain ground in the Championship standings. Chief among them was Vince McSweeney, unperturbed by a frustrating Day 1 and looking to show the speed that is most definitely there when things go right. A big push from the Evo was spectacular to watch from the ditches, but the nimbler Fabia S2000 of David Guest had the legs and took the spoils of a second victory by 29 seconds. BRC registered driver Sacha Kakad took third in his Ford Fiesta R5.
Heading onto Killarney, the Saturday loop of stages over Cods Head, Ardgroom & Healy Pass would once again prove a happy hunting ground for a Championship favourite, with Vince McSweeney taking the Round 3 victory for a second successive year. The Mitsubishi Evo of the Bandon Ace is at times troublesome, but when on song it is an incredible spectacle as it roars around the tight and twisty lanes of the Beara Peninsula. Behind Vince, and once more scoring strongly, was the Skoda of David Guest, making the most of the warm sticky tar to wring the last from the howling Fabia. Welshman Sacha Kakad took third place in his Ford Fiesta R5.
Come Sunday, the nature of a championship race bore fruit with many of our leading crews hitting trouble and dropping scores, while the more consistent crews continued to rack up impressive point hauls. The huge variety of crews who have registered for the 2019 PlasticBags backed championship was evident with a first time Round winner in the shape of Cal McCarthy in his new Citroen DS3 R5. Plagued with issues in West Cork, the Carberry man will be hoping to push the speed on this season, so watch out! Once again scoring strongly, with a second place, was Sacha Kakad, while the big Group N Evo of William Mavitty came home in third.
Across the groups, a new departure for the 2019 season that has seen a number of similar classes amalgamated to provide even more competition, the following lead the way; The Novice Group 2 is lead by Emma Nott & Declan Casey. In Group 3 (Classes 1, 9 and 10), Michael Kelleher leads Victor Beamish by a single point while in Group 4 (Classes 2, 11F and 11R) it is Donal Dineen who holds a strong 10-point lead over Jason Ryan. Sacha Kakad holds the lead in Group 5 (Classes 3, 12 and 22), while Brian O’Keeffe has romped ahead in Group 6 (Classes 4, 6, and 13). With the largest entry of all, Group 7 (Classes 5, 7, 14, 15 and 20) is sure to be an enthralling battle all year, although with soo many of these crews in the hunt of Overall Championship titles, Kevin O’Donoghue leads Vince McSweeney by only two points.
The recent Ravens Rock rally, held a tight and humid Sunday in Dungarvan, saw the return to form for David Guest, with the Clonakilty man bringing his Fabia S2000 home to yet another maximum score, seeing him jump right back into the Championship contention for the season, but Mark Dolphin and Sacha Kakad kept the pressure on with second and third place hauls respectively. Barely a fortnight later, the action switched to the tight and slippy lanes of the Imokilly Mini-Stages, and in changeable conditions, Vince McSweeny brought his Evo home to take maximum championship points, and again keep himself right in the hunt as we near the conclusion.
The Cork 20 would prove decisive for the 2019 Championship race. With McSweeney, O’Donoghue and Dolphin all sitting the event out, only Sacha Kakad had the chance to keep the title out of the hands of David Guest. On Saturday, Kakad would do enough to claim an advantage points on a trick, wet and slippy afternoon, beating the Skoda by a matter of seconds, although both were eclipsed by the sheer speed of Daniel Cronin who took maximum points. The opening test of Sunday would see both the Ballylickey and UK crews retire their Fiesta R5s and hand the 2019 title to Guest and McGrath who drove another strong Round and clocked up yet another maximum score this season. What lies ahead for the other battles, we do not know, but what we can expect is some real fireworks, incredible skill, and the crowning of some incredibly deserving champions over the next few stages.

Plans are well underway for this year’s Westlodge Hotel Fastnet Rally which takes place on the October bank holiday weekend, Sunday 27th October 2019.The Rally will be based around the picturesque town of Bantry once again.
Newly appointed Clerk of the Course, James Kingston said that he was delighted to be given the opportunity to run the rally.
“I would like to thank the Skibbereen and District Car Club for giving me the chance to run our club’s premier event of the year”. He added “I would also like to thank our main sponsor, the Westlodge Hotel and our associate sponsors Bantry Development and Tourism Association, for giving us their generous support again this year”.
“The rally has always received a good welcome and support from the people of Bantry and surrounding areas, I’d like to thank them and we look forward to their continued support this year.”
This year’s rally will be the final round of the Triton Showers National Rally Championship 2019 and the plasticbags.ie Southern Four Rally Championship. It is also a round of the Carbery Plastics Skibbereen & District Car Club Championship,
This year’s route comprises of eight special stages, two repeated three times and one repeated twice over some iconic local terrain giving a total of 120KM of stages, which will no doubt provide competitors with a great challenge.
We look forward to welcoming competitors and spectators to Bantry in October for a great days rallying.
