Devine hopeful of being number 1 on the 20!

Callum Devine can secure the runner up spot in the 2019 Irish Tarmac Championship this weekend on the Cork 20 International Rally where the Derry man will start with number 1 on the door of his Fyth/Curran Gate backed Ford Fiesta R5. Devine and co-driver Brian Hoy have shown winning pace all season but with newly crowned champion Craig Breen electing to miss the season finale due to World Rally Championship commitments, it gives the pair a great opportunity to take a maiden international win.

As well as potentially securing second in the championship, Callum is also in a very strong position in the FIA Celtic Trophy and with Cork being the final round, he could take that crown on the Muster Car Club run event. While the event is full of possibilities, Devine as ever, is remaining thoughtful ahead of the event.
“It’ll be brilliant to start with number 1 on the door, but that brings its own challenges and pressures” said Devine earlier this week. “We have a genuine chance of a first international win, but all the guys behind me on the entry list will be thinking the same thing. Whoever wins this weekend it will be their first international win.” Indeed the Cork 20 has a habit of producing new winners, with 10 drivers having taken their maiden international win on the event in the past. On his FIA Celtic Trophy chances, Devine is hopeful of building on that success should it come.
“If we win the Celtic Trophy we’re looking at going to the finale in Switzerland next month, it would be a great way to round out the year and broaden our horizons but we need the result in Cork first, that’s the priority.”

This year’s Cork 20 International Rally starts late on Saturday morning with the fearsome Killnamatra test opening proceedings followed by Lough Allua. After service, this loop is repeated followed by another service halt in Macroom, with one final run over Killnamatra to finish the day before the crews return to Rally HQ in Little Island having tackled just over 90 competitive kilometres. Sunday sees a further 118km of competitive driving with Mullaghanish on the agenda twice while Mushera and the Butter Road stages will be visited 3 times giving a total of 13 stages in the event.

Callum has also been keeping sharp since his last outing on the Ulster Rally by lending a hand at a recent Motorsport Ireland Rally Academy development day where he gave fellow drivers some tuition on driving an R5 car. Speaking about the day Callum said;
“The Billy Coleman Award was very good to me so it was great to be able to give something back and support the Academy which is in its first year. It was nice to drive, and be driven in, the Hyundai i20 R5 and compare it to my Fiesta as well. Who knows, I might even try one on an event someday! But for now I’m fully focused on Cork, I want to end the season on a high.”

Duggan mounts Cork 20 assault with Donnelly Motorsport Iriz R5

Former British Rally Championship Junior ace Rob Duggan Rallying will contest this weekends iconic Cork '20 behind the wheel of a Proton Cars Iriz R5 from the Donnelly Motorsport stable.

The 2016 JBRC champion has more recently been associated with his potent Ford Escort MK2 in Ireland, but will head to the event in the R5 machine - his first R5 outing since Donegal last year.

"A phone call between myself and Eugene Donnelly quickly escalated into me sending off an entry for the Cork '20" says Duggan.

"It will be very good to get out in an R5 again, we had a very good result last time out (4th o/a - 3rd ITRC) in one so we are looking forward to seeing what we can do this time around".

He is eager to get a run in the same car the Donnelly has used in this season.

"From what i have seen it seems a very good piece of kit" he continues.

"Until I drive it and get a stage time in her it will be hard to tell, but it looks promising. I'm managing my expectations and hoping to just to get mileage in the car and see what we can do. If we can get it to suit my driving style, who knows what could happen".

Hone to make R5 debut in Cork

Junior British Rally Championship regular, Jordan Hone, is to make his R5 debut at the Cork 20. The 23-year-old will drive a PCRS-run R5 as part of his prize for finishing runner-up in the 2018 Billy Coleman Award.

“We’ve been trying to put the deal in place for a while now,” says Hone. “It’s great to finally be able to announce it.”

Hone hopes to complete a pre-event test in the car and has briefly driven a PCRS-run Hyundai i20 R5 as part of the Motorsport Ireland Rally Drivers Academy. The exact details of what car Hone will drive is yet to be confirmed.

“The JBRC has been our main focus this year. So the Cork 20 was the first opportunity I had to fully focus on the R5 drive.

“The Irish Tarmac Championship has had great R5 entries throughout the year so it’ll be a great chance to compare myself against these guys in similar machinery, although I’m only expecting to learn, develop and improve with every stage.”

Hone’s most recent JBRC round, the Galloway Hills Rally, ended in disappointment after he was forced to retire his car from a class-leading position. Alongside his new co-driver, Keaton Williams, Hone had controlled the JBRC lead from Stage 2 to 5 but a collision with a ditch on the outside of a long right-hander resulted in terminal damage to the radiator and brake system.

The R5 drive remains a one-off for now as Hone hints he still has unfinished JBRC business to settle in his Opel Adam R2.

“I’d like to go back to the BRC with my experience now, but who knows what might happen. If other opportunities represent themselves, I will certainly grasp them with both hands like I hope to do in Cork 20.

“I’m really grateful for those who have supported me throughout the year: Motorsport Ireland, Billy Coleman Award, Premier Car Parts, and my friends and family. Also, I can’t forget about John Coyne and Sean McHugh for all their help and advice in making this opportunity happen.”

McCormack to debut Volkswagen Polo R5 at Cork 20 International Rally

Marty McCormack will give the new Volkswagen Polo R5 its Irish debut as the Tiger Risk Partners-backed ace will contest the CBToolHire.com Cork “20 International Rally (28-29 September) behind the wheel of a Dom Buckley RSC example.

The Draperstown driver has been mixing a British Rally Championship programme in a Skoda with his preparation for November’s Roger Albert Clark Rally in a Ford Escort Mk2 this season. But he will now turn his attentions to the legendary Cork 220 in the latest specification Polo R5 and is bidding for a strong run on the tough Irish lanes.

McCormack is no stranger to the R5 generation of machinery and has vast experience in their handling and characteristics. His R5 debut came at Rallye de Portugal as part of the World Rally Championship back in 2013 with a Ford Fiesta R5. A switch to a Skoda Fabia in 2016 kicked off a long partnership with the Czech brand which continues to this day.

However, McCormack has had his sights set on the latest offering from Volkswagen for some time and its success in Europe has led to talks with the Scottish based firm Dom Buckley RSC, which runs McCormack’s Fabia, to obtain an example.

McCormack and regular co-driver Barney Mitchell will head to the final round of the Irish Tarmac Rally Championship to compete against some of the fastest asphalt drivers in the country, which is held in Macroom, with Rally HQ in Little Island, Cork.

Over 200 miles of flat-out action is on offer, spread across 13 stages during the weekend and McCormack is eager to get behind the wheel of the Polo for the first time.

“Exciting news isn’t it?” beamed McCormack.

“We have really been enjoying driving the Skoda this season and I think it's fair to say that my relaxed approach to the events we have contested has brought our pace up a notch. But I`ve been exploring some other options for some time now and when the opportunity came up to drive the Polo, it didn’t take me long to say yes”.

He will carry out a short test this week ahead of the event to acclimatise to the car and its characteristics, as well as trying to find a set up for the Irish Tar.

“I’ve heard some great reports about the car in Europe but of course that is a far cry from the Irish lanes so it may take some time to find the right set up for the following weekend. But that’s part of the excitement for me and it will be a real challenge to get it right from the word ‘go’.”

McCormack had enjoyed a strong start to his BRC campaign this season, but work commitments had ruled him out of contesting the Pirelli Rally which hampered any charge on the title. Non-finishes in Ypres and Ulster allowed McCormack to concentrate on his Historic Rallying for the remainder of the year but he has always wanted to remain at the forefront of R5 machinery.

“I`m always looking further afield at what is being developed and the Skoda has been a great car. But until you sample other makes and models, you don’t know how manufacturers are progressing. It's great to be associated with the Volkswagen brand on such an iconic event too. It should be a pretty good blast”.

CB Toolhire Cork 20 International Rally 2019 Press Release 1

Changes are a plenty for this year’s CB Toolhire Cork 20 International Rally, which takes place on Sept 28th & 29th next. The rally is the final counting round of the Irish Tarmac Rally Championship, a counting round of the ERT Celtic Rally Trophy, Southern 4 Rally Championship & South East Stages Rally Championship.

The Organisers of the Cork 20 International Rally 2019 are delighted to announce that CB Toolhire have pledged their support to the event again for 2019 by continuing as title sponsor for the 2nd year in a row. Leading class 14 competitor Colin Byrne, owner of CB Toolhire, commented that he was looking forward to be involved again for 2019. The Organisers are also delighted to have the support of AceSigns as associate sponsor for the event. AceSigns, headed up by well known competitor Neil Phelan, has been a long-time supporter of the event. Neil commented that he was looking forward to the changes in this years event.

Clerk of the Course, Paul Browne, has scheduled two days of competitive action with some slight changes from the past two years to try to make it more competitor friendly.

This year, the rally HQ returns to the award winning Radisson Blu Hotel in Little Island, Cork, having last run from there in 2016. The Radisson Blu Hotel has a long established association with the event, having been the base of the rally for many years up to 2016, and with the hotels excellent facilities and location, it provides a fitting base for the event. Both the rally organisers and the management of the Radisson Blu Hotel are delighted to re-kindle their association for the 2019 event. Scrutiny, Trailer Park and Parc Ferme will all be based in close proximity to the hotel, making accessibility for sign on etc. an ease to the competitors.

The stages for the weekend centered around the Macroom area, taking in some of the classics such as Killnamartyra, Lough Allua and Mullaghanish. The rally will retain its two-day format, but will have a later start on Saturday with four classic stages over the course of Saturday afternoon. Sunday will compromise of nine stages, in a 3x3 format. The event will total in excess of 200km of competitive stage kilometers. The route maintains a tight format, and this year will enable the competitor to complete reece in one day.
