Preview - 'International' Line-Up for Jim Clark Rally

Posted: November 5, 2019 10:56 AM

Did you hear the one about the Irishman, the Scotsman, the Englishman and the Welshman? They're all contesting this weekend's Jim Clark Rally in Duns.

The return of the Jim Clark Rally has been welcomed right across the country and despite the end of season date, many of the country's top amateur drivers and their co-drivers are heading to the Scottish Borders. Ahead lies a choice selection of the country's finest stretches of testing and demanding roads which will be closed by Act of Parliament for a few hours to allow the competition to take place.

Where tractors and Royal Mail vans provide the normal backdrop to country life, the roads will be busy with specialised machines of a very different nature. The sound of high performance engines will replace the rhythmic chug of tractors for a few hours before being handed back to their more habitual custodians.

Heading the entry list is top Irish driver Josh Moffett. Winner of 6 rallies in Ireland and Northern Ireland this season so far, this will be his first ever competitive run out on Scottish tarmac. At number two is top Scot, David Bogie. With one British and five Scottish rally titles already under his belt the Dumfries driver is coming across country to Duns "just for the craic". Unlike Moffett who will be at the wheel of the latest generation 4WD Ford Fiesta R5, Bogie will be driving his cherished RWD Ford Escort Mk2.

All the way from Hertfordshire is the number 3 seed Robert Swann. For this weekend, the Englishman will swap his Subaru Impreza World Rally Car for a Ford Fiesta WRC machine which will be able to take the fight to Moffett. Another Scot fills the number 4 slot, former race driver Alan Kirkaldy. Fresh from victory in his Fiesta R5 just a few weeks ago on the Cheviot Stages at Otterburn, Kirkaldy will have his eyes on a bigger prize this weekend.

From Wales comes the number 5 seed Hugh Hunter with his Ford Focus World Rally Car. Hunter hasn't won a rally this season - yet, and will be keen to make amends this weekend. Rounding off the top six is Manchester's Steve Simpson, another Fiesta R5 front runner and in his third change of car this year! Filling the next three places are three more drivers in 4WD machinery, Lincolnshire's Andy Fenwick in a Fiesta R5 and two more Scots both in Mitsubishi Lancers, local farmer Michael Binnie from Cornhill on Tweed and Inverness car dealer Donnie MacDonald. Completing the top ten line-up is another local hope, Garry Pearson, but like Bogie he has opted for a RWD Ford Escort Mk2. Unlike Bogie, this will be Pearson's first ever run out in a Mk2 and he's relishing the challenge. He started rallying in front wheel drive cars and moved on to four wheel drive machines. This will be his first rally where "the wheels are pushing rather than pulling".

That's not to say he won't be competitive. Like Bogie, if conditions are right for the two wheel drive brigade, then the total traction faction will have to keep an eye on their rear vision mirrors.

The outlook for fun and frolics this weekend remains bright and promising, and the organisers will welcome careful and considerate spectators. To that end, four separate spectator areas have been created for fans to gather and cheer on their favourites.

All the information for would-be spectators is available on the event website, link below.

Preparations Well Underway

Posted: August 29, 2019 10:49 AM

Planning for the forthcoming Jim Clark Memorial Rally has stepped up a gear with the announcement of a new Clerk of the Course to further strengthen the experienced organising team.

David Gray from Newry in Northern Ireland will oversee the preparation and running of the rally which is scheduled to take place on Friday 8th and Saturday 9th of November 2019.

David brings with him a huge amount of experience and knowledge in running major events in Northern Ireland where Closed Road Rallying is the norm rather than the exception. A former highly successful competitor in his own right he has switched roles over recent years first through motor club activities and local events and later to National and International competitions.

In 1995 he 'retired' from active competition and commenced duties as a Steward with Motorsport UK, the sport's governing body throughout The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. In 2004 he was appointed Steward and Observer with the FIA, the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile, which is motor sport's world governing body.

In addition to his ongoing duties with Motorsport UK and the FIA he is Chairman of a unique Northern Ireland body called 2&4 which represents both Regulated Car and Motorcycle Clubs at Government Level.

He therefore brings to the Jim Clark Rally organising team not just his huge experience and wide ranging knowledge, but he has a knack for dealing with volunteers and amateur sports people, and an ability to deal with motor sporting governing bodies and politicians at local and national level. He also brings a fresh insight into the sport of Closed Road Rallying which to date has only had two regular events on Scottish soil, here in the Borders and on the isle of Mull.

Commenting on his appointment David Gray said: "I'm looking forward to the challenge and working with a new team."

Rally Chairman Dan Wright added: “It’s a great pleasure to welcome David, our new Clerk of the Course, to the Jim Clark Memorial Rally. We have the same ambitions for the future of the rally and are looking forward to working together to deliver it!”

The Jim Clark Rally on 8th and 9th November represents the culmination of the work and the willingness of many people throughout Berwickshire, from farmers to shopkeepers, hoteliers and business folk as well as MPs and MSPs, Councillors and Police to ensure that this major sporting event returns to the area.

The organising team are currently finalising the Event Regulations and Entry Forms for competitors and more details on the planned route will be announced shortly.

THE JIM CLARK MEMORIAL RALLY, 8/9 November 2019

Posted: April 19, 2019 7:04 AM

The annual Jim Clark Memorial Rally is back under Starter's Orders. Following the final completion of new legislation by the Scottish Government this week, the way is now open to bring the rally back to Berwickshire.

Originally the organisers sought to run this year's event on their previous end-of-May date, but, having checked with the 'Motorsport UK' competition calendar, this clashes with other events around the UK in this very busy season.

However, in a bid to get back on the road, the organisers have opted for an end-of-season date which would cause the least interference to a very busy motor sporting calendar.

Following discussions with Scottish Borders Council and Police Scotland the new dates have been confirmed as the 8th and 9th of November 2019.

Many people have worked tirelessly to ensure that the sport can return to 'closed roads' and following a recent public consultation process, support for this type of event proved overwhelming.

At the forefront of this campaign were the two clubs most affected by these changes in Scotland, Mull Car Club and the Jim Clark Memorial Motor Club. However this could not have been achieved without the unstinting support of the sport's governing body, Motorsport UK, and the Scottish Parliament's supportive and encouraging team in Transport Scotland.

Throughout this process both Scottish Borders Council and Police Scotland have worked with the Jim Clark Rally organising team to ensure that the rally would be ready to run once the legislation process had been completed.

To that end, a number of options with regard to route and timetable have been evolving at Rally HQ and once final plans have been completed, more details will be revealed in due course.

Potential rally competitors, officials, volunteers and fans right across the UK can now mark their diaries with two important dates, 8th and 9th November 2019, and plan their routes to the eastern Scottish Borders.

STATEMENT FROM THE ORGANISERS OF THE JIM CLARK MEMORIAL RALLY

Posted: March 5, 2019 5:33 AM

The organisers of the Jim Clark Memorial Rally have been greatly encouraged by recent developments in the Scottish Parliament to help overcome the barriers to closed public road rallying to Scotland. Such a move will bring the country into line with other parts of the UK including Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man, the Channel Islands, Wales and England.

The recently concluded Public Consultation on the new proposals proved there was an overwhelming desire for such a move which would benefit not only motor sports fans, but also many other sporting interests and pursuits. The Public Consultation process attracted 3,788 replies of which slightly more than 98% were positive.

Business and commercial interests, as well as local authorities, also welcomed these positive steps especially on the Isle of Mull and in the Scottish Borders which led the way in establishing the sport on 'mainland' UK.

To that end, the organisers of the Jim Clark Memorial Rally have been maintaining contact and continued working with Scottish Borders Council and Police Scotland in hopeful anticipation that rallying could return sooner rather than later. Arrangements and plans are already in place to facilitate a quick resumption of the sport on completion of the parliamentary process.

Potential rally competitors, officials, volunteers and fans right across the UK are therefore advised to 'pencil in' two important dates, 24th and 25th May 2019, and plan their routes to the eastern Scottish Borders. With a bit of luck and goodwill, it should soon be possible to allow those interested to confirm the date in ink!
