Leading all through, Monaghan’s Josh Moffett (Ford Fiesta WRC) and his Limerick co-driver Keith Moriarty won the Hotel Kilmore Cavan Rally, round three of the Triton Showers National Rally Championship. They finished 34.6 seconds ahead of the Fiesta WRC of Donegal’s Declan Boyle and his Monaghan co-driver James O’Reilly. Armagh’s Darren Gass (Subaru WRC) and Monaghan’s Enda Sherry were 46.4 seconds further behind in third.

On the opening stage Moffett took a 5.6 second lead over Boyle with White 5.4 seconds further behind in third. Garry Jennings (Subaru) occupied fourth - 11.4 seconds behind the 2016 Triton champion White with Joe McGonigle (Mini WRC) and Peadar Hurson (Fiesta WRC) completing the top six. Stuart Darcy (Darrian T90) seventh in general classification led the two-wheel drive category.

Times for the second stage were cancelled due to issues with synchronising the clocks as Moffett, despite a spin, dominated the third stage and arrived at the Cavan service park with a lead of 8.8 seconds over Boyle, who was quite content with both his pace and position.

White was 10.6 seconds further behind in third, he also spun on S.S. 3 and it cost him a few seconds. Fourth placed Garry Jennings reckoned the stages were very narrow for his Subaru WRC, he was some 13 seconds behind White. Peadar Hurson in fifth was downbeat as he had no readout in the cockpit of his Ford Fiesta WRC to inform him which gear he had selected. Joe McGonigle (Mini WRC) completed the top six. Elsewhere, the top ten also included Darren Gass (Subaru WRC), he was untroubled in the McKinstry Subaru WRC; Stuart Darcy in seventh continued to set the pace in the two-wheel drive, he opined that his Darrian was too low and needed adjusting for the Cavan terrain even though he was a little reluctant to make the change.

Donagh Kelly in his first outing in a Fiesta WRC took time to adjust and remarked that it was a much different to his usual Ford Focus WRC. Kevin Barrett (Subaru WRC) completed the top ten.

Willie Fannin (Subaru) led Group N after early leader Aidan Wray (Mitsubishi) retired with a damaged exhaust. Maynooth’s Paul Barrett (Mitsubishi EvoX) also retired, a blown turbo on the opening stage signalled the end of his rally. Elsewhere, Gary Kiernan (Escort) spun on the opening stage and had steering issues on the third stage while another Cavan driver Chris Armstrong (Escort) retired with a damaged wheel.

Although Boyle narrowed the deficit to 7.8 seconds on S.S. 4, Moffett was quickest on S.S. 5 and White was best on S.S. 6 where Boyle lost time with a front right wheel puncture. Out in front, Moffett led White by 24.1 seconds with Boyle 12.2 seconds further behind. With the best time on S.S. 6 White was confident that he could hold off Boyle on the closing three stages. Jennings in fourth acknowledged the pace of the leading trio and reckoned he needed more seat time to get to that level. Gass continued untroubled in fifth followed by McGonigle, who lost over twenty seconds having been off the road on S.S. 5. Hurson retired his Ford Fiesta with a broken rear differential.

Kelly moved up to seventh as he continued to acclimatise to the Fiesta WRC.
Having raised the set-up of his Darrian, Darcy was pleased with the outcome, but the brake pedal went soft on the sixth stage as he led the Escort of Gary Kiernan by 8.3 seconds, the latter punctured towards the stage end but lost little time. Kevin Barrett (Subaru WRC) was tenth. The Escorts of Ryan Loughran and Damien Toner were just outside the top ten, the former had gearbox issues and the latter, a misfire.

Willie Fannin (Subaru) continue to lead Group N - 17.1 seconds ahead of the Mitsubishi of Cathan McCourt.

A rear left wheel puncture soon after the start of S.S. 7 saw White plummet to eighteenth as he lost over five minutes when he had to stop and change the wheel. Moffett was quickest on the stage and also on the penultimate stage. On the Power Stage, Boyle set the fastest time to claim the bonus point to add to the 18 points for second spot. Moffett took his first win on the season and with it the 20 Triton points. McGonigle, Kelly and Jennings completed the top six.

Darcy withstood the challenge of local hero Gary Kiernan (Escort) to win the two-wheel drive category, Darcy also won the Triton Showers Drive of the Day award. Kiernan and Kevin Barrett (Subaru WRC) completed the top ten, the latter ran out of fuel right at the Cavan finish. White finished twelfth.

Meanwhile, on his debut in a Mitsubishi EvoX and in left hand drive for the first time, Down’s Cathan McCourt and his Cork co-driver Grace O’Brien won the Group N category as Willie Fannin (Subaru) was a final stage retirement.

In the Junior category, Armagh’s Jason Black (Toyota Starlet) took a dominant victory and finished a minute and 53.4 seconds ahead of the Longford’s Stephen Faughan (Escort) with Armagh’s Gareth Black (Toyota Starlet) a minute and 14.7 seconds further behind.

Hotel Kilmore Cavan Stages Rally Press Release 2

Posted: May 10, 2018 3:38 PM

There are three weeks to go to the Hotel Kilmore Cavan Stages Rally and the entries are flowing in for the event in what’s shaping up to be a very competitive rally between some of Ireland top drivers. Declan Boyle in his Ford Fiesta WRC will be coming back to try and repeat his win in 2017.

The popular Donegal man who currently leads the chase for the 2018 Triton Showers National Rally Championship will have stiff opposition once again in the form of fellow Donegal man Donagh Kelly aswell as a host of other big names including White, McGonigle, Moffett and not to mention the 6 times winner of the event Niall Maguire.

The event was launched officially at the Hotel Kilmore with the help of Paul Henry and his team who are back once again as the title sponsors of the event with the hotel being the focal point for the event with parc ferme, service and scrutiny all being within a 3 minute walk.

Commenting at the launch Paul noted the event was one of Cavan’s prestige sporting events during the year
“The Hotel Kilmore are delighted to be associated once again with this great event and we are really looking forward to it.” The Hotel Kilmore’s Country Club also have Michael English performing on the Saturday night for a great night’s entertainment.

The event is delighted to welcome back the Cootehill based Abcon Industrial Products Ltd who through the form of their automotive brand FinishLine would have a strong connection with the sport with a number of competitors turning to the brand since it’s introduction and association with the Rally in 2017. Speaking at the launch Lyn Sharkey expressed delight at coming on board with the event for another year
“We are delighted to be associated with the rally once again with the FinishLine product as we feel it’s a really good match for our customer base and to be associated with such an old and well established event.” Lyn also brought news of a competiton being held in the Rally Programme this year in the form of a coupon which can be cut out and filled in when they purchase FinishLine products from their retailer for a chance to win a supercar driving experience day in Mondello.

Another company making their return for 2018 is Wilton Waste recycling who have been great supporters of the event over the years since their establishment in 2003 with Rodney himself a former two wheel drive winner on the event on occasions. This year with the stages getting close to home there could be a chance that Rodney could possibly make a cameo appearance in some form of Ford. Once again they will be providing the waste disposal solutions in the service park which is just one branch of their business catering for a lot of the Commercial and residential refuse in the county on a daily basis.

2018 will bring a new sponsor to the event in the form of Fire Protection Ireland who have been in business since 2011 formed by regular competitor Sean Sharkey who offer 24 hour 365 services on fire protection systems whether it’s installation, commissioning or servicing. Sean will be hoping to have his Toyota Starlet ready in time for the event to have a go at the 2 wheel drive race which will feature a number of rapid locals with Chris Armstrong and Gary Kiernan renewing their battle on the stages.

With entries still coming in the number of entrants and interesting names will continue to grow with the addition of a new look shakedown stage being welcomed by all competitors as a great initiative.
