Round 4 - 2017 Tarmac Rally Championship

Manus Kelly Makes It Two in a Row After Sensational Joule Donegal International Rally

Posted: November 13, 2018 9:29 AM

The Joule Donegal International Rally ended on a high with Manus Kelly and Donall Barrett retaining their title for the second year running. In a superb contest, the defending champions battled it out all weekend with fellow Donegal man, Donagh Kelly, who was unfortunate to slide off the road in the penultimate stage. Once again, Ireland’s only three-day rally was a massive success, bringing drivers, navigators and spectators on a thrilling weekend of motorsport, set against the spectacular backdrop of the Wild Atlantic Way.

Climbing from his Subaru S12b, Manus Kelly paid tribute to his family, friends, co-driver, organisers, officials and marshals:
“I wouldn’t be here today without the support of my family, friends and sponsors, who all made this happen. My good friend Donall Barrett was faultless on the notes all weekend and the car was a dream to drive. Huge thanks to Eamon McGee and his team who put on the best rally in Ireland and thanks to everyone involved. We’re looking forward to the celebrations!”

Taking time out from his debriefing, Clerk of the Course Eamon McGee thanked everyone who worked tirelessly to ensure the success of this year’s rally:
“The crowds out on the stages were the biggest we have seen in Donegal for many years and everyone was in great form and listened to instructions and obeyed the marshals at all times. We didn’t lose one stage and the rally pretty much ran on time all weekend. The live coverage via our Facebook was absolutely fantastic and we’d great feedback from Irish people all around the world, with tens of thousands of people tuning in to view the weekend action. It was great to be able to share the rally with the diaspora in this way and the Donegal landscape and The Wild Atlantic Way provided the perfect setting for another dramatic finish.”

Meanwhile, the Clonakilty Blackpudding Championship contenders had an intense fight all weekend. Alastair Fisher took top points with Monaghan brothers Sam and Josh Moffett claiming second and third place points.

The modified tussle was an intense event with another Glenswilly man taking the win. Damien Gallagher, partnered by Mac Walsh, claimed the win ahead of Declan Gallagher and John McCarthy. Top point scorer in the championship was Vivian Hamill.

In the Historic category, county Antrim’s Ernie Graham took the overall win as well as maximum Clonakilty Blackpudding points. Stephen Peoples, ably assisted by Kieran Burke, claimed the junior title. Jenna McCann finished third in the junior race, which was enough to extend her push for the Clonakilty Blackpudding Championship junior title. Delighted with the success of this year’s event, organisers are already looking toward next year as plans for the 2018 Joule Donegal International Rally get underway.

Clonakilty Blackpudding Irish Tarmac Championship Round 4 Preview

Posted: June 15, 2017 2:19 PM

There are only a few days to go before one of the most eagerly anticipated events on the Irish rallying calendar, the Joule Donegal International Rally, and as usual the event has attracted an extremely strong entry both in terms of quality and quantity. The rally is the fourth round of the Clonakilty Blackpudding Irish Tarmac Rally Championship and most of the main contenders will be present in what should be a classic battle. Sam Moffett the championship leader is on the crest of a wave now having won the third round of the series in Killarney six weeks ago, and is also leading the national championship having won all rounds to date. He is the man very much on form and has also won the Donegal International in the past. Second placed championship driver Alastair Fisher will be looking to regain momentum after a disappointing result in Killarney. The Fermanagh driver led the championship after the opening two rounds but crashed out of contention in Killarney and will be hoping for better fortune in Donegal.

Third in the championship is Joe McGonigle who will be competing on his home International Rally and he has increased his pace with each passing round as he gets more used to his Skoda Fabia R5. Robert Barrable lies fourth overall in the series which belies how competitive he has been since he returned to rallying at the start of the year after a two-year break. His late retirement in West Cork was followed up by a fine second place in Killarney as he continues to show the potential of the Hyundai i20 R5 car on Irish tarmac. Rounding off the top five overall in the championship to date is Josh Moffett who missed Killarney after badly damaging his car in Monaghan and has only one rally under his belt since. It may take a few stages before Josh is completely on the pace of his rivals, but with three days of tough rallying ahead anything can happen.

With Stephen Wright, Brendan Cumiskey & Tomas Davies missing the event the opportunity is there for other drivers to move further up the leader board. Aaron MacHale in his Citroen has shown flashes of pace but hasn’t found consistency with the car just yet with an accident and puncture spoiling his Galway and West Cork events respectively. Paraic Duffy, Joe Connolly and John Mulholland are other drivers who stand to gain by getting a strong result. Mulholland has moved from a Skoda S2000 to a Skoda R5 for Donegal and the car with its gold livery should be one of the nicest cars on display.

William Mavitty leads the Group N category and will be hoping to take a step closer to taking the title, but Gavin Kelly who scored maximum points in Killarney could be a big threat. Andrew Burke leads ITRC3 at present but will not be in Donegal which opens the door for James Wilson and William Creighton to improve their positions while Marty Gallagher has only appeared on one round to date and has a lot of ground to make up.

The action begins with the Trentagh stage on Friday lunchtime with six stages on the opening day. The second day is the longest day with eight stages and the final day has six more stages including the classic Fanad, Atlantic Drive and Glen test and the first car is due back at the finish ramp at 6pm on Sunday evening.

Donegal Preview – Modified, Historic & Junior Championships

Posted: June 15, 2017 2:13 PM

Modified

The hard fought 2017 Modified Championship sees the crews head to Donegal for the fourth round of the championship with leader Kevin Eves hoping to maintain his position on his home rally. Eves has been very impressive to date with maximum points in West Cork and Killarney, but faces a stiff challenge next weekend. There is a strong field assembled behind the Toyota driver that will give him a stern test with Gary Kiernan, Brian Brogan, Eugene Meegan, Damien Tourish and Frank Kelly just some of those who have the potential to score well. Second placed Eugene Meegan is ten points behind Eves and has had better luck with reliability this year and he is the only driver who could take the lead from Eves if the Donegal driver hits trouble.

John Devlin, Gary Kiernan and Vivian Hamill are almost thirty points behind and need to start scoring well. Kiernan has been particularly unfortunate as he was forced to retire in both West Cork and Killarney. Brogan and Kelly’s only appearances of the season were in West Cork and ended in mechanical failure for both while Damien Tourish was second after Galway but crashed out in Clonakilty and didn’t go to Killarney. Richard Whelan in a similar BMW 1M to Meegan hasn’t been out since Galway and may take some time to get back on the pace. One thing is for sure, it’s going to be a major battle between the top championship drivers in Donegal next weekend.

Historic

In the historic championship, a couple of strong performances in West Cork and Killarney has given Barry Jones a clear lead of almost 14 points after four rounds. Jones is top seed in Donegal and despite a lack of experience on the event it is unlikely to hamper him too much as has proved his pace on every round to date. Keith McIvor failed to finish in West Cork but was Jones closest challenger in Killarney and will be in more familiar territory here. Ernie Graham in third place will be hoping for a better run than in Killarney where he retired his new BMW M3 very early on. Other drivers who can make some serious gains with a good result include Shawn Rayner, Philip McKibbin, David Goose & Andy Johnson who has missed the last two rounds after hitting mechanical trouble in Galway. The Historic Rally begins on Saturday morning with the Garrygort stage and the historic crews will run in fourteen stages overall.

Junior

The junior championship is very competitive this season and is currently being led by Jenna McCann in her Ford Fiesta R2. She holds a three-point advantage over Justin Ryan who was runner up on last year’s series and will be hoping to go one better this year. John McCabe in third place won’t make the start so it gives Eric Calnan and Brian Moore to make up ground as both drivers have only scored on one round to date. The Junior Rally takes place on the final day over the classic tests of Fanad Head, Atlantic Drive and Glen village.

Divers Hyundai supports Barrable as i20 R5 faces its toughest Irish Tarmac test in Donegal

Posted: June 12, 2017 9:08 AM

Letterkenny-based Divers Hyundai will support Robert Barrable as he contests the only three-day event in the 2017 Clonakilty Blackpudding Irish Tarmac Championship, the Joule Donegal International Rally (16-18 June), in his New Generation i20 R5.

Divers Hyundai was founded 30 years ago in Derrybeg, before moving shortly afterwards to Letterkenny. It was initially a Renault franchise, quickly establishing itself as one of the best-known retailers in the country. It changed its focus to Hyundai in 1997 – which at the time was new and little known, but which has since developed into Ireland’s fastest growing car brand.

The Divers Hyundai support will be illustrated in a fantastic new colour scheme on the i20 R5 – in which Rob will make his first four-wheel drive appearance at Donegal in. The 29-year old Dublin driver has only contested Donegal twice before – making his debut there in 2009 in a Ford Fiesta ST and returning the following year in a Citroën C2 R2. That will mean Rob will need a very good recce and perfect pace notes from co-driver Damien Connolly on such unfamiliar roads, whilst some of the stages – including the famous Atlantic Drive test – will be attempted this year for the very first time.

On only his third rally in the Hyundai i20 R5, Rob is up for the new challenge of Donegal and keen to strengthen his position in the Irish Tarmac Championship. At the mid-way point, he is fourth in the points standings, just one point behind Joseph McGonigle (ŠKODA Fabia R5) and 17 points behind leader Sam Moffett (Ford Fiesta) with three rounds remaining.

Robert said: “Being the only three day event in the Irish Tarmac Championship makes Donegal a very big event in more ways than one. You need to have a bit more of a sensible approach to give yourself the best chance of reaching the finish, but like all rallies in Ireland you don’t want to waste too much time at the start feeling your way in, so you also need to be fairly quick out of the box.

“We’ll test the Hyundai before the event to continue to fine-tune the set-up for the Irish roads. After West Cork and Killarney, I feel we’re making good progress with the i20 R5. The more we drive it the better the car is, and we hope that our hard work will pay off over the famous Donegal stages like Knockalla, Fanad Head and Atlantic Drive. The aim in Donegal is to be competitive, and if we can do that throughout the event, then there is every chance of a very good result.

“I’d like to thank the Letterkenny dealership Divers Hyundai for coming on board to support us. It’s extra incentive to put on a good performance to show our appreciation.”

Organised by Donegal Motor Club, the 44th Donegal International Rally is based at the Mount Errigal Hotel in Letterkenny and contains 20 special stages totalling approximately 300 kilometres over bumpy, twisty, lightning fast and narrow Tarmac lanes. The route goes from the fabled Knockalla coast road, to the lush green farmlands of Carnhill and onto the wide open bog land landscape of Glen – making it one of the toughest challenges in the Irish rally calendar.

STAGE IS SET FOR NEXT WEEKEND’S JOULE DONEGAL INTERNATIONAL RALLY

Posted: June 12, 2017 8:58 AM

With just days to go until the 2017 Joule Donegal International Rally, it’s all systems go for organisers, who are busy putting in place final preparations for the event. Next weekend will see a record number of entrants battle it out for the prestigious Donegal crown. A bumper-filled entry will tackle 20 stages over three days of testing roads across the finest parts of The Wild Atlantic Way and beyond.

Ahead of next weekend’s event, Course of the Clerk, Eamon McGee and his team have been around the route ensuring that no stone is left unturned. He says Donegal is ready to put on its best event yet:
“This final week is all about the last-minute preparations. We’ve been liaising with all residents affected by road closures, ensuring they are fully informed. In addition to this, many of the crews participating in next weekend’s event are in Donegal this week to carry out their recces, driving the route at normal road speeds, making pace-notes. This information is vital for next weekend, when co-drivers will read it to drivers on the competitive sections of the rally to inform them of the severity of upcoming corners. We’ve had great reports from the crews, who are full of praise for this year’s route – the stages are in excellent condition and we’re ready for action.”

The Joule Donegal International Rally prides itself on being at the forefront of technology and this year, the event will be streamed online via Donegal Daily and On the Pace Note, all these will be shared on the Donegal International Rally Facebook page and donegalrally.ie. Eamon McGee is delighted that the event can be shared with an international audience in this way:
“As well as attracting a local and national audience, this year’s Rally can be viewed in real time by Donegal and Irish people living all over the world. The diaspora can tune into live action from all the stages and service areas. Viewers can access live studio links with expert analysis, in-depth interviews and behind the scenes footage with crew members out in the field. We’ve no doubt that interviews from the end of each stage will capture the raw emotion of the event, as crews are still fully pumped after completing a stage.”

Anyone interested in viewing the event online can do so on Facebook live via facebook.com/onthepacenote. All links will be available and shared on www.rally.ie and the Donegal International Rally Facebook page. Programmes are also available online and in various shops across the country, while the updated entry list can be viewed on the Joule Donegal International Rally website.

With over 20 international crews entered in the 2017 event, there’s a very strong international element to this year’s rally – another reason why spectators will come out in force for the only three day rally in Ireland. For more information on the Joule Donegal International Rally, visit www.donegalrally.ie or www.donegalmotorclub.com. Press Release 5

The 2017 Joule Donegal International Rally team is proud to reveal this year’s entry list, which is overflowing with quantity and undoubted quality. Every crew that crosses the start ramp will be part of an epic event. Eamon McGee is delighted to announce that the rally has attracted an entry of 180+ for the main field, while the historic and junior field are also running at full capacity. The only downside to this, is that organisers must include a reserve field in the main field as only 150 entries are permitted to start. The official launch of the Joule Donegal International Rally takes place on Friday, 2nd June at the County Council Offices starting at 7.30pm and everyone is welcome on the night. With 11 World Cars in the line-up, the cream of Irish WRC’s will once again do battle with some of the best stages in Ireland. The bar has been set even higher this year, with names like Manus Kelly, Garry Jennings, Declan Boyle and Donagh Kelly to name just a few.

The main Clonakilty Blackpudding Championship is contested by R5 cars and is represented by 5 major manufacturers Ford, Hyundai, Skoda, Peugeot and Citroen. Keith Cronin in Citroen R5 came within 0.5secs of taking the overall win last year and it’s entirely possible that the overall winner may come from the likes of Sam Moffett, Alastair Fisher, Robert Barrable or Josh Moffett. Eleven crews will take to the start, so undoubtedly there are others who will have a say in the outcome.

In the modified field, almost 60 crews have entered in classes 13 and 14 alone, with the best Irish modified drivers wanting to be involved in the action. Names like McPhillips, Pringle, Gallagher, Kiernan or Hethrington don’t even need a first name for the rally fans that will be lining the roads of Donegal over rally weekend. The MKII Escort is still the car of choice by the vast majority of crews but interspersed are Darrians, Toyotas, BMWs, Honda, and Vauxhalls – all driven by crews who will be ensuring they have their say on where the silverware ends up at prizegiving on Sunday evening!

This year, the historic class has 20 entries including Ernie Graham and Ian Davies in BMW M3s, bringing back memories of the battles between Bertie Fisher and Austin McHale. Rally fans will also be keeping an eye out for Welsh visitors Dave Pritchard and Emyr Hall who made their first visit last year and are returning in 2017 with an even larger supporters’ club.

The Juniors have entries from every corner of Ireland; Jenna McCann leads the Clonakilty Blackpudding Junior championship but the young lady from Cavan will have a battle on her hands to take the laurels in Donegal. Drivers such as Eric Calnan, Jonny Treanor and Kevin McLaughlin will be going all-out to claim victory. Once again, the third weekend in June is shaping up to be another Donegal classic in the world of motorsport.

ENTRIES NOW CLOSED FOR THE JOULE DONEGAL INTERNATIONAL RALLY

Posted: May 23, 2017 6:05 AM

Entries have now closed for the Joule Donegal International Rally 2017 and organisers have been overwhelmed by the level of interest from competitors this year. Donegal continues to be a huge draw and strong entries across every class means this year’s event will be overflowing in quality as well as quantity.

Glenswilly man Manus Kelly will be back to defend his title in his hired Subaru S12b. Last year Manus and Donall overcame a trip into a field to claim victory by half a second, after three hard days of competition. In fact, the pair never actually lead the rally until the end of the very last stage. Some of the drivers aiming to take the title from Manus Kelly are Donagh Kelly, Declan Boyle and Garry Jennings. Donagh in a Ford Focus WRC will have Conor Foley on the notes and is desperate to add Donegal to his impressive CV. Declan has his cousin Brian onboard; they’ve had a fraught year to date with niggling problems. However, his team have been working hard to have the Fiesta WRC back in tiptop shape. Garry has Letterkenny business man Rory Kennedy alongside him; Rory has gathered a wealth of experience over almost 30 years and the partnership has already delivered two victories.

The main Clonakilty Blackpudding Tarmac Championship contenders are all coming to the Hills of Donegal to rekindle their battle. Championship leaders Sam Moffett and Karl Atkinson in their Fiesta R5 have a comfortable ten and a half point lead over the similar car driven by Alastair Fisher and partnered by Gordon Noble. Donegal man Joe McGonigle and his co-driver Ciaran Geaney have had a consistent start to the year and hold third in the championship in their R5 Skoda. Fourth in the standing is Robert Barrable and Damien ‘The Dentman’ Connolly in their exciting new Hyundai i20 R5. They will be joined by a wealth of other Championship protagonists coming to fight for points.

In the modified section, the expression ‘Donegal has it all’ could not be more apt with an absolute abundance of talented crews and machinery. With names like Damian Tourish, Gary Kiernan, Jonathan Pringle and Declan Gallagher to name only four; the battle to claim the modified trophy is going to be intense with over 50 crews entered between classes 13 and 14. Two drivers hoping to break the MKII Escort dominance are Joule Director Ian Barrett and Donegal’s own engine building supremo Kevin Gallagher; they have Darrian’s T90 GTR and run in class 14. The top two contenders in the Clonakilty Blackpudding Modified Championship will also be in the thick of the action – Kevin Eves from Pettigo in South Donegal driving a Toyota Corolla leads the points table by ten points from Eugene Meegan in his unusual BMW M1.

Thanking everyone for their support this year, Clerk of the course, Eamon McGee, says Donegal continues to be the rally that every driver craves to add to their tally of rally wins:

“Entries for the 2017 event have come in from across Ireland, the UK, Europe and America. We’ve had some very interesting entries including an American based Irish man John Coyne, who was Tarmac Championship back in 1982. In the last few seasons, he has competed in the historic championship and next month, he’ll be bringing the fearsome Tuthills Porsche 997 R-GT to the northwest. I’ve no doubt this car will sound fantastic reverberating around the hills of Donegal. Also, John Stone has entered with Letterkenny man Danny McMenamin reading the notes in John’s Fiesta S2500. These two guys have sons with Down Syndrome and are using the event to help raise awareness and show anything is possible with the right encouragement”.

Further information regarding other entries and the rally route will be available in the coming weeks.

Last Chance to Get Entries in for Joule Donegal International Rally

Posted: May 9, 2017 3:55 PM

Entries continue to flood in for the 2017 Joule Donegal International Rally in advance of next week’s closing date of Tuesday 16th May. Competitors are reminded to get their entries in this week for the chance to participate in one of the biggest rallying events in Ireland. The Joule Donegal International Rally takes place from Friday 16th to Sunday 18th June and entry forms and regulations are available via www.donegalrally.ie or www.donegalmotorclub.com, links below.

The stage is set for one of the most exciting events in motorsport. The Clonakilty Blackpudding Irish Rally Tarmac Championship has just passed the half-way point, with events in Galway, West Cork and Killarney. The championship hopefuls have been battling hard to try and gain an advantage and Monaghan native Sam Moffett currently leads the main table with an 11.5 lead over fellow Fiesta R5 driver, Alastair Fisher. Muff’s Joe McGonigle is in third place with his Skoda R5 and Robert Barrable is in fourth with his Hyundai i20 R5.

In the modified section, Kevin Eves leads the table in his Toyota. He heads into his home event in Donegal with a 10 point advantage over Eugene Meegan in his BMW, with Escort driver Sean Moynihan in third. In the juniors, Cavan woman, Jenna McCann leads the table in her Fiesta with Justin Ryan in second and John McCabe in third.

The historic competitors have a longer Championship - with an extra event in Killarney and one in the Isle of Man – and will also arrive in Donegal at the midway point of their championship. Welsh competitor, Barry Jones leads the field from the similar Ford Escort of Keith McIvor and in third is Ernie Graham, who started the championship in an Escort but debuted his BMW M3 in Killarney.

Looking forward to welcoming some of the best rally drivers and crews to the northwest next month, Clerk of the course Eamon McGee said:
“Along with championship regulars, the Joule Donegal International Rally always attracts the best rally teams and crews from around the world, all vying to claim the illustrious title, ‘King of Donegal’. The guys participating in the championship will focus on getting as close to the number one position as possible. In the modified section, Donegal is regarded as the Grand Prix of Irish Rallying and this means it attracts the absolute cream of modified crews. For many of the visitors to Donegal in June, these guys are the spectacle that encourages them to flock in their thousands to stand on the ditches and cheer on their favourites.”v
“Entries for this year’s Joule Donegal International Rally close on Tuesday, 16th May, so we’re encouraging people to get their entries in and be part of this exciting event. We promise there’ll be plenty of stories to tell this year, so don’t miss out on your chance to be a part of the magic that makes the Joule Donegal International Rally so memorable year on year!”

Entries Now Open for the 2017 Joule Donegal International Rally

Posted: April 25, 2017 6:09 AM

The 2017 Joule Donegal International Rally takes place from Friday 16th to Sunday 18th June and entry forms and regulations are now available via www.donegalrally.ie. The Joule Donegal International Rally is Ireland’s only three day event and attracts some of the best rally teams and crews from around the world.

The entry fee for the main field three-day rally is Eur 1,375, the entry fee for the historic crews is Eur 840, running Saturday and Sunday, and for the junior crews is Eur 565, who will be running on Sunday, these prices including all insurance levies. Closing date for entries is Wednesday, 17th May.

Clerk of the Course, Eamon McGee is encouraging rally crews to register early for this year’s event:
“The Joule Donegal International Rally remains the only three-day International Rally in Ireland, and crews will have the opportunity to visit some of the most famous stages in the world. Names such as Knockalla, Atlantic Drive, Fanad Head and High Glen will raise the pulse of even the most seasoned competitors. These stages mixed with others will see crews’ complete twenty stages over the weekend. Entry for this year’s Donegal International Rally closes a few days after the Donegal Forestry Rally and I’d like to remind club members that by marshalling at this event it will help gain points that will enhance chances of obtaining an entry to the year’s rally in June.”

Preparations and plans are almost finalised for this year’s event which sees some minor changes to the route.

“The 2017 rally route has evolved from last year. This means crews will once again get the maximum stages mileage yet at the same time; it keeps road mileage to a minimum. Crews will take on six stages on the opening day of the Joule Donegal International Rally in the Letterkenny/Ballybofey area with centralised service area in Letterkenny. On Saturday, crews will tackle some famous stages such as Knockalla and Gartan Lake as part of the eight scheduled stages and the service will be based in Milford. On the final day, crews will battle it out around Glen, Fanad and the Atlantic Drive hoping to secure a place on the leaderboard,” McGee added.

Organisers of the event and the Donegal Motor Club have worked hard to keep costs to a minimum for competitors.

'Donegal is Go' for 2017 Joule Donegal International Rally

Posted: April 10, 2017 10:24 AM

Plans are well underway for this year's Joule Donegal International Rally, which takes place from Friday 16th to Sunday 18th June. The three-day event attracts tens of thousands of visitors to the county and is estimated to be worth €25 million to the local economy.

One of the biggest sporting events in Ireland, the Joule Donegal International Rally brings some of the best rally teams and crews from around the world to the northwest. Last year's event welcomed crews from Ireland, the UK, continental Europe, the USA and New Zealand and Clerk of the Course Eamon McGee believes the 2017 event will continue to be an international draw:

"We're looking forward to hosting the cream of Irish and international talent in Donegal this summer. The 2017 Joule Donegal International Rally is Ireland's only three-day event and a counting round of both the Clonakilty Black Pudding Irish Tarmac Championship and the FIA European Rally Celtic Trophy. We'll be continuing with a tried and trusted routine with scrutiny on Thursday, followed by three days of non-stop action from Friday to Sunday".

"Events like the Joule Donegal International Rally wouldn't happen without the support of the local community, Gardaí and our main sponsor, Joule. This is the third year that Joule have sponsored the event and we thank them for their continued support. Safety is always paramount and I would ask spectators to obey marshals and official instructions to ensure that everyone enjoys the Donegal experience," Eamon added.

Joule is Ireland's leading manufacturer and designer of energy efficient hot water cylinders and solar heating systems. Ian Barrett is the company's Chief Executive and he says the partnership is a good fit:
"Donegal is one of the best rallies in Europe and this event has captivated drivers, navigators and motoring fans, across five decades. The Donegal landscape is a huge part of the event's appeal and is one of the main reasons the county topped National Geographic Traveller's Cool List for 2017. We're delighted to be partnering with an event that gives people the opportunity to experience one of the world's most thrilling sports in the coolest place on the planet."
