Cave gets set to debut New Generation Hyundai i20 R5 in British Rally Championship
Posted: April 25, 2017 5:16 PM
As announced a few weeks ago, Tom Cave and his co-driver James Morgan will debut a Hyundai Motorsport-built New Generation i20 R5 in the Prestone MSA British Rally Championship on this weekend’s Pirelli Rally (29th & 30th April).
They head to the second round of the UK’s top rally series lying second in the championship standings after an impressive performance on round one, the Border Counties Rally. Having led the event at the halfway stage, conditions and the determination to secure a good result saw them end a tough but successful weekend in second place.
Tom (from Aberdovey) will drive the Hyundai for the first time in advance of the Pirelli Rally when he and co-driver James Morgan (from Hirwaun) test the car in Kielder Forest on Thursday (27th). Whilst the i20 R5 is new to them both, competition at rallying’s highest level in the UK is not and therefore their hopes are high for another top result, as Tom explains:
"It’s a brand new car and for us, a brand new team, so this will be a learning curve for everyone. The whole package looks great and I’m pleased to report that everything is coming together well. We have a test day planned for Thursday when I’ll be driving the Hyundai for the first time and I’m really looking forward to it.
"I’m familiar with the Kielder stages, so for James and I the plan is to carry on from where we left off on round one. While we want to make sure we stay in the running for the championship, we also want to do the best job we possibly can for everyone involved with this exciting project.”
The Pirelli Rally starts and finishes in Carlisle. The route features 100 competitive miles in Kielder Forest, split into four stages on Saturday afternoon followed by a further four stages on Sunday morning.
Tom’s British Rally Championship campaign is supported by DMACK Tyres, the Trefeddian Hotel, Walero temperature regulating base layers and Atech Racing.
Cumbrian challenge awaits for BRC stars
Posted: April 25, 2017 7:42 AM
The action-packed Prestone MSA British Rally Championship returns to action next weekend (29-30 April), with the famous Pirelli international Rally playing host to the second round of Britain’s premier rallying series. The legendary Kielder Forests await with over 100 gravel miles for the BRC elite.
The 2017 campaign exploded back onto the scene in Scotland for round one of the BRC. The Brick & Steel Border Counties Rally got proceedings underway in dramatic fashion, with six drivers topping the timesheets throughout the weekend and the lead of the rally changing no fewer than five times during the two-day event.
Big-hitters set to do battle in Cumbria
After a commanding victory on the opening round, Fredrik Ahlin comes to the Pirelli International Rally in fine form in his DMACK-shod Skoda Fabia R5. The Swedish driver won the event last year and will be eager to stretch his standings lead further after his visit to Kielder with new co-driver Torstein Eriksen. Leading the charge to overhaul the Swedish/Norwegian pairing will be Tom Cave and James Morgan in their brand new Hyundai i20 R5. The Welsh pair will debut the Korean machine on British soil and will hope that Eastern promise will prevail, as they look to snatch their first Pirelli win and the championship lead.
Previous winners Osian Pryce/Dale Furniss (Ford Fiesta R5) will be in the podium hunt once again after a fine third place in Jedburgh. The most successful man in recent Pirelli Rally history is Irishman Keith Cronin, who already has two wins chalked against his name. With Mikie Galvin calling the notes, the Fiesta R5 driver will be keen to make it a hat-trick on M-Sport’s home ground. Team-mates Alex Laffey and Dai Roberts will be wanting to put a disappointing round one crash behind them, as they go in search of their first points this year.
Another former Pirelli Rally-winning crew, David Bogie and Kevin Rae were trading times at the top with team-mates Ahlin/Eriksen until a rare off for the Scottish pair put the Fabia R5 crew out of contention. Having scored no points with their ‘Joker’ last time out, the duo will be hungry for a win to put their title tilt back on-track. Fellow CA1 Sport crew, Jamie Anderson and Ross Whittock put their new Fiesta R5 through its paces on the Borders and will be eager to put themselves into the top six once again on their preferred gravel surface.
The biggest surprise in the build-up to the second round of the BRC was the announcement that WRC regular, Eyvind Brynildsen would be joining the fray. The Norwegian, backed by Pirelli brings his Fiesta R5 to the party and will be hoping to put the cat amongst the pigeons with his wildcard entry with co-driver Andreas Fredriksson.
Young gun Rhys Yates showed incredible form in Scotland to round out the top five at the opener. Alongside Carl Williamson, the Michelin-supported Fiesta R5 driver will hope to replicate that result as the cars return to Carlisle this weekend. Matt Edwards/Darren Garrod had a troubled first round but were pleased to take home sixth in their Hankook-shod Fiesta R5. With Edwards’ confidence ever growing, the Welshman will be challenging for a strong result.
Marty McCormack/David Moynihan showed flashes of brilliance on the opening round in the their Kumho-backed Fabia R5. The northern Irishman took a stage win on the Border Counties and will look to convert his raw speed into a points paying position.
Jonny Greer is one of the most experienced on the Pirelli International with the Northern Irishman set to start his eighth event, this time at the wheel of his Citroen DS3 R5 with Kirsty Riddick on the notes. Desi Henry/Liam Moynihan in a Fabia R5 will be aiming to fight inside the top five as they look to put a disappointing first round behind them.
Rejoining the series and kicking off his 2017 season on the Pirelli Rally is Thomas Preston in his striking Fabia R5. The Englishman got quicker with every stage mile in 2016 and will be hoping to burst into the points from the off this weekend, with the experienced Andrew Roughead calling the notes.
James Slaughter makes a welcome return in his striking Fiesta R5. The Kent-based driver has a new co-driver onboard in the form of Niall Burns. Slaughter is gaining experience with every mile and hopes to secure his first outright point on the Pirelli.
Leading from the front – Junior BRC runners eager to shine on round two
With a £30,000 prize fund on offer to the overall champion, the fight for supremacy in the Prestone Motorsport News Junior BRC is hotter than ever in 2017.
The scene-stealing performance on round one went to Oscar Solberg and Patrik Barth in their Ford Fiesta R2T. The Norwegian/Swedish pairing blazed a trail through Jedburgh to put the famous Solberg name at the top of the championship standings going into the Pirelli Rally.
Hot on the Scandinavian’s heals will be Dean Raftery and Tom Woodburn in the first Peugeot 208 R2. The Anglo-Irish partnership recorded second on the Border Counties Rally and will be gunning for the top spot this time around. Although a relative newcomer to gravel, Northern Irishman William Creighton stunned everyone with a fine third in his 208 R2, with Liam Regan expertly guiding.
Peugeot are well-represented in the Junior category this year, with five of the French pocket rockets lining up for the Pirelli Rally. Meirion Evans/Jonathan Jackson scored a strong fourth in Jedburgh and will be aiming for the top three on the fast, flowing stages. Fellow Welsh pairing Cameron Davies/Caron Tomlinson had a nightmare of a first round and will be eager to seal a solid result next time out – as will Irish crew Marty Gallagher/Dean O’Sullivan in the final Peugeot 208 R2.
Celtic two-wheel-drive champions Callum Devine/Keith Moriarty came fifth on their first gravel event in their Fiesta R2T. The Irish pair are gaining momentum and are sure to be fighting at the sharp end once again. Another Fiesta R2T will be in the hands of James Williams/Phil Hall, who will be hoping to score their first points of the season in the competitive front-wheel-drive series.
Josh McErlean/Damien Duffin showed flashes of brilliance in their Citroen C2 R2 before mechanical failure put paid to their opening round. The Irish crew have points on the agenda for the demanding Pirelli Rally.
Cadet Cup runners put through their paces
New for 2017 is the exciting formation of the Cadet Cup, home to the Ford Fiesta National, Opel ADAM Cup and older-generation Ford Fiesta R2.
Signalling his intent on round one was Josh Cornwell, with Richard Bliss in the co-driver’s seat in their Ford Fiesta R2. The pair dominated the first round, getting their season off to a textbook start.
Fergus Barlow and Max Freeman (Fiesta R2) notched up second and will be in the hunt for another podium to add to their collection. James McDiarmid and Max Haines Messenger fly the flag for Harper Adams University in a Ford Fiesta National. The team of enthusiastic students took the final step of the podium in Scotland and will hope to bring their turbocharged machine to the finish once again.
Challenging the top three will be a brace of MH Motorsport-prepared Ford Fiesta R2s for Nabila Tejpar/Charley Sayer-Payne and Alex Waterman/Harry Thomas, while Richard Burns’ godson, Tom Williams will be challenging for a rostrum in his Fiesta R2, with Bryan Hull on the notes.
Arron Windus is set to return to the series on the Pirelli in a brand new Vauxhall ADAM Cup. The Australian will be keen to get his series off to a flyer, by bagging a Cadet Class podium on the second round of the BRC.
The supporting cast out to steal the headlines
Following an outing in the FIA World Rally Championship, David White will hope more seat time in the Ford Fiesta R2 in Corsica will pay dividends in the fight for BRC4 honours.
Donnie Macdonald and Andrew Falconer will once again harness the powerful right-hand-drive Ford Fiesta R5 in the National Rally Cup. The Scottish duo will be hoping to top the NRC points standings and mix it in the top ten overall on the Pirelli International. John Morrison and Peter Carstairs in a Mitsubishi Evo9 will be waiting to pounce if Macdonald slips, while Spencer Wilkinson and Glyn Thomas aim to extend their margin in the BRC Production Cup.
All seven rounds of the BRC will be beamed into homes around Europe with Channel 4, BT Sport and Motorsport TV all showcasing the best of the action with extensive highlights being transmitted after every weekend.

Pirelli date for Mintex MSA BHRC
Posted: April 25, 2017 7:19 AM
The 2017 Mintex MSA British Historic Rally Championship will head into Kielder forest for round three, the Pirelli International Rally (Saturday 29 April) with Nick Elliott and Dave Price bidding for a hat-trick of 2017 victories.
The season started in mid-February on a damp and foggy Red Kite Stages when three crews marked themselves as the early season pace-setters in Ford Escort Mk2s. Elliott and Price emerged victorious that day over reigning champions Jason Pritchard and Phil Clarke while Joe Price and Chris Brooks showed typically strong pace before being sidelined with a failed diff.
The story was similar a month ago on Rally North Wales when Elliott and Price again set the seal on victory with a storming opening salvo through wet and slippery stages. Pritchard struggled to find his rhythm and was running third until Price went out after an off left his car parked on its side. Pritchard moved up to second but was nearly caught on the final stage by the increasingly rapid Escort Mk2 of Rudi Lancaster and Guy Weaver.
The Roger Albert Clark Rally Motor Club promotes the MSA BHRC under a five-year contract and 2017 will be the third year of that agreement. The calendar covers five gravel and three asphalt rallies, with a double-header on the Isle of Man in September to make nine rounds. The team at Special Stage will film all eight events to give the BHRC some of the best TV exposure in British rallying.
Elliott and Price head north with a clear early points’ lead after two perfect scores and Pritchard and Clarke know that they need to stop that becoming a hat-trick this weekend. The fast and flowing Kielder stages, with notorious ditches, should be the setting for another mighty contest. Added to the mix is the very welcome BHRC return of Matthew Robinson and Sam Collis in the fabulous Fiat 131.
Elliott/Price also head Category 3 where more strong Escort Mk2s in Class D5 include those of Simon Webster/Jez Rogers, Steve Bennett/Osian Owen and Tim Freeman/Paul Williams. The other class winners in Category 3 have been Ben Friend/Cliffy Simmons (Ford Escort Mk2) in D3 and David Hopkins/Tony Vart (Sunbeam Talbot) in D2. However, Hopkins will not be in action on this event as he prepares for a trip to the Midnight Sun Rally in Sweden in June. Chasing the flying Friend in class D3 has been the Escort Mk2 Pinto of Rex Ireland/Adrian Scadding.
Stanley Orr and Stephen McAuley have set the early pace in the Capital Construction Category 2 as Orr steps up to BDA power in his Escort Mk1. Rear suspension problems that dogged their progress on the Red Kite finally put them out of the opening event but they came back strongly to win on Rally North Wales. The opposition to Orr is topped by local ace Phil Jobson and his Welsh co-driver Arwel Jenkins in their Escort Mk1 and veteran Bob Bean with Malcolm Smithson alongside is his Escort Mk1. Simon Pickering and Paul Barbet (Ford Escort Mk1) have taken a double win in class C3 for Pinto-powered Escorts.
Class C2, for the 1600cc cars, has become a battle of the Hillman Avengers as Elliot Retallick/Tim Tugwell and Andrew Stokes/Adrian McNally compete: to date Retallick has taken the class on both events while the class could also feature a three-way contest among the Escort Mk1s of Aziz Tejpar/Steve Davey, husband and wife Stuart and Linda Cariss and Welsh crew Mal Bayliss/Siobhan Pugh.
In the Vintage Car Radiator Company Category 1, the Mini Cooper of Phil Harris and Richard Suter has taken two wins from two starts in 2017.
The rally will be based in Carlisle at H&H Auctions. The first car will start at 8am on Saturday and return to the finish at around 12.30pm.
MH Motorsport aim for Junior BRC success at Pirelli Rally
Posted: April 25, 2017 6:22 AM
Petersfield based preparation experts MH Motorsport will be aiming to take their second Prestone MSA Junior British Rally Championship (BRC) win in a row, as they head to the Pirelli International Rally in Carlisle this weekend.
MH Motorsport were delighted to come out on top at the series opener in March, with Norwegian Oscar Solberg taking the win of the hotly contested Prestone MSA Junior BRC series in his Fiesta R2T.
Northern Ireland’s Callum Devine also made his mark on the leader board on the first round, taking a solid fifth spot in his similar model Fiesta.
After a confident boosting opening round on the Border Counties in March, the Hampshire outfit will be once again be powering a brace of Ford Fiesta’s in the championship and will be looking to further build on their successes in the early part of the year.
The MH Motorsport team of Solberg and Devine have already been dubbed as ones to watch for the title, with the winner bagging a substantial £30,000 prize fund in the process.
The Pirelli International Rally takes place in the notorious Kielder forest complex and the two-day event will see crews tackle a 100 mile competitive route in the Scottish Borders.
Leading the Junior rankings after round one, Norwegian pilot Oscar Solberg will head to Carlisle firmly in the driving seat after an impressive performance in the Scottish Borders in March.
With Patrick Barth alongside the son of World Rally Championship ace Henning, Solberg will contest only his second event in the UK but is hoping for a strong run in his MH Motorsport Fiesta R2T.
“I am really looking forward to contesting the Pirelli Rally” says Solberg. “I was a little surprised to be leading the championship after round one as the event was very challenging but we will of course try hard to get more points to help our lead in the Junior BRC”.
Fellow Fiesta R2T pilot Callum Devine and co-driver Keith Moriarty opened their British Championship assault with a solid fifth spot. Having previously campaigned the 1600cc variant of the Fiesta back in 2014, the Northern Irishman would make the switch to an R2T for the very first time on the Border Counties.
An unlucky turbo pipe issue on the closing stages of the event halted progress up the rankings, but was confidently setting some impressive stage times during the event.
“It was a really steep learning curve to jump straight into the R2T on the event after just a brief test beforehand” says Devine. “It was tough having everything thrown at us such as writing our own notes, driving in the dark and actually driving on the gravel again. But at the mid-point of the second day we had really settled in a started to set some decent times. We were unlucky with the turbo issue but I’m really looking forward to the Pirelli now and the goal is certainly a podium this time out.”
MH Motorsport will also bring three more Fiesta’s to the event, with the 1600cc version suitable for the Cadet Cup category. They will be driven by Josh Cornwell, Alex Waterman and Nabilia Tejpar.
The Pirelli Rally takes place on Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th April.

Tom Cave to debut Hyundai Motorsport's New Generation i20 R5 in British Rally Championship
Posted: March 8, 2017 10:36 AM
It has been confirmed that Tom Cave will drive an i20 R5 on the forthcoming Pirelli International Rally, round two of the Prestone MSA British Rally Championship. The event, that takes place on 29th & 30th April, marks the car's first ever appearance at this level of competition in the UK.
"It's great to have the opportunity to debut this car in a round of the British Rally Championship", said Tom. "The Hyundai has previously been seen on rounds of the WRC - including Rally GB - and other overseas events, so I am delighted to be the first drive it in the BRC."
The New Generation i20 R5 is to be supplied and run by an experienced private Hyundai Motorsport customer team, who compete regularly in national championships across Europe. Tom is scheduled to carry out a substantial test in the car ahead of the Kielder Forest-based event.
"Having been developed throughout the course of 2016, the i20 R5 has already proved it can be competitive and, because it's the first time for the car in the BRC, I'm expecting it to attract a lot of attention. I'm therefore intending to do the best job I can for everyone involved and to show the car in the best way possible."
It was announced last week that Tom will contest the first round of the British Rally Championship - this month's Border Counties Rally - in a Dom Buckley prepared Fiesta R5. The drive in the Hyundai is currently just for one event and therefore the 25 year-old Welshman is hoping that a good result and the exposure surrounding it will give momentum to the rest of his season.
"Having finished second last year, the aim is to be able to continue in the BRC for the whole season, as I believe I have an opportunity to fight for the title. I therefore hope that with a good result, the drive in the i20 will lead on to other things - hopefully in another Hyundai!"
Tom will be partnered this season by his co-driver from 2016, James Morgan and said: "I'm delighted James will be joining me again. Whilst the team and the what I'm driving will change this season, it's great that with James the consistency will be maintained inside the car."
Tom's Hyundai drive next month is supported by DMACK Tyres, Trefeddian Hotel, Walero and Atech Racing.
