BOYLES ARE CLARE CHAMPIONS
Posted: October 13, 2016 6:39 AM
Donegal’s Declan Boyle (Fiesta WRC) co-driven by his cousin Brian Boyle won the Hyundai Limerick Motor Centre Clare Rally, the penultimate round of the Triton Showers National Rally Championship. They finished 56.8 seconds ahead of the similar car of Clonmel’s Roy White and his Cork co-driver James O’Brien. Monaghan’s Josh Moffett/James Fulton (Fiesta R5) were 5.2 seconds further behind in third.
Meath’s Trevor Mulligan (Ford Escort) and his Cork co-driver Sean Hayde clinched the rally.ie category and are virtually assured of the Triton Showers Mk. 2 Challenge Trophy.
Moffett was quickest through the opening stage where foggy conditions added to the difficulties posed by early morning rain. The Monaghan man led the Fiesta WRC of top seed Declan Boyle by 18.1 seconds with Roy White 1.9 seconds further behind in third. Newly crowned champion White had issues with the launch control and the handbrake and lost time at the hairpin junctions. Owen Murphy in his Skoda Fabia S2000 occupied fourth in a top six that also featured the Escort of late entry Chris Armstrong and the Fiesta R5 of Stephen Wright.
Moffett increased his advantage to lead to 27.3 seconds on the second stage but Boyle responded on the third stage to trim the margin to 21.3 seconds as the crews arrived at the Shannon service park.
There, rally leader Moffett remarked,
“Everything is grand, I’m actually finding grip out there.” Boyle agreed there was grip but quipped, “I’m trying to find it, I need to go in deeper into the corners. I’m delighted with these conditions, it’s my first rally in wet weather since last February.”
White in third – 12.5 seconds behind Boyle was far from happy with his driving and had a problem with the brakes.
“I had to be careful at the tight hairpin junctions.”
Peadar Hurson (Subaru WRC) down in ninth after the opening stage when the launch control failed twice made up ground to occupy fourth – but he was already 55.8 seconds off the lead.
Fifth placed Owen Murphy (Skoda Fabia S2000) had to negotiate a chicane bale that was dislodged on the opening stage, he enjoyed some good fortune when a wire to the alternator cracked on the road section back to the service park. The top ten also featured the Fiesta R5 of Brendan Cumiskey, who reckoned the suspension was to soft; Daniel Cronin (Mitsubishi) and the Escort duo of Chris Armstrong and Barry Ryan.
Elsewhere, Derek McGeehan stopped on the opening stage when his Mini WRC filled with smoke, it transpired to be related to the new paddle system. He returned under Rally2. A broken front shaft on the second stage cost Callum Duffy (Skoda) significant time, but he still managed to finish the loop.
Hurson’s rally ended on S.S. 4, apparently, his Subaru picked up a front left wheel puncture that subsequently caused him to go off the road, the left side of the car was damaged after contact with a tree. Moffett, who stopped at the scene along with Owen Murphy and Stephen Wright, were all accorded the time set by Roy White. Boyle, running first on the road set the fastest time to trim Moffett’s lead to 5.3 seconds.
By the end of the fifth stage Boyle became the new leader as Moffett lost some fifty seconds when he had to drive the final six kilometres with a flat front wheel.
“It was a slow puncture, I think I may have picked it up at the Hurson incident.”
Boyle was also quickest on S.S. 6 and he arrived at the final service with a lead of 53.1 seconds. Second placed Moffett was 4.6 seconds ahead of White, who reckoned his performance through the second loop was an improvement.
Owen Murphy retired during S.S. 5 with a broken rear differential, on the previous stage Daniel Cronin (Mitsubishi) stopped at the second junction when a turbo pipe came adrift, he rejoined under Rally 2.
Meanwhile, Wright moved up to fourth followed by Cumiskey and top rear wheel drive exponent, Chris Armstrong, who admitted he wasn’t taking any chances in the slippery conditions.
Meath’s Trevor Mulligan (Escort) was very much in championship mode, having fitted new brakes it was also a confidence building exercise. Damien Gallagher (Escort), who had to contend with a misted windscreen on the opening loop was eighth overall.
Scotland’s Paul McKinnion (Subaru WRC) had no wipers on the fourth stage. Group N leader Aidan Wray (Mitsubishi) was trouble free as he completed the top ten. Callum Duffy in his Millington engine Skoda Fabia had power steering troubles on the second loop.
On the final loop, Boyle went on to claim his fourth win of the season. White, who was quickest though the Power Stage edged out Moffett to claim second by a margin of 5.2 seconds. Wright and Cumiskey completed the top five.
Armstrong won the Modified category as Mulligan took valuable points to win the rally.ie category and all but clinch the Triton Showers Mk. 2 Challenge Trophy.
Boyle along with Niall Maguire, who was a non-starter and Hurson will battle for the runner-up spot in the Triton series on the final round in Donegal.
The Group N category was won by Tyrone’s Aidan Wray (Mitsubishi), who finished some 40 seconds ahead of Monaghan’s Shane Maguire (Mitsubishi).
Meanwhile, in the Junior category of the Triton Showers National Rally Championship Donegal’s Michael Boyle (Honda Civic) took an emphatic victory as both his rivals, Gary McNamee (Honda Civic) and Colin Roche (Toyota Starlet) both failed to finish. Boyle and McNamee will now battle for the title on the final round in Donegal in early October.

CHAMPIONS READY FOR TAKE OFF IN SHANNON - Preview courtesy of Triton Showers – proud sponsors of the Irish National Rally Championship.

Although Clonmel’s Roy White and his Cork co-driver James O’Brien have clinched the Triton Showers National Rally Championship, several categories and classes remain undecided ahead of Sunday’s penultimate round, the Hyundai Limerick Motor Centre Clare Rally in association with the Oakwood Hotel, Shannon.
Former champion Donegal’s Declan Boyle (Ford Fiesta WRC) is the top seed and goes in search of his fourth win in the current campaign. He took victory in the last round in Clonmel and can still clinch the runner-up spot in the eight round series as he battles with the Subaru WRC’s of former champions Niall Maguire and Peadar Hurson.
Ultra consistent all season new champion Roy White is aiming to gain his first outright win on the Triton trail.
“We are going to play with a few set-ups and see how it goes, the pressure is off so we can try more extremes to address the issues that we are having. I can afford to take a step back from being so aggressive with the car and try and fix my driving as well.”
The Clonmel man knows what he has to do,
“At square junctions I haven’t really got the hang of it (his Fiesta WRC), the front of it is nosing out or the back is swinging out, everywhere else the car is good, but the square junctions are a weakness and that is my fault. I think I might be overdriving the car in that scenario.”
Meanwhile, Warrenpoint’s Peadar Hurson (Subaru WRC) and Monaghan’s Niall Maguire will be aiming to raise their level of performance to try and match both Boyle and White. Hurson has yet to get the maximum from his S12B Subaru while Maguire seeks strong form as the season nears completion.
Monaghan’s Stephen Wright (Ford Fiesta R5) is using the nine stage rally as a shakedown for the Cork “20” International Rally, he was sixth in the last round, the Tipperary Stonethrowers Rally.
Championship sponsor Maynooth’s Kevin Barrett (Subaru WRC) had a disappointing outing in Clonmel where he finished twentieth and he will be eager to finish in the top ten, he occupies the number seven slot.
Cork drivers Owen Murphy (Skoda Fabia S2000), Daniel Cronin (Mitsubishi) and Meath’s Trevor Mulligan (Ford Escort) complete the top ten.
Mulligan leads the rally.ie series (top two wheel drive in overall classification) and the Triton Showers Ford Escort Mk. 2 Champions Trophy series. Gary McPhillips and John Reddington – are his respective closest challengers, however, McPhillips is not amongst the Clare entry. Mulligan’s event opposition features Tipperary’s Barry Ryan, Tyrone’s Ryan Loughran, Donegal’s Damien Gallagher, Limerick’s Paul Purtill and Ed Synan and Kerry’s Mike Quinn, all in Ford Escorts.
Scottish driver Calum Duffy (Skoda Fabia), Dundalk’s Brendan Cumiskey (Ford Fiesta R5) are also on the entry list.
The Group N category is headed by reigning Triton Showers Motorsport Safety Group N champion Aidan Wray (Mitsubishi EvoX) with his series rivals Monaghan’s Shane Maguire, who has the same point’s total and Maynooth’s Paul Barrett (Subaru) all in the mix and all with an opportunity to claim the title that is likely to go down to the wire.
The local entry includes Michael Fitzgibbon (Honda Civic), Niall O’Sullivan (Citroen C2), John O’Sullivan (Citroen C2), Fergal Keane and Keith Naughton in Honda Civics and the Escort duo Tommy McDonagh and Pa Malone.
The Triton Showers National Rally Junior series could be determined in Shannon with Michael Boyle (Honda Civic), Gary McNamee (Honda Civic) and Colin Roche (Toyota Starlet) all vying for success and the automatic qualification for the Billy Coleman Young Driver of the Year award. With the best four rounds to count, a class win for Meath’s McNamee will secure the laurels, however, Boyle, the son of top seed, Declan or Cork’s Colin Roche can ensure a final round decider in Donegal should either take the maximum ten points.
Meanwhile, Cavan’s Jenna McCann (Ford Fiesta), Roscommon’s Cormac Phelan (Honda Civic), Wexford’s Tonya (Honda Civic) and Monaghan’s Sean Connolly (Toyota Corolla) are amongst the drivers that have already secured class wins in the Triton series.

The Clare Motor Club are delighted to announce details of the 2016 Clare Stages Rally which will take place on September 17th. & 18th.
This very popular event has been running since 1988 and down through the years has attracted competitors from all over Ireland and the UK.
The 2016 event is Round 7 of the Triton Showers National Rally Championship and Round 5 of the Top Part West Coast Rally Championship.
Chairman of the Motorsport Ireland Rallies Committee Ger Healy from Adare, Co. Limerick has taken on the role as Clerk of the Course for this year’s event.
Hyundai Limerick Motor Centre who have been sponsoring stages in Clare for several years have come on board as title sponsor for the 2016 event. The Hyundai dealership which is based on the Ballysimon Road, Limerick is Irelands longest serving Hyundai dealership, and has been supplying Hyundai's in Limerick City and County since 1989. Limerick Motor Centre have been marketing the Hyundai brand in Co Clare since 2010 and North Tipperary since 2013.
Dealer Principal Martin O’Mara said
"Sponsorship of The Clare Stages Rally is an ideal opportunity to showcase the Hyundai range of vehicles and also the Limerick Motor Centre brand through corporate signage on the highways and byways of Clare."
Clare Motor Club have a unique association with the Hyundai brand as the Hyundai Accent World Rally Car made its Irish debut at the 2002 Clare Stages Rally in the hands of Limerick Driver Ollie O’Donovon who finished the event 5th overall.
This year has seen a major increase in new car sales in Ireland with Hyundai sitting in 3rd position in Ireland with the Hyundai Tucson the biggest selling car in Clare to date in 2016. Hyundai is also becoming a major player in world rallying with the Hyundai i20 competing in the World Rally Championship and the new Hyundai i20 R5 almost ready for homologation which will then see it competing in various rallying championships worldwide and hopefully Ireland in the coming years.
The 2016 Clare Stages will have its HQ at The Oak Wood Arms Hotel in Shannon with Scrutiny, Parc Ferme and Centralized Servicing all based in Shannon town. The Rally format is three stages which will be repeated three times in the Shannon Region.
