Callum Devine has completed one of his most dominant showings to date, with a top two wheel drive finish at last weekend’s Cartell.ie Killarney International Rally of the Lakes. It was a significant result to repay the faith shown in Callum by the Billy Coleman award panel for the nomination for the start of the year. The finish was important to get Callum and Keith Moriarty’s Clonakilty Blackpudding Irish Tarmac challenge back on track after a troubled run on the Circuit of Ireland Rally.
Driving their Opel Adam R2, Callum and Keith got off to a strong start on the opening Gortnagane stage taking 24 seconds out of their nearest class rival and by first service they had extended their lead to 44 seconds. Callum commented “The first two stages were tricky with changing weather conditions, tyre choice was a gamble for everyone and it seems we got it just right”.
Indeed, the changeable weather continued throughout the day with scattered showers rolling over Co. Kerry. Despite this, Callum went on to take fastest times on the rest of the days tests to lead the R2 category by well over two and half minutes at the end of day one. For the Derry/ Limerick pairing it was a perfect day.
Day two of the Killarney based event opened with the world renowned Molls Gap, a steady run for Callum saw him take another fastest R2 time to stretch his lead to just over three minutes.
The team took the decision to reduce their pace slightly to preserve the car and safeguard a strong points haul in the Irish Tarmac Championship, the FIA Celtic Cup and the PlasticBags.ie Southern 4 Rally Championship. Despite slowing his pace slightly in the closing stages, Callum finished the event with 14 fastest times from a possible 16 taking the R2 win by almost six minutes. Speaking at the finish ramp back at the Gleneagle Hotel Callum was naturally delighted; “It’s a dream result after the disappointment at the Circuit! It was a fantastic Rally of the Lakes for us, Keith has done another brilliant job on the notes, the guys in service have ran the car faultlessly for me all weekend. This result has helped us with a good points haul in the Tarmac Championship and leaves us in a great place going to Donegal in June.”
The next round of the Clonakilty Blackpudding Irish Tarmac Championship and FIA Celtic Cup is the Joule Donegal International Rally on June 17th – 19th, based in Letterkenny, Co. Donegal.

Fisher leads Tarmac Championship after Killarney

The Cartell.ie International Rally of the Lakes was the fourth round of the Clonakilty Blackpudding Irish Tarmac Championship and as usual the Killarney based event proved to be as tough and demanding as ever. There were sixteen stages over the two days and 2016 saw Anthony O’Connor take over as Clerk of the Course for the first time. One of the most notable changes was that the Molls Gap stage was not to open proceedings this year, with the tough Gortnagane stage beginning the event. This classic test is one that favours the brave and Alastair Fisher was the fastest of the championship contenders after that stage and by the end of the second stage he was still ahead, albeit being pushed hard by Sam Moffett. With the weather being most dry and sunny the speeds were high, although the morning stages had some loose gravel on junctions.
There was drama for Keith Cronin just before the start when the car refused to fire up properly and by the time he eventually got going it was inevitable he was going to incur a lot of road penalties. In the end he was penalised 19 minutes which put him well out of the running. Joe McGonigle was another to hit problems with a puncture on the opening stage compounded by the car slipping off the jack and rendering it unusable. Fortunately a marshal was at hand to supply another and despite seven minutes lost, was still in the rally. The next two stages were a repeat of the Gortnagane and Banard stages and the championship leader Josh Moffett who had been fifth went too wide on a narrowing right hander and clipped a stone ditch which caused the car to roll into retirement. Stephen Wright and Owen Murphy were also in the top six after the fourth stage and going extremely well.
The crews then prepared to tackle a new pair of stages in the afternoon, Rockfield and Dromin. Fisher continued to set some excellent times but Moffett was proving very difficult to shake off with a handful of seconds separating the pair. By the end of the first day Fisher was holding a strong second behind rally leader Garry Jennings with Moffett still challenging for maximum points just thirteen seconds behind. Wright, Murphy and Aaron McHale were to top five registered crews overnight, while Joe McGonigle retired on the penultimate stage of the day after a spin damaged the radiator. Cronin was still running but still suffering from an underperforming car as he struggled to find the cause of the power loss. Callum Devine was setting some stunning times in his Opel Adam to lead class two overnight and was also ninth overall, just ahead of David Guest who was leading Group N.
The second day in contrast was very wet and foggy which made life difficult for the crews especially on Molls Gap and Beallaghbeama which were particularly badly affected by fog due to the elevation. With Donagh Kelly in the Focus WRC now ahead and pulling away, Alastair Fishers hold on second place became somewhat more straightforward when Moffett punctured on Beallaghbeama. This cost the Monaghan driver over thirty seconds and left him almost fifty seconds behind Fisher. Wright was still holding a comfortable fourth place, while Owen Murphy was getting used to driving the Skoda on the wet for the first time as he continued to acclimatise to his new car.
Over the remaining stages there was little change as despite backing off, Fisher did enough to take maximum points for the second event in succession to move into the overall lead in the championship. Sam Moffett was only 37 seconds behind Fisher by the end and rueing the earlier puncture, but still did enough to move into second overall in the series. Stephen Wrights best performance of the season moved him into third overall just ahead of Josh Moffett, while thirteenth was Keith Cronin’s final position as he eventually got the car sorted on the latter stages, but he still drops to fifth overall in the championship.
Callum Devine took his third maximum score from the four rounds to date after another stunning performance which netted him eighth overall and moved him back into the lead of the 2WD category. William Creighton took twelfth overall to stay in contention, but there was misfortune for Marty Gallagher who went into the final stage just ahead of Creighton, only to crash out. Fraser Mulholland took third placed points after losing a lot of time on the first day, while John Byrnes in the Renault Clio retired on the second day.
David Guest was ninth overall and winner of Group N for the third time this season which extends his lead in the series, while Brian O’Keeffe who led the category after the first two stages was forced to retire. Guest currently holds a ten point lead over Gus Kearney with Peter O’Kane and Pat Kearney not too far behind.

Modified Championship
Ross Marshall & Dave Robson from Scotland were the leaders of the Modified Championship going into this round, but an accident on Shanera put them out of the rally and also cost them the series lead. Davy Armstrong now leads the championship just two points ahead of Marshall with Wesley Patterson who didn’t compete in Killarney dropping to third. Eugene Meegan put in a superb drive to take maximum points in his BMW 1M to end a run of bad luck and get his championship bid back on track. Jack Newman was a new registration for the series before Killarney and finished an excellent second overall in an Escort, while last year’s Tarmac Junior champion John O’Sullivan took third place points in his Civic to move into fourth overall. John Bonner had been going extremely well on his first visit to Killarney but went off the road late on the first day while in fourth place.
Historic Championship
Frank Cunningham continued his recent good form by collecting another set of maximum points following victory in the Historic category of the Rally of the Lakes. He had over five minutes to spare over championship rival David Goose with both drivers in Mk2 Escorts. Philip McKibbin, James O’Mahony and Donal O’Connor were others to score points as several of their championship rivals hit problems. Among those to retire from the event included Philip Wylie, Alan Watkins and Richard Hall.

Junior Championship
The Junior Championship was into its third round and local driver Kieran O’Donoghue took an excellent win in the category and maximum points into the bargain. Kevin Horgan took second placed points following his non finish in West Cork. Championship leader Justin Ryan extended his lead in the series but Noel Murphy is still in hot pursuit. Diarmuid Hallahan scored his first points of the season while John O’Flaherty and Christy McCarthy were retirements.

Killarney to provide another great Tarmac Championship tussle

The 2016 Clonakilty Blackpudding Irish Tarmac Championship is about to pass the midway point with the forthcoming Cartell.ie International Rally of the Lakes, with the Killarney based event the fourth of the seven round series. Championship leader Josh Moffett in a Fiesta R5 will be hoping his recent fine run of form will continue after an excellent drive to fourth on the Circuit of Ireland as well as winning his home Monaghan event last weekend. He will certainly have to be at his best as his closest rivals in the championship, Keith Cronin and Alastair Fisher who are second and third in the series, will be pushing very hard from the word go.Cronin who is almost on home territory on this event led the series after the opening two rounds in his Citroen DS3 R5, but a first stage retirement on the Circuit of Ireland sees him in second, albeit only four points behind. Fisher had a great drive in his Fiesta to third place on the Circuit, a result which gave him maximum championship points and got his season back on track after crashing out of West Cork. The battle between these three drivers is expected to be intense and with Sam Moffett & Stephen Wright waiting in the wings in joint fourth place it would be a brave person to predict the outcome of this event. Sam Moffett is of course a previous winner of the Rally of the Lake and that experience could well bear fruit over the weekend. There are several Skoda S2000s on the list as well and Joe McGonigle in seventh overall in the championship has had a very good start to the year with three solid finishes. The Donegal driver won the Lark in the Park last weekend and confidence will be high going into an event he has competed on several times in the past.
Owen Murphy had a troubled run in his Skoda on its West Cork debut with a faulty intercom and then a clutch problem eventually forcing him into Rally 2. He will be hoping for better luck in Killarney and with his undoubted speed could very well be on the pace of the top runners. Aaron MacHale is another to move to a Skoda since last year and has competed on two of the three rounds to date and has admitted to finding it a steep learning curve, but is growing more confident in the car with each event. John Mulholland (Skoda) and Joe Connolly (Fiesta) will also be hoping to gain more championship points over the weekend as they also adjust to Class 5 cars for 2016.Group N is still being led by Clonakilty driver David Guest despite not taking part in the third round, the Circuit of Ireland. The Mitsubishi driver took two maximum scores on the opening rounds to open up a gap, but the Kearney brothers, Gus & Pat both scored well on the Circuit to move into second and fourth overall in the category while Peter O'Kane holds third place. Brian O'Keeffe only competed on one round to date, a retirement in West Cork, but is familiar with Killarney and could get back into the running with a good result. The Front Wheel drive category is as competitive as ever with Callum Devine and William Creighton neck and neck after the three rounds to date, while Mary Gallagher and Fraser Mulholland have increased their pace with each round and are still very much in the hunt. David Carney in his Citroen DS3 R3 Max has scored on only one round to date and will be looking to improve on that.
The Modified championship sees Scottish crew Ross Marshall & Dave Robson arrive in Killarney with a two point lead in the series. With second placed Wesley Patterson not doing Killarney it's a chance for Marshall to extend his lead while Davy Armstrong in third place can't be discounted either. Jason O'Mahony who was second after the opening round is back in his Mitsubishi Lancer while Eugene Meegan and John Bonner will be fancied to perform strongly as well. The Historic championship is being led by Frank Cunningham who has had an improvement in fortunes since switching from a Sierra to an Escort. Frank faces some strong competition in Killarney though with James O'Mahony, Philip Wylie and David Goose all capable of a strong result while Alan Watkins and Luke McCarthy are also very quick. Richard Hall has entered in his Sierra Cosworth and is another who is capable of a very good result if the car proves to be reliable. The Junior championship is into its third round (the Circuit of Ireland wasn't a counting round), and Justin Ryan has got off to the perfect start with two maximum scores to date. Noel Murphy has also performed consistently to lie in second place ahead of John O'Flaherty and Christy McCarthy who are tied for third place. Kevin Horgan is in fifth place after a good result in Galway was spoiled somewhat by having car problems just before the start of West Cork. Kieran O'Donoghue and Diarmuid Hallahan have yet to score, but O'Donoghue was extremely quick in Galway and could take maximum points here.
The sixteen stage event begins at 9.30am on Saturday morning with the classic Gortnagane stage and there are eight stages on the first day with the first car due back in Parc Ferme just after 6pm. The second day begins with the classic Molls Gap test and again there are eight stages in total before the first car arrives back at the finish ramp just after 5.30pm.

Local crews to the fore at the Cartell.ie Rally of Lakes

A new spectator friendly route is the key ingredient of this year's Cartell.ie Rally of the Lakes that takes place in Killarney this weekend.
All of the action, over 16 special stages takes place within 25km of the town, with the bulk of the action set for mid or east Kerry.
Over 140 crews from all over Ireland and beyond are set to tackle the county's biggest motorsport event.
Unusually, the rally does not open with a run over Moll's Gap. Instead the daunting ribbon of tarmac tat runs parallel to the Killarney to Millstreet main road and known locally as Gortnagane is the opening test. This is followed by loop of stages bear Millstreet and Rathmore before the rally heads east to new territory around Miltown. The Dromin Hill stage, last used by the Circuit of Kerry Rally in the early 1980s makes a return alongside spectator favourite Rockfield before the day's action concludes around 6pm.
Sunday is run over a lot more familiar territory with Moll's Gap and Balleaghbeama proceeding newer versions of Carragh Lake and Shanera. Unusually, Caragh Lake is the final stage of the rally before the crews head for the podium finish at the Gleneagle Hotel.
Leading local driver is Alan Ring who will be hoping to put a recent run of bad luck behind him on his home stages. The Castleisland man was forced to retire his newly acquired Ford Fiesta R5 from the recent Rose Hotel Circuit of Kerry due to fuel pressure issues. He starts at nine, four places behind Bantry-driver Keith Cronin, who has local co-driver Mikie Galvin on the notes. The pair will be hoping to regain the lead in the Clonakilty Black Pudding Irish Tarmac Rally Championship following a non-finish on the Circuit of Ireland three weeks ago. Fergus O'Meara and Brian O'Doherty are the leading local team in the national section of the rally. They have fitted a newer, more-powerful, engine to their Ford Escort Mk2 in an effort to stay ahead of chasing uncle and nephew team of Ed Murphy and John McCarthy.
Other local family crews tacking the rally include father and son team Charlie Hickey/Johnny Hickey (Ford Escort RS) and Charlie's brother John in a similar car. Andrew Duggan returns form Abu Dhabi for the weekend and he will have his sister Tara co-driving.
Kevin O'Donoghue and David Randles will run their newly built BMW E30 for the first time.
Tadhg O'Sullivan/Eoin O'Leary (Ford Escort Mk2) and Ken O'Neill/Ronald Riordan (Ford Puma S1600) are worth keeping an eye on too.

When Dermot Healy stepped down as Clerk of the Course for the International Rally of the Lakes after five years at the helm there was much speculation in rallying circles as to who would become the 7th Clerk of the Course for the Killarney and District Motor Club?s flagship event.
The speculation ended when Anthony O'Connor, a salesman with Central Car Sales in Farranfore was named as the agreed choice of the Club to head up the team for the 2016 Cartell.ie Rally of the Lakes which takes place over the Bank Holiday Weekend of April 29th - May 1st.
Anthony, who comes from Ardfert was first introduced to rallying when he spent many years as a Civil Defence Ambulance crew member providing medical cover for the various events run by Killarney and District Motor Club.
When he moved to Farranfore he joined the Killarney Club and since then has acted in virtually every role in the clubs various events, before taking the final step to the Clerk of the Course this year.
This year sees service in Liebherr on both days along with stages within 30kms of Killarney, There is a new stage for the Saturday loop, along with the classic stages of Molls Gap, Ballaughbeama, Carragh Lake that Killarney are renowned far and wide for.
Anthony wants to make the rally more competitor and spectator friendly and is looking forward to the rally.
