Donegal cousins Declan and Brian Boyle (Ford Fiesta WRC) won the Trim based Smartpart ALMC Rally, the fifth round of the Triton Showers National Rally Championship.
Taking the lead on the second stage they went on to finish 43.4 seconds clear of the Ford Fiesta WRC of title favourites Clonmel’s Roy White and Cork’s James O’Brien. Warrenpoint’s Peadar Hurson and his Monaghan co-driver /Damien Connolly (Subaru WRC) were 15.6 seconds further behind in third.
Former champion Hurson (Subaru WRC) was quickest on the opening stage albeit a half a second ahead of Boyle with Monaghan’s Niall Maguire eight seconds further behind in third followed by Triton Showers series leader Roy White. With fastest times on the remaining pair of stages of the opening loop Boyle arrived at the Trim service park as rally leader. The Donegal driver reckoned that the two stages suited his Fiesta WRC as he led Hurson by 14.8 seconds, the latter stated the suspension settings of his Subaru was far too soft.
White was just 0.8 of a second further behind in third - he lost time on the opening stage when he hadn’t his Fiesta in gear at the start line. Niall Maguire was untroubled in fourth and like all the drivers reckoned that the dust on the roads made the stages very slippery.
Late entry Desi Henry (Skoda Fabia R5) was next on the leaderboard, he clipped a chicane on the first stage and damaged the front right wing of his Skoda Fabia R5. Steve Wood (Subaru) was next in classification with seventh placed Ashley Field (Darrian) leading the Modified category. The top ten was completed by the Subaru WRC trio of Mel Evans, Hugh Hunter and Steve Simpson.
Elsewhere, Shane Maguire (Mitsubishi) led Group N – 9.5 seconds ahead of the Mitsubishi of Aidan Wray. Paul Barrett (Subaru) reckoned that the suspension of his car was far too hard for the terrain.
Out on the second loop Boyle gained some five seconds on the fourth stage while White was quickest on S.S. 5 and Boyle responded with the best time on S.S. 6 – nine tenths of a second ahead of White. In the overall context, Boyle led White by 20.3 seconds. Using the same set of tyres for the second loop Boyle claimed that he was having to brake earlier due to the lack of grip. For his part White was content with his pace.
Having changed the differential and suspension settings of his Subaru, Hurson was third – 9.5 seconds adrift of White and 16.6 seconds clear of Niall Maguire.
Desi Henry completed the loop without any drama to consolidate fifth. Hugh Hunter retired on S.S. 4 when his Subaru hit a tree. Steve Wood remained the top overseas driver – he was fifth, followed by the Subaru WRC’s of Mel Evans and Steve Simpson.
In the Modified section, Ashley Field (Darrian) suffered from brake issues with his Darrian, he was ninth in a top ten that also included the Escort of Cavan’s Chris Armstrong, the margin between them was 12.3 seconds. The Escorts of Trevor Mulligan and Frank Kelly were very much in contention and just seconds behind Armstrong.
On the final loop Boyle dominated all three stages including the Power Stage as he took a maximum 23 points, however, with White taking second spot and two points from the Power Stage (20 points) Boyle’s title bid has all but evaporated.
Meanwhile, Hurson kept his bid on track with third place while fourth placed Niall Maguire also remains in the reckoning for the Vard Memorial Trophy.
Henry and Wood completed an unchanged top six. Overseas drivers Mel Evans and Steve Simpson were next in classification.
Cavan’s Chris Armstrong (Escort) punched in some cracking times on the final loop to win the Modified category ahead of the Darrian of Ashley Field, who rounded off the top ten.
The Group N category was won by Tyrone’s Aidan Wray/Kieran McGrath (Mitsubishi), who also won the Triton Showers “Drive of the Day” award.
The Junior category was won by Meath’s Gary McNamee/Kieran O’Donoghue (Honda Civic) and the Historic section was won by Louth’s Philip McKibbin/Lynn McKibbin (Escort).
The Irish team won the “Triton Showers Nations Cup” defeating Britain by 9 to 7. The competition, involving twelve teams from each side, was based on the highest number of finishers in the top twenty.
TRITON SHOWERS SERIES TAKES FLIGHT WITH ALMC AT TRIM - Preview courtesy of Triton Showers – proud sponsors of the Irish National Rally Championship.
Posted: September 22, 2016 7:38 AM
The Triton Showers National Rally Championship takes flight for the second half of the season on Sunday next with the Trim based Smartpart ALMC Rally. It marks the return of the Dublin based club to the national series for the first time since 1999.
It’s a crucial event for former double champion and top seed Declan Boyle (Ford Fiesta WRC). The Donegal driver has three non-finishes to his credit and with the series based on the best six from eight events, in reality he has no room for any further error. His only point’s haul so far was on the Circuit of Kerry where he took twenty points for victory and two from the Power Stage. While there is no doubting his pace, a lack of reliability has put a third title in jeopardy. On the last round in Cavan he led entering the final loop but retired with an alternator problem. It’s a huge task for Boyle, who also needs the extra three points for winning the Power Stage so he can begin to close the deficit to series leader Roy White.
In stark contrast White has scored in all four rounds to date and while overall victory has eluded the Clonmel driver thus far he has taken the maximum 23 points in Carlow and Cavan where the respective winners (Manus Kelly and Sam Moffett) were not registered for the Triton Showers series.
Although he has a 15-point lead it is far too early to speak of a first title given the very fickle nature of the sport while the likes of former champions Niall Maguire and Peadar Hurson are still very much in the title hunt when dropped scores are taken into consideration.
Maguire is having one of his better seasons in recent years and claimed twenty points in Cavan – his best of the current season. In Trim, he will revert to his S12B Subaru.
The nine-stage rally will represent Peadar Hurson’s second outing in his recently acquired S12B Subaru. The Warrenpoint driver took time to get the grips with his new surroundings and he will be expected to mount a more serious challenge this time around.
Meanwhile, having crashed out of fourth place in Cavan, Daragh O’Riordan (Ford Fiesta WRC) returns to the fray, the Cork driver has appeared in three rounds so far but only registered in Carlow where he gleamed nineteen Triton points.
The Smartpart ALMC Rally is also a counting round of the MSA Asphalt Championship, it is the only Irish round of the seven event series. It accounts for a strong overseas contingent within the top ten. Welsh ace Hugh Hunter (Subaru WRC) heads the overseas contingent, he has experienced the National series in previous years and won the Galway Summer Rally in 2013. It will be interesting to see how his pace compares with the Triton regulars. It will be similar for the likes of Manchester driver Steve Simpson (Subaru WRC) and Melvyn Evans (Subaru WRC), the only overseas to have won the magnificent Vard Memorial Trophy, who will be keen to renew rivalry with the Irish drivers. Welshman Damian Cole (Ford Fiesta WRC), who leads the British series, occupies the number nine spot in a top ten that is completed by Maynooth’s Kevin Barrett in the Triton Showers liveried Subaru WRC.
Elsewhere, Kerry’s Alan Ring will compete in his Ford Fiesta R5, he campaigned the car in R5+ specification in the Circuit of Kerry but has decided to run the car in R5 specification for the remainder of the season.
Another of the overseas driver Steve Wood (Subaru WRC) returns to the Triton Showers series following a confidence bosting victory on the non-championship Circuit of Munster Rally in early June.
The ALMC entry also includes Cavan’s Stephen McCann in the ex-Denis Cronin Subaru WRC, and the overseas quintet of Simon Chapman (Proton), John Stone (Ford Fiesta), Bob Fowden (Subaru), David Turnbull (Subaru) and David Hardie (Subaru).
Louth driver Brendan Cumiskey (Ford Fiesta R5) is also on the entry list.
In the two-wheel drive Modified category, the main protagonists are Tyrone’s Frank Kelly, Cavan’s Chris Armstrong, Meath’s Trevor Mulligan, Kildare’s Jack Newman and Armagh’s Damian Toner, all in Ford Escorts.
In Group N reigning champion Tyrone’s Aidan Wray (Mitsubishi) is the top seed and will be followed by Maynooth’s Paul Barrett (Subaru), Monaghan’s Shane Maguire (Mitsubishi), Donegal’s Trevor Bustard (Mitsubishi) and Dubliner Neil Tohill (Mitsubishi)
The Historic category includes Malcolm Pedlow (BMW), John Reid (Escort) and Duncan Buck (Porsche).
In the Junior category, series leader Michael Boyle (Honda Civic), Colin Roche (Toyota Starlet) and Gary McNamee (Honda Civic) are the top three seeds.
As contenders for the 2016 MSA Asphalt Rally Championship make the annual trip across the Irish Sea to the Smartpart ALMC Stages Rally, multiple former champion Damian Cole and co-driver Paul Morris top the overall points tables in their Ford
Fiesta WRC. In Championship terms, third overall on the Tour of Epynt and 4th on the Manx National Rally have produced significantly different outcomes - two registered crews (Steve Simpson/Patrick Walsh and Simon Mauger/Jon Hawkins) finished
ahead of them on Epynt, but they returned home from the Isle of Man with maximums as they continue their bid for the coveted title. Cole won the ALMC Stages back in 2010 and, since then, has finished in runner-up spot on three separate occasions. Now would be a good time to take a second victory but, as the event is also a round of the Triton Showers Irish National Rally Championship this year, the battle for top honours will be fiercer than ever!
Having started the season with a victory, Steve Simpson (Subaru Impreza WRC) was then forced to miss Round 2 due to work commitments. With Patrick Walsh reading the notes, Steve returns for the ALMC Stages as he attempts to regain the upper
hand. With each competitor’s five best scores from the seven rounds to count, there is still plenty of time for some major changes to the look of the leaderboard!
John Stone, Championship runner-up in 2014, and defending Asphalt Championship co-driver Jack Morton finished 6th on the Isle of Man, their first appearance in this year’s series, in their Legend Fires Fiesta S2500. They’re back for more now as the
season heads towards the halfway point. Meanwhile, David Tinn/Giles Dykes (Proton Satria Neo) and Bob Fowden/Paul Wakely (Impreza WRC) are both lying outside the Top Ten with just one score apiece so far. 2015 Class B13 winner David Hardie and
co-driver John McCulloch, who was 3rd overall in last year’s Championship, had an all-too-brief return on the Manx before their Impreza succumbed to brake problems after only a couple of stages. Hence, they could now do with a result to open their
account in the points.
Group N, two strong finishes from Welshman Wynne Watkins see him holding the upper hand in his Impreza, while 2014/5 champions David & Mathew White’s defence of their title got off to shaky start with a DNF on Epynt. However, as we’ve
said, there’s still plenty of scope for change!....
After an absence of a couple of years, Ashley Field returned to the Championship on the Isle of Man in a new Darrian T90 GTR and, for a while during the opening leg, led the event outright in his two-wheel drive car. Subsequently, low oil pressure (or so he
thought!) caused him to switch the engine off before any major damage occurred. However, further investigation revealed the problem to be a faulty sensor, rather than anything more serious. Oh, poo! No Millington Rear-Wheel Drive Challenge points for
the Mansfield driver, then.... Top honours in this category went to Alistair Inglis’ Lotus Exige on Epynt and the re-engineered Vauxhall Astra of Geoff Glover/Keith Barker on the Manx, and it is these two who top the table at present. Field’s Darrian will be back in action in Ireland where his son, Fred, will also be making his Asphalt Championship debut in a Vauxhall Adam....
On the subject of FWD cars, the AB Motorsport Front-Wheel Drive Challenge is currently the preserve of William Hill/Richard Crozier. Their Fiesta R200 has finished both events it started and, although eclipsed by Paul Clapham (Peugeot 106) on
Epynt and Ian Chadwick’s Honda Civic on the Manx, consistency keeps them in the ascendancy. Richard & Pat Egger (Vauxhall Nova) have also crossed the finish line on both occasions, while David Earthy/Sarah Edwards’ promising start was halted on
the Isle of Man when their Citroen C2R2’s gearbox cried ‘enough’....
West Midlanders Paul Clackett/David Millard (Suzuki Swift) and Jeff Simm/Matthew Daniels (Nissan Sunny) were both beset by mechanical bothers last time, but will view the ALMC Stages as the ideal opportunity to put their seasons back on track.
David & Mathew Smalley (Vauxhall Corsa) and Mathew Roberts (Citroen Saxo) also rejoin the Championship in Ireland.
The first car leaves the start of the ALMC Stages Rally at 9.20am on Sunday 3rd July and, at the completion of a route that includes 75 miles of special stages, the winners are due back at Rally HQ, the Castle Arch Hotel in Trim, Co. Meath, at 5.30pm.
Trim Gears Up for Smartpart ALMC Rally - Large Crowds Expected for Meeting of UK & Irish Championships
Posted: June 29, 2016 9:40 AM
With just days to go to the start of the 2016 Smartpart ALMC Stages Rally, motorsport fans are set for a treat as the rally will see crews from the Triton Showers National Rally Championship, the MSA Asphalt Rally Championship and the Midlands East Rally Championship go head-to-head over the County Meath special stages this weekend. With over 40 UK-based teams travelling to participate in the rally alongside teams from all across Ireland, Trim is set to be a hive of activity this weekend.
Leading the 105 competing crews away from the Rally HQ at the Castle Arch Hotel will be the 2014 Irish National & Irish Tarmac Rally Champions Declan & Brian Boyle from Donegal in their Ford Fiesta WRC. Having been the first crew to take a new-age World Rally Championship (WRC) specification Ford Fiesta onto the Irish Stages, Declan and Brian have endured a torrid season to date, with a win at the Circuit of Kerry being the only highlight of a year that has been plagued with mechanical issues - most recently, a gear selector failure while leading the Donegal International Rally. With the Leitirmacaward men competing at the Lurgan Park Rally on Saturday before making the short hop to Trim on Sunday, a weekend of more positive results will surely be a priority for the Boyles.
Next on the road will be the current Triton Showers National Rally Championship leaders, Roy White and James O’Brien also in a Fiesta WRC. Consistency has proven the key in the Tipperary/Cork crew’s success this season, with a solid points haul achieved in all of the championship rounds to date. With Boyle out of championship contention, White and O’Brien will no doubt be focussed on consolidating their championship advantage over rivals Niall Maguire and Enda Sherry from Monaghan and the Down/Monaghan pairing of Peader Hurson and Damien Connolly, all in Subaru S12 WRC’s. Other crews who will be looking to taste the victory champagne will be previous ALMC Rally winners Hugh Hunter / Aled Davies and Melvyn Evans / Mark Glennerster again in Subaru WRCs and current MSA Asphalt Championship leaders Damien Cole / Paul Morris in another of the new Ford Fiesta WRCs. A number of the new R5 specification cars will also be snapping at the heels of the top seeds with Kerry’s Alan Ring / Adrian Deasy fresh from victory at Raven Rock at the weekend, and Brendan Cumiskey / Ronan O’Kane rounding out the Top 20 starters.
A strong modified section sees Tyrone’s Frank Kelly bringing the famous ‘baby blue’ Ford Escort Mark II to Trim while local driver Trevor Mulligan from Kells will be looking to put home advantage to good use and he will be seeking a good score which will keep him in contention for the Triton Showers Mark II Trophy. Having been pipped to victory in the Killarney National Rally, Ashbourne’s Jack Newman with Ardee’s Domhnall Lennon on the notes, will be looking to be at the business end of proceedings while Cavan’s Chris Armstrong in yet another Mark II is looking to dust off the cobwebs having made only a handful of appearances this year. Defending MSA Asphalt Champion Simon Mauger is set to return to the Irish stages in his unique MG Metro 4M4 while John Stone in the Millington-powered Fiesta S2500 and Simon Chapman in his Proton S2500 will also make for interesting viewing on the fast tarmac stages around Trim.
Class 4 (Group N) is proving very a competitive class in the Triton Showers Championship with five crews currently in contention at the half way point with Shane Maguire (Monaghan), Paul Barrett (Kildare), Donegal Group N winner Aidan Wray (Tyrone), Neil Tohill (Dublin) and Trevor Bustard (Donegal) all separated by just five championship points. With the inclusion of a historic section in this year’s rally, a number of cars which are not often seen on the Irish stages will compete with Duncan & Cate Buck bringing their stunning Porsche 911RS over from England while Belfast’s Malcolm Pedlow and Ivor Ferguson will make the short trip down the M1 with their BMW 2002. Dubliner John Reid with Enda Shiels on the notes round out the top three historic entries.
The junior category has proven one of the most competitive classes at every event this season and Michael Boyle (Honda) (son of number 1 seed Declan) will be looking to keep his nearest championship rival Colin Roche (Toyota) at bay while Gary McNamee (Honda) from Kells will be attempting to leapfrog Boyle and Roche with a win on his home stages.
The rally kicks off this Saturday (July 2nd) with scrutiny at Smartpart in the Eamonn Duggan Industrial Estate, Trim followed by a Ceremonial Start at 7pm at Trim Castle, where competing cars and crews will pass under the start ramp and pause for photos and interviews. The competitive element of the event takes place on Sunday, July 3rd with the first car away from ‘parc-ferme’ at 9:25am. The rally will consist of 3 stages in the scenic Boyne Valley Region at Ballivor, Rathcore and Trim with centralised servicing at the Oaktree Business Park, Athboy Road, Trim. Please note that there will be a number of road closures in operation in these areas and diversions will be signposted on the day of the rally.
As with all motorsport events, safety comes first and foremost and intending spectators are asked to arrive to their locations early, identify a safe location to spectate from and to always follow the instructions of the event officials and marshals. Should any spectators be found to be standing in dangerous positions such as areas designated as “forbidden ground” or acting inappropriately along the route, stages will be cancelled.
The official event programme is on sale at a number of outlets in Trim and in areas along the rally route with a full list of retailers posted online at www.almc.ie. The 40-page programme is very keenly priced at €5 and contains maps of all the stages, an entry list, motorsport news and a number of features on the ALMC club’s activities.
