Birr & District Motor Clubs Rally is GO!
This Sunday 21st of Feb sees the return of the Birr & District Motor Clubs Tarmac stages rally to the Co Laois country side. Rally headquarters and main event sponsors the Abbeyleix Manor Hotel are back to support us for yet another year. We are also delighted to have the support of Laois Tourism again this year. We would like to take this opportunity to thank each and everyone of our sponsors as without your support and generosity events like this would not be possible.
This years rally will be a six stage event with two stages completed three times. These special stages have been carefully selected by clerk of the course Bill Ryan. Bill and his team have being working very hard over the past few months too get this rally up and running. The rally will be the opening round of the Top Part West Coast and Loughran Signs Midlands East rally championships. This year R.A.E motor factors in Roscrea have kindly sponsored an award for the quickest front wheel drive car to have their entry fee refunded.
The rally will begin on Saturday morning with crews and service teams from all over Ireland, and even Scotland and Wales descending on the town of Abbeyleix. The crews will sign on at the hotel and then make their way out to make the notes and familiarisation of the stages before they tackle them in their fully equip rally cars on Sunday morning.
Mechanical scrutiny of all rally cars will take place at Oliver Stanleys garage on the Cork rd Durrow from 2 to 6pm on Saturday. Upon passing this test the cars will then be parked up at the hotel in Abbeyleix overnight awaiting take off early Sunday morning.
On Sunday morning the cars will leave Abbeyleix and head to the Rathdowney Business & Venture Centre where service will take place throughout the day. Special Stage one Old town will begin at 10.27am and starts just outside the town. Upon completion of this stage the crews will head across to Harristown and tackle stage two at10.58am. This loop will be repeated four more times during the day. The crews are expected back at the hotel in Abbeyleix at four o clock Sunday evening where the winners will be crowned.
Last years winners Donagh Kelly and Kevin Flanagan are set to try and regain their title again this year in their trusted Ford Focus WRC. They are just one of over 100 entries received to date. Other entries include Niall Maguire, Kevin Barrett, Paddy Mc Veigh, and Kenny Mc Kinstry who will all drive Subaru Impreza WRCs. Some of the leading class fourteen entries include Ed Synan, Trevor Mulligan, David Condell, Gary Reidy and Simon Champman in his prestige Millington powered Proton. Some of the contenders for the top front wheel drive award include Keith Power, Kevin O Connor, Thomas Lynch and Joey Carroll .Both Joey and Thomas have club members Mark Kirwin and Frank Dwyer in the hot seat calling the notes and the lads will also be in with the chance of winning the John Finnegan memorial cup for the highest place club member in the overall results. Templemores Paul O Brien will also be a hot favorite for the top fwd award as he is ready to set the stages alight in his newly built Honda Civic.
The local contingent and club members set to tackle the stages at the weekend include, Davey Percy, William Cavanagh, David Forde, Brian Kirwin, John Fogarty, Albert Dalton, Sean Mc Evoy, and Father and son due Eddie and Joe Moffitt.

On Sunday evening last 31st of January the launch of the Abbeyleix Manor Hotel Stages rally took place. A small crowd had gathered at the Hotel on the Cork rd in Abbeyleix for the Launch of this year's rally which is less than three weeks away. There was a small display of rally cars on show and photographs were taken with sponsors, and the two different rally championship representatives and the organising committee.
Once again this year Bill Ryan has taken on the reins of Clerk of the Course and his hard working team of event organisers from the Birr & District Motor Club are putting the final touches to months of preparation. This will be the clubs sixth consecutive year in a row running their biggest event of the year out of the town of Abbeyleix. The club would like to extend a special thanks to the Abbeyleix Manor Hotel who are the main event sponsors, along with co sponsors Laois Tourism and also to all sponsors and programme advertiser as this event would not be possible without all your generosity and contribution. Events like this cannot be run without the help and support of so many people especially the residents, landowners and the local people along the rally route and we thank them for their patience and cooperation each year.
The rally takes place on Sunday 21st of February. It will be the opening round of the Top Part West Coast and Loughran Signs Midlands East rally championships. The closing date for entries is Wednesday the 11th of February and the club have an early entry incentive draw for all fully paid entries received on or before Monday Feb 8th to be entered into a draw for one lucky winner to have there entry fee fully refunded, the draw will be made on the morning of the rally at drivers briefing.
