Beamish/ Hayes Snowy Shakes!

The 2015 “1000 Shakes” Navigation Trial will not be forgotten for a while as Mother Nature over ruled the route that Greg and Joe Shinnors had set out. Based at the Community Hall in Freemount the route consisted of 41 time points, 5 vias and 4 controls. The 85 mile course was a winter wonderland as the roads were snow white and or sparkling with ice from tp1. An indication of how severe conditions was the fact that two of the top five crews (Ger O’Connell/ Denis O’Donovan & Colin Duffy/ Sam Johnston) were off the road and out of the event before tp5. A farmyard maze from tp4 to tp7 including 3 via’s saw every crew incur penalties. Almost every crew dropped time into tp4 but David Beamish/ Muireann Hayes remained clean until tp5 where they lost 3 mins. Both expert crews of Richard Cassidy/ Paul Phelan and Pakie Duffy/ Evin Hughes made an uncharacteristic wrong departure at tp5 which cost them dearly. Local pair Johnny Casey/ Patrick O’Sullivan overshot the lane for via3 and lost 25 mins as they got stuck in the snow trying to turn.

The route skirted Meelin (the highest village in Ireland) before heading into the lower side of the Mullaghareirk forest for the first “Plot & Bash”. Crews were constantly dropping time with the challenging conditions. Beamish/ Hayes led on 8 pens at tp15 (close to Rochchapel) with Owen Murphy/ Daire Hayes just on point in arrears. Novice crew Patrick Murphy/ Aaron O’Regan held third on 13 pens with Cassidy/ Phelan and Duffy/ Hughes tied for fourth on 25 pens. From tp17 the event returned to Mullaghareirk Forest, this time into the higher end where the snow was even deeper and more compact combined with more “Plot & Bash”. Every crew dropped time at tp19 and many were forced to skip time points between tp20 and tp26 to avoid going OTL. Top seeds Alan/ George Shinnors slipped off at a downhill square left into a snow bank. They eventually got out after 45 mins with the help of a friendly native who got his tractor! At C27 (Glenacarney Bridge West of Rockchapel) Beamish/ Hayes were on a total of 16 pens with Murphy/ Hayes second on 59 pens and Duffy/ Hughes held third on 69 pens.

The route headed south to “Glenawaddra” wood for a double loop through the forest including a water crossing. Most crews had to skip some of the 4 time points/ cut the loop. Interestingly only the semi expert crew of Dermot Whelton/ Mark McCarthy and Beginner crew of William Boxwell/ Kieran Hayes visited these 4 time points. Des Cooney/ Roy White put their Forester into a gulley and were OTL when they finally got towed out. All top four crews incurred 43 pens on their 3rd timecard (by virtue of skipping 2 tp’s & dropping 3 mins at tp106) leaving the leader board un changed ahead of the second SRS close to Newmarket.

Conditions improved towards the end as the route visited the Lismire hinterland for some interesting farm yards. However grip levels were deceptive as David Beamish and Owen Murphy discovered when they hit the same ditch on a square left approaching tp114 near Johnsbridge.

David Beamish/ Muireann Hayes claimed a decisive victory on 61 pens – an outstanding performance given the artic conditions. Owen Murphy/ Daire Hayes were best of the rest on 103 pens, with Pakie Duffy/ Evin Hughes completing the podium on 113 pens. Richard Cassidy/ Paul Phelan took 4th on 179 pens. Patrick Murphy/ Aaron O’Regan claimed 5th overall and won the Novice class. Dermot Whelton/ Mark McCarthy were 6th and best Semi Experts. Johnny Kenneally/ Ken Carmody were 7th and best CMC crew. Donegal/ Cork paring Trevor McConnell/ Eoghan McCarthy were 8th and 2nd Semi Expert. Alan/ George Shinnors were 9th while Daniel Cronin/ Shane Buckley were 10th overall and won the Beginner class on their first Night Nav. Daniel used his Corolla road car – some achievement and what a baptism of snow! There were 25 starters and 18 finishers, well done to everyone who competed.

It has to be said that the unsung hero’s of the night are the Marshals who braved the conditions and battled the snow covered roads to get to their time points. It’s a credit to these people that every time point was manned and every time point counted towards results – Thank you all. I want to say Thank You to Everybody behind the scenes who helped make this event happen and a special thank you to Joe for all the steering – we/ he drove the route 3 times in 24hours! Finally a sincere Thank You to the two Elaine’s for the catering – the soup hit the spot.
