Super Showdown for Sligo Pallets Border Rally Championship
Posted: October 9, 2014 8:57 PM
The 2014 Sligo Pallets Border Rally Championship is set for a nail-biting finish with the championship still wide open going into the final round in Donegal. 8 Drivers and 6 co-drivers can still win the overall prize! There are a number of permutations which could swing the championship one way or the other. With competitors able to drop their lowest score, the outcome of the championship may take some time to determine after the final results are issued!
Of the crews who can still win the championship, David Moffett/Fintan Sherry are in the most advantageous position. Maximum class points in Donegal would bring them to a total of 40 points which no other crew can surpass. After missing Mayo, the pair have taken three straight wins in class 11R and a 4th win in Donegal would wrap up the championship for them. Brian Armstrong/Mark Tierney are currently equal 1st overall on points after two wins and two thirds in the ultra competitive class 12. A maximum score in Donegal could take them up to 38 points total, but they would need Moffett/Sherry to not score more than 8 points to have a chance of claiming overall honours. Gene McDonald/Kevin Reilly can also reach the 38 point total with a class 9 win in Donegal. With 1 class win and 2 second place finishes so far the championship would fall their way if no other crew can make it to 38 points.
Brian Quigley/Seamus McTigue and Alan Lawson/Sean Harte can both reach a total of 37 points with class wins in Donegal. Quigley/McTigue have been been a model of consistency in class 2 all year with 1 win and three 2nd place finishes so far. Lawson/Harte have also been regular points scorers in class 11F to lead that class and hold a strong overall position going into Donegal. Martin Toner can also reach 37 points with a victory in class 12. Cathal Sheridan also stands a chance of making 37 points if he can secure a class 10 win in Donegal. Michael Carbin/Emmet McCooey (class 20) also have a slim chance of winning overall with a total of 36 points but require all the other crews to drop their Donegal score.
Amongst the classes, Brian Quigley/Seamus McTigue, Mark Ewing/John Egan, Eamon McCafferty, Roger Kennedy/Wendy Blackledge, Paddy McVeigh/Gary McElhinney, Gene McDonald/Kevin Reilly, Alan Lawson/Sean Harte, David Moffett/Fintan Sherry, Jack Maguire/Andy Hayes and Stefan McCann/Stephen McElroy have already secured class wins.
Pat Kirk/John McElhinney and Trevor Bustard/Kenny Bustard are battling it out for class 4 honours. Class 6 is a shoot-out between Eddie Peterson and Liam Branley. Class 10 sees Cathal Sheridan do battle with former champions John Kelly/Niall Kelly. Class 12 is a three horse race between Brian Armstrong/Mark Tierney, Martin Toner and Justin Smyth/Sharon Clarke. Gary Kiernan and Russell Woods can both win class 13, while Derek Bolton/Trevor O'Connell and Colin Flanagan/Patrick Brides are level on points in class 15. Michael Carbin/Emmet McCooey face off with David Leonard/Darragh Mullen for class 20. Finally Toyota Team Monaghan and Cross Border Team battle for success in the team category.
The concluding round of the championship takes place in Dowings in Donegal and is set to feature some classic stages from the Donegal International Rally. Stages such as Atlantic Drive, High Glen and Fanad Head are reveared by many and what better stages for the the 2014 Sligo Pallets Border Championship to be decided. Saturday October 11th is the date for the event which will see a new Border Rally Champion crowned.

Downings Bay Hotel, Donegal Harvest Rally – Press Release 3
Posted: October 7, 2014 2:20 PM
With just one week to go to the 2104 Downings Bay Hotel Harvest Stages Rally, the event will start on Saturday 11th, with a record breaking 200+ entrants for a one day rally.
The Donegal Motor Club have again exceeded all expectations in attracting an entry level reminiscent of rallies from the early 2000's.
As the round of the Dunlop Irish Tarmac Championship, valuable points still have to be decided, so the Downings based event will begin with a full field of 141 National entrants, 17 Juniors and a groups of Historic cars.
Clerk of the Course, Tony Boyle has organised 3 classic International level, special stages, repeated 3 times. Tony said, "For many, this will be an opportunity to drive stages, which are usually included on the final day of the Donegal International Rally, and therefore not attainable by many as they failed to last to the Sunday."
He said that, "We are overwhelmed by the response to the Harvest Rally. The entry reminds us of the levels from the 90's and 2000's when the reserve lists were 30/40 cars long. Our reserve is over 45 cars long, even the Juniors!"
Tony thanked the Downings Bay Hotel as the sponsor of the 2014 Harvest Rally. He also thanked his extensive team of organisers who have worked very hard over the summer and made this another great Donegal Motor Club rally.
The Clerk of Course gave timetable details of the week-end rally, beginning with Mechanical Scrutiny, at McNutts Factory, Derryhassin, Downings. This is necessary for all the competing cars and crew members, to have their personal and safety equipment on board their vehicles checked for mechanical safety, suitability and entry in the correct class of the competition.
As COC for this event, Tony thanked a number of local groups and individuals for their assistance in staging this rally. Those included the Downings Bay Hotel as Rally HQ, Donegal County Council for assistance with the roads used, Martin Magee of Cranford Stone, McNutts’s of Derryhassin, An Garda Síochána, GAA Downings, Sheame and Peter McBride Trailer Park, Dermot Walsh and Paddy Boyce, along with all the residents along the rally route.
The event has attracted an unbelievable list of over 200 cars including Juniors, Historics, and reserves. 141 cars may start the event, with Juniors and Historic cars, starting after the first set of stages.
