On show will be the familiar mixture of Group N, Modified and Historic Rally Cars, all exciting stuff and normally not found in such an environment. But the City father’s found favour and ‘just said yes!’ when they welcomed the Lark in the Park back again in 2014. Marshal Training - (Fri) 11 Apr 14

Posted: April 9, 2014 7:25 PM

River Ridge Recycling Lark in the Park motor rally, the Maiden City Motor Club based event planned for 26th April 2014, set in Ebrington Complex and St. Columb’s Park. Special this year is the addition of a road special stage called Clifford’s at An Grianan, Co. Donegal, with special permission from neighbouring Donegal Motor Club and MotorSport Ireland.

The planning for the event moves up a gear this week-end with the first of the activities for the Marshal’s Training based in St, Columb’s Park House, Waterside, set in the Park itself.

This will provide an opportunity for the many volunteers to partake of training for the rally week-end and get to learn about the type of event taking place and a tip-top series of lessons on how to deal with all the issues that may arise on the rally itself on and off the course, during the competition.

Marshals are a vital part of any motor rally, and there is no better way of learning about Motorsport up close and getting involved in the sport. Some would say its like being a linesman at a football match or a caddy at a golf tournament, with an up-close of all that is going on with a responsibility to keeping spectators in a happy and safe viewing environment.

Chief Marshal for the event, Jude O’Neill, said,
“I encourage everyone to come along and see what is involved, because there is something for everyone at this training. Even if you are not marshalling, there are other jobs to get involved in such as timekeeping, operating controls, helping with results, etc. We will turn nobody away, and it’s also an excellent way to get involved in an outdoor activity and meet new friends!

I wish to thank the North West Volunteer Centre for their excellent help for the 2013 event, and for their close co-operation with us this year as well. Many of the Volunteers came out last year with little or no experience in this type of event, but very quickly got involved and were a valuable asset to the event we were running and the many other events on in last year’s UK City of Culture. They were a credit to their city!”

Jude provided additional details of the training meeting in St. Columb’s Park House, Waterside, on Friday 11th April at 7.00pm. He may be contacted on the special marshal contact number of 07976266446 / +447976266446 or register on the Maiden City Motor Club’s website, where you can register using the Marshals Registration Form.

Deputy Mayor Gary Middleton hosted a press launch for the 2014 Maiden City Motor Club Lark in the Park in Ebrington Square.
Pictured are representatives of River Ridge Recycling, title sponsor of the event, ILEX, Alderman Maurice Devenney and officials from the motor club.

The Deputy Mayor of Derry, Councillor Gary Middleton, officially launched the RiverRidge Recycling ‘Lark in the Park’ at Ebrington Square, Derry/Londonderry today (Sat 15 Mar 14).

Organised by the Maiden City Motorclub (MCMC), the Lark in the Park, which will be held in St Columb’s Park on Saturday 26th April 2014, will give motorsport enthusiasts a chance to enjoy an action-packed day of rally cars in action and on display as well.

Event Director, Declan McCay, took the opportunity to also announce that RiverRidge Recycling will be the title sponsor for the Lark In The Park. Declan said,
“It is just fantastic news that RiverRidge Recycling has come on board for ‘Lark In The Park’. They have been the primary sponsor for Maiden City Motor Club for the past two years and have been a major influence in making the Dogleap and Turkey Run rallies the success that they have become. I am really looking forward to working with them on their first venture in Derry city."

Eamon Doherty, Financial Director of RiverRidge Recycling, said,
“The ‘Lark In The Park’ makes such good sense for our company as we are expanding our operation into the Derry/Londonderry area. Our partnership with MCMC has worked very well and we are pleased to be instrumental in making this event much bigger and better.

“We’ve also recently launched our own rally team so I’m hoping a few of us including Paddy McToal will be in the mix too when it comes to the racing. This is a super and very different event and I’d encourage any motorsport supporter to come along.”

RiverRidge Recycling, a local waste management company in the North West, has a long affiliation with motorsport and is an active member of the local community, delivering their ethos of commitment to the environment and community through practical activities and sponsoring events.

Declan McCay has also disclosed that there will be a massive increase in stage mileage for the 2014 event, with the addition of a Special Stage in Co.Donegal, after negotiations with Donegal Motor Club and MotorSport Ireland. Declan added,
“While we were delighted to get ‘Lark In The Park’ returned to the calendar in 2013 as part of City of Culture celebrations, it was always part of the plan to make it bigger and better.

“It was a great showcase rally last year but the organising team were very conscious that any rally confined solely to the park would always be very limited on stage mileage and that is not the best situation for competitors. I am delighted to be able to announce that in addition to the four stages in the Park, there will be an additional road stage close by in Donegal which will be run three times. This will give us a total stage mileage close to 25 miles.”

The organising team has been very busy in recent weeks and plans are well advanced.

“I’d encourage everyone to get your entry in as soon as possible so as not be disappointed. The closing date for entries is Friday 11th April 2014 with entry forms available shortly at www.maidencitymotorclub.com.

“The event is also open to the public so please come along and experience a right ‘Lark in the Park’ and all that motorsport has to offer – you’ll never have seen the like of it.”
