Newby Victorious At Jurby

Reigning Manx Rally champion Arron Newby got his title defence underway in emphatic style when he took victory in today's 4Hire Jurby Stages event at Jurby Motordrome which comprised the opening round of the 2014 Eurocars Motorsport Manx Rally Championship.
The Carnforth teenager and Kirk Michael co-driver Rob Fagg were in action in the Beatson's Building Supplies and VP Fuels/Pirelli-backed TEG Sport Subaru, but despite all his success on the Isle of Man last year, it was a new venue for the 19-year-old who missed the round last year when it was held in June.
With a top quality entry including the Mitsubishi Lancers of top seed Steve Colley and fellow Manxman Nigel Cannell as well as the likes of Paul McEvoy and another former Manx champion, Pat Bettridge, it wasn't going to be plain sailing over the 12 special stages.
However, apart from ex Trials ace Colley, the challenge failed to materialise and with dry conditions prevailing, a combination of Pirelli RX7 and RX9 tyres proved to be best suited to the Druidale Motor Club-organised event and despite a stall on the opening stage, Newby led all the way to the finish, winning ten of the 12 stages and claiming maximum points to get his season underway in brilliant style.
Arron Newby:
"This was my first time competing at Jurby and I found the rally to be one of the hardest I've had to concentrate on. After stalling at the start of SS1 and dropping 10 seconds, the pressure was on from the word go but Rob did a fantastic job guiding me round today so the win was a true team effort. Thanks as ever goes to the TEG Sport team and to our sponsors Pirelli, VP Race Fuels and our new sponsor, Beatson's Building Supplies. It's a fantastic way to get our title defence underway."
Stuart Newby, Team Owner:
"What we thought was going to be one of the easier events of the Manx Rally Championship turned out to be far more technical and demanding than we ever imagined. Hats off to Arron as he had his hands full with local hero Steve Colley but once again he proved he was not going to be beaten without a fight. It was close all day but he eventually edged in front to win by 28 seconds so we are delighted to get our season off to a fantastic start. Echoing Arron, thanks must go to the whole TEG Sport team as well as our loyal and valued sponsors whom we couldn't do this without."
