Barrable celebrates 12 months with Tunnock’s Fiesta R5 with a return to the Goodwood Festival of Speed

Robert Barrable will celebrate 12 months of rallying in his Tunnock’s World Rally Team Ford Fiesta R5 by returning to the place he made his debut in the car – the Goodwood Festival of Speed (26-29 June).

The Tunnock’s R5 has become an instantly recognisable car in the FIA World Rally Championship – where Robert and co-driver Stuart Loudon have finished in the WRC-2 top ten six times, including podium finishes in Spain, Monte Carlo and Portugal. They also finished 3rd overall on the Circuit of Ireland, a round of the FIA European Rally Championship.

The 26-year old driver from Swords, near Dublin, will once again drive his CA1 Sport-run Fiesta R5 on the 1.67 mile (2.69km) Goodwood Forest Rally Stage, with its chalk surface, jump and tight corners making it a spectacular sight for the near 200,000 visitors that are expected at this year’s event.

This will be the third successive year that Robert has run at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, having also driven a Fabia S2000 there for ŠKODA UK Motorsport in 2012.

This year’s Goodwood Forest Rally Stage promises to be the best ever, with an impressive entry covering three genre of rallying - The Birth of Stage Rallying for cars from the 1960s and ’70s, Legendary Group B Cars from the 1980s and the class that Robert will drive in - Giants of Modern Rallying.

Robert will be in very good company, as also making runs through the Goodwood Forest Rally Stage in the 70-strong field will be Sébastien Loeb (Citroën DS3 WRC) and Dani Sordo (Hyundai i20WRC).

The Rally Stage is very enjoyable to drive – it’s quite technical, you can get some big air on the jump and it’s great to put on a good show for the fans.

“This year I’m determined to take some time to have a good look around the Festival and explore the Formula 1 Paddock, watch some of the cars on the Hillclimb and drink in some of the amazing motorsport atmosphere. The Festival of Speed is unique, and one of the best events in the motorsport calendar.”

FINNISH LEGEND RAUNO AALTONEN TO DRIVE MINI IN ‘BIRTH OF STAGE RALLYING’ LINE-UP AT FESTIVAL OF SPEED

Rally icons Rauno Aaltonen and the Mini Cooper S head a stellar line-up of cars on the Goodwood Festival of Speed’s Skoda Forest Rally Stage on June 26-29 as the early days of stage rallying are celebrated.

The flying Finn, who famously won the 1967 Monte Carlo Rally in a Mini, will get behind the wheel of the ex-works car, in which he finished seventh on the 1964 Monte, on each day.

Aaltonen won the European Rally Championship in 1965 to follow-up a pair of domestic titles, and further fed his addiction to winning in circuit racing, taking victory at the 1966 Bathurst 500 in another Mini. He remains the only Finn to have won the gruelling event, which is now runs to 1000km as the centrepiece of the Australian V8 Supercars season.

He will be backed-up on the gravel rally stage by another Cooper S, owned by celebrity chef James Martin and formerly campaigned by Paddy Hopkirk. Joining the Minis in the ‘Birth of Stage Rallying’ celebration will be a selection of fast Fords with illustrious pasts. Not only will the very first Mk1 Escort RS1600 feature, but it will be joined by the car in which Roger Clark won the 1972 RAC Rally.

A pair of Mk2 RS1800s, campaigned by Ari Vatanen in period, will also join the fray. The car in which he captured the 1981 World Rally Championship will be joined by an earlier machine, taken to victory in the 1975 RAC Rally by Timo Makinen.

Fiat will be represented by examples of the two cars that achieved its 21 WRC wins, the 124 Abarth and 131 Abarth, while an ex-works Datsun 240Z and Opel Kadette GT/E will add more international variety to the entry list.

Cars campaigned by two British heroes of the era, Russell Brookes and Tony Pond, will also be present; a Sunbeam Lotus campaigned by two-time British Rally champion Brookes, and an ex-Pond Vauxhall Chevette completing the line-up.

DANI SORDO TO GIVE NEW HYUNDAI i20 WORLD RALLY CAR UK DEBUT AT GOODWOOD FESTIVAL OF SPEED

The Hyundai i20 World Rally Car will make its UK debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed on June 26-29 with Spanish star Dani Sordo behind the wheel.

This year’s Festival of Speed theme is ‘Addicted to Winning’ and The Korean manufacturer, which re-entered the World Rally Championship this year with the Hyundai i20 WRC, has already proved its credentials with a maiden podium finish on Rally Mexico – only the car’s third event.

Spanish driver Sordo, 31, whose addiction to winning was realised last year with a maiden WRC victory on Rallye Deutschland, has taken 36 World Championship podium finishes during his career and secured the Junior World Rally Championship title in 2005.

Sordo, a factory driver in the World Championship since 2006, will demonstrate the turbocharged Hyundai i20 WRC twice on Goodwood’s iconic 1.16-mile Hillclimb on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday of the Festival of Speed.

He will also take to the loose surface of the Forest Rally Stage – which will be run against the clock for the first time this year – for two runs on each day. Among his rivals during the Festival of Speed weekend will be former World Rally champions Sebastien Loeb and Bjorn Waldegard.

Following the Festival of Speed, the i20 WRC will not be seen in action in the UK until Britain’s round of the World Rally Championship, Rally GB, is held in November.

208 T16 Pikes Peak car will be driven by Sébastien Loeb in a quest to beat another hillclimb record

For visitors to the 2014 Goodwood Festival of Speed - the UK automotive event extravaganza - PEUGEOT has, driven by its brand signature ‘Motion & Emotion’, plans in place to yet again thrill the audience.

With a very modern, stylish and broad appeal range, PEUGEOT will be promoting its performance models at this year’s Festival of Speed. Static and dynamic displays will include concept cars, road cars and Motor Sport entries, but the largest head-tuning moment is most likely to be Sébastien Loeb reacquainting himself with a unique return drive and attempt on the famous Goodwood hillclimb in the awesome 875bhp / 875kg PEUGEOT 208 T16 Pikes Peak car – this time tuned for sea-level, not the 14,000ft altitude of the Colorado finish line.

Sébastien’s drive in the 208 T16 has been granted with the kind permission of Citroën Racing, who also has him driving one of its cars at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. The hillclimb is the Festival of Speed’s principal attraction and the fastest time up the 1.16-mile course is 41.6 seconds, set by Nick Heidfeld in the McLaren MP4-13 in 1999.

Details of the specific PEUGEOT entries and displays will be confirmed in due course, but what is in prospect is every bit as exciting as it was last year, representing the great involvement of product development with the expertise of PEUGEOT Sport in road and racing products.

Goodwood Festival of Speed hillclimb

Taking place throughout the weekend, this challenging white-knuckled course starts as a tree-lined run through the southern corner of the Goodwood Estate which then turns to sweep past the front of Goodwood House before climbing a steep and narrow Estate road bordered by flint walls and dense woodland groves towards Goodwood’s equine racecourse on top of the magnificent South Downs. The course rises over 300ft from the start line to the finish, and is very technical and challenging, putting the skills of the world’s very best drivers and riders to the ultimate test of concentration and speed.
