Preview: THE OAKWOOD ARMS HOTEL CLARE STAGES RALLY 2013

Posted: September 20, 2013 1:14 PM

This coming weekend's Oakwood Arms Hotel Clare Stages Rally is shaping up to be a superb event with the Clare Club reporting a full entry entry of a 131 cars including five world rally cars entered for this non championship round. Every five years each club who hosts a round of the Dunlop Championship has to drop out of the Championship for a year and it's Clare's turn this year.

The Clare Motor Club are delighted to welcome on board the Oakwood Arms Hotel as the main sponsor for the 2013 Clare Stages Rally. Its nearly thirty years since the club ran an a motorsport event in Shannon. After its formation in 1980 the very enthuastic motor club members organised a single stage in 1984 & 1985 in the shannon free zone area of the airport.

The rally is round 5 of the ever popular “The Top Part West Coast Rally Championship”

The organising team is offering competitors a friendly very compact event featuring two very competitive stages on good quality tarmac which will be repeated three times. Taking into account the current financial climate the Clare Club have reduced the entry fee to 395 euro for all competitors including Juniors and Historics.

Clare Driver Leads the West Coast Rally Championship
As we reach the penultimate round of this years championship its local Clare man Alan O’Callaghan (Subaru) from Kilmurry near Sixmilebridge who tops the points table in the drivers standings. O’Callaghan has put in a fine performance so far this season and will be aiming for a good haul of points this weekend ton his home rally to maintain his overall lead before the final round in Kerry in November. Hot on the heals of O’Callaghan is 2010 championship winner Shane Maguire. The Monaghan man is only 7 points behind O’Callaghan and already has a dropped score after a non finish on Round 2 and is in a very good position to lift his 2nd championship title. Making it a trio of Subaru’s holding the top 3 overall places is Galway’s Pat Kelly. Kelly lead the championship after round 2 but mechanical issues on round 3 in Limerick resulted in him scoring no championship points and dropping to 5th place. Like Maguire he can still move back into the top spot after dropped scores are taking into account after the final round. Leading the 2 wheel drive category and 4th overall is Limerick’ Frank Sweeney (Ford Escort MK11. The Limerick man was forced to retire on the last round and may not start this weekend as his car may not be ready in time. Tipperary’s Benny Kennedy (Ford Escort MK11) hold’s 5th spot having dropped 1 place after a non start in Galway. Moving up the leader board from outside the top 10 into 6th place is Maynooth’s Kevin Barrett. The Kerry native recently upgraded from a Subaru S11 WRC to a S14 model and scored maximum points in Galway as he get to grips with his new machine. Barrett missed the opening round in Birr, scored maximum points in Kerry and was a non starter in Limerick and will once again be aiming to score maximum points this weekend to keep his championship hopes alive. Former double champion Ed Synan (Ford Escort MK11) missed the opening round this year and was forced to retire on round 2 but a good haul of points on the last 2 rounds see the Limerick man move into 7th place. A trio of Ford Escort MK11’s hold the final 3 places in the top 10, Tipperary’s Eoin Wood’s hold’s 8th place, Galway’s Eamon Dervan 9th and Kerry’s Jason Costello takes the final place in the top 10.

Top 10 Co-Drivers Standings
Having scored maximum points on the opening 4 rounds of the championship Limerick’s Sean Mullally tops the co-drivers table and in doing so has won the 2013 Top Part West Coast Rally Championship co- drivers title. Sean has been on pace note duties for 3 different drivers this year starting off on round 1 with Welsh ace Melvyn Evans, rounds 2 and 4 with his regular driver Kevin Barrett and guiding West Cork’s Kevin Kelleher to overall victory on round 3. This is Sean’s 1st overall West Coast title and has been a fantastic supporter of the championship over the years. Tipperary’s Cathal McGrath (Alan O’Callaghan) holds 2nd place just 10 points clear of Galway’s Jonathan Kelly in 3rd spot. Moving up the leader board to 4th place is Co. Fermanagh’s Martin McGarrity as Clare’s Jane Coogan drops to 5th after a non finish in Galway. Tipperary’s Dorothy Cavanagh drops 1 place to 6th followed in 7th place by Limerick’s Gary Carroll. The final 3 place’s in the top 10 co drivers standings are held by West Cork’s Nicole O’Shea in 8th, Tipperary’s Olivia Coen 9th and Kerry’s Denis O’Connell in 10th.

Top 3 Junior Championship Standings
Kerry’s Darren Young (Honda Civic) holds a 17 point advantage over last years champion Galway’s Damian Boyle (Honda Civic). Boyle has taken 3 maximum points scores already this season and having missed round 2 in Kerry the Galway man now has taken one of his dropped scores and all will be to play for here this weekend. Young took advantage of Boyle’s absence in Kerry and took the maximum points on offer but if you take his worst score of 18 points off his overall tally its Boyle who holds a 2 point advantage in the overall standings. Limerick’s Andrew Ryan (Honda Civic) holds 3rd place and is still in the hunt for overall honours if his two rivals were not to score points on the remaining rounds. In the co-driver standings Kerry’s Sean Walsh who had lead the series entering round 4 in Galway has now dropped to 2nd place after work commitments forced him to miss the Ballinasloe based event. Moving up into top spot in the points table is last years Junior championship winning co driver Joseph Boyle. The Galway man put in another fine performance guiding Damien Boyle to another maximum points haul and will be aiming to score back to back titles in the championship. West Cork’s Tommy Hayes holds 3rd place and with only 5 points separating the top 3 co-drivers Hayes is still very much in contention to overhaul his rivals and take his 1st overall championship title.
Top 3 Historic Championship Standings

Pj O’Dowd and co-driver John Young (Talbot Sunbeam) hold a very slender lead in this years championship by just 2 points from Co Louth’s Philip McKibbin and his Tralee co-driver Padraig Brick (Ford Escort MK11). The crews have been having a great battle so far this year with the Louth/Kerry pairing who switched from a Ford Cortina to the more powerful Escort earlier in the season scoring maximum points in Galway to close the gap on their rivals. O’Dowd has scored top points on the opening 3 rounds and lost out on four in a row when brake failure put him off the road in Galway losing valuable time. A brave effort over the remaining stages saw him fight his way back and take 2nd placed points to maintain his lead.

The final round of the championship will be the Banna Beach Resort Kerry Mini Stages Rally which will take place on 10th November.

The Club have recieved a full entry of 130 cars for this even popular event and boasts five World Rally Cars in the top ten headed by previous winners and long time supporters of the Clare Stages Rally Monaghan's Niall Maguire / Enda Sherry in their Subaru Impreza WRC S11. After sliding off the road in the recent Galway Summer Rally the car has been fully repaired and is ready to go. The top twenty entries are as follows -
Ruane’s, Anthony O’Halloran, will be co-driven by fellow local, Charlie McEnery, The local crew have not competed together since last years Clare Stages where they finished ninth overall, third in group N and top Clare Crew in their Mitsubishi Evo1X.
