HUNTER/MARCHBANK UNCATCHABLE IN BALLINASLOE - Report courtesy of Dunlop – proud sponsors of the Irish National Rally Championship

Posted: January 29, 2014 12:41 PM

WELSH driver, Hugh Hunter and co-driver, Andy Marchbank (Subaru WRC) took an impressive victory in the Ballinasloe based Carlton Shearwater Galway Summer Rally, the penultimate round of the Dunlop National Rally Championship.
They finished the nine stage rally with a winning margin of a minute and 11.5 seconds over the Subaru WRC of their Welsh rivals, James Belton/Mark Glennerster. Daragh O’Riordan/Tony McDaid (Ford Fiesta WRC) were third – eleven seconds further behind.

The Motorsport Safety Group N award within the Dunlop series was won by Monaghan’s, Josh Moffett/John Rowan. The Dunlop Mk. 2 Champions Trophy was also won in Ballinasloe with Cavan’s, Jonathan Pringle/Martin Byrne scooping the accolade, in addition, they were also the recipients of the Dunlop “Drive of the Day” award.

The Dunlop Junior Championship was also decided in Ballinasloe with Kerry’s, Robert Duggan/Mikie Galvin (Honda Civic) clinching the series.

On the opening stage near Aughrim, Hunter, despite an issue with the launch control, still set the fastest time, finishing 9.5 seconds in front of the Subaru WRC of James Belton with Roy White (MG S2000) a further 3.1 seconds behind in third. Cork’s, Daragh O’Riordan in his Ford Fiesta WRC was fourth – 18.1 seconds off the leading pace. Declan Gallagher (Toyota Starlet) was a superb fifth with Josh Moffett sixth and leading Group N.

Hunter was quickest through the second stage where Belton was only a fraction of a second behind. In overall terms, Hunter led by ten seconds. The Welshman driver also topped the time sheets for the third stage and arrived at the Ballinasloe service park with a lead of 16.1 seconds over his fellow countryman, Belton, who was concerned about the power output of his Subaru that also wasn’t engaging first gear. O’Riordan was a further 18.2 seconds behind in third and opined that he wasn’t really in the groove.

Donegal’s, Declan Gallagher powered his Toyota Starlet into fourth place 6.6 seconds ahead of the Escort of Jonathan Pringle with late entry, Frank Kelly, also in an Escort, holding sixth overall albeit concerned about a warped brake disc, however, he decided against inserting a replacement. Seventh placed Josh Moffett (Mitsubishi) led the Group N category while Kevin Barrett (Subaru WRC) and the Escort pair of Ed O’Callaghan and Jim McKenna completed the top ten.

Opening loop retirements included Roy White, who was occupying third overall when the studs from the front right wheel sheared off on the third stage. James Stafford retired when his Darrian lapsed on to three cylinders.

On the repeat of the loop of three stages, Hunter emphasised his superiority and pushed his lead out to a minute and six seconds with O’Riordan moving into second. Gallagher had an untroubled run and slotted into third ahead of Belton, who traversed the stages without the anti-lag.

A hard trying Pringle was fifth followed by Kelly. Changes to the suspension were of immediate benefit to Kevin Barrett (Subaru WRC), who slotted into seventh. Moffett continued to dominate Group N, his rival, Stephen Wright (Mitsubishi) was one place and 25.9 seconds behind, the latter selected a harder compound tyre and his times improved accordingly. Richard Moffett (Toyota Starlet) on his first rally in some three months, completed the top ten.

On the final three stages, Hunter cruised to victory with a determined Belton taking the runner up spot and the maximum 20 Dunlop points to consolidate his bid to finish runner-up in the Dunlop series. O’Riordan was third.

Meanwhile, Gallagher took more valuable points to edge ahead in the rally.ie category of the Dunlop series while Pringle secured the Dunlop Mk. 2 Champions Trophy.

The Historic category was won by the Millstreet father and son pairing of John and Sean Moynihan (Escort), who finished over three and a half minutes ahead of the opposition.

Kerry’s, Robert Duggan/Mikie Galvin (Honda Civic) clinched the Dunlop Junior Championship, their rivals, Donegal’s, Kevin Eves/Adrian Reynolds bowed out on the opening loop.
