Barrable debuts Ford Fiesta R5 at Goodwood Festival
Posted: July 16, 2013 8:45 AM
Robert Barrable gave his brand new Ford Fiesta R5 its first ever run at last weekend’s Goodwood Festival of Speed, debuting the car in its striking Tunnock’s World Rally Team colours.
The 23-year old Irishman’s Fiesta R5 is one of the first to be released by M-Sport, and will be maintained and run on events by Carlisle-based rally preparation experts CA1 Sport.
Robert did several high-speed demonstrations runs in the new car over the twisty and technical two-mile Goodwood Forest Rally Stage, kicking up the chalk dust and entertaining the huge crowds over the three-day event. For his efforts, Robert won Friday’s Driver of the Day Award.
Goodwood provided Robert with a good opportunity to drive the car for the first time on gravel. More serious set-up testing is needed and, together with co-driver Stuart Loudon, Robert will drive the car again at a forthcoming private test session in Estonia, prior to making his FIA World Rally Championship debut in the car on Rally Finland (1-3 August).
The famous Jyväskylä-based event will be Robert’s second WRC outing of the season, after he finished 2nd in WRC-2 on Rally Portugal, driving a Tunnock’s sponsored Fiesta S2000.
Robert: “Goodwood has been the perfect event to debut our new car and preview the Tunnock’s World Rally Team ahead of our official team launch in Scotland next week. The Goodwood Rally Stage is great. It’s not massively fast, plus it’s quite narrow with no room for error, but we’ve done enough miles at Goodwood to settle into the car. The Fiesta R5 is very comfortable to drive; it suits my driving style and it’s a car I think I will very quickly adapt well to. I’m certainly looking forward to the test in Estonia, on fast and flowing roads more akin to what we’ll find on Rally Finland. The R5 is totally different to drive than a Super 2000 – the chassis, engine and distribution of power are all very different. It really is lovely to drive.”
Stuart: “The Fiesta R5 is a lot quieter inside than a Super 2000 and it doesn’t feel as dramatic – even though you’re actually going faster. It’s a fantastic car. The change of direction it has is awesome. It’s a lovely car to sit in and everything has been well designed, so you don’t have to stretch for anything and there is nothing in the cockpit that you don’t need. I wasn’t reading pace notes at Goodwood, so it was a rare opportunity for me to watch Robert at work inside the car. It’s been fascinating to watch his hands and feet as he controls the car through the corners, and I’ve been looking at him more than I’ve been looking out of the window.”

GOODWOOD CONFIRMS REVISED DATES FOR THE 2013 FESTIVAL OF SPEED
Posted: December 18, 2012 3:40 PM
Following the recent unexpected change to the 2013 Formula 1 calendar, it has been necessary to change the published dates of the Goodwood Festival of Speed to avoid a clash with the revised German Grand Prix – and to ensure that the Festival can continue to host current F1 teams and drivers in 2013.
Current Formula 1 content has played an integral part in the Festival over the last twenty years, and will continue to do so in 2013 as part of Goodwood’s 20th anniversary Festival celebrations.
Subject to any further amendments to the Grand Prix calendar, the 2013 Festival of Speed will now take place on 12-14 July, with the Moving Motor Show being held on Thursday 11 July.
All 2013 Festival of Speed tickets already purchased will remain valid for the new dates.
