Welsh Rally - 29 Apr 12

Event Cancelled - Press Release

Posted: April 27, 2012 11:45 AM

"Following our organising team meeting last night, we have regretfully taken the decision to cancel the RDP Welsh Rally, which was due to run on 6th May 2012.

Despite our best efforts to encourage competitors to get their entries in by today to ensure that the event ran as scheduled, we had only received 37 paid-up entries. We made the decision, and publicised it on the Forum, that we would run it, providing we received 50 entries by the time of the meeting last night, even though we would make a financial loss by doing so. The projected loss of running with such a low entry is something that we cannot consider as it would be too high a drain on the Clubs finances. Despite assurances, from some Competitors, that their entry would be with us by today, they haven’t appeared which doesn’t give us the confidence to delay the cancellation any longer. All entries received, will get a full refund of their money in the next few days.

We realise that we will be criticised by some people for not waiting a bit longer before making the decision to cancel, but the reality is that there are so many things to consider, such as print lead times for the documentation and stickers, cancellations of accommodation for competitors to ensure that they get their money back, informing the MOD, Caterers, Radio Controllers, Doctor, Rescue and Recovery units, Radio Car Teams, Marshals, Police, MSA, RLO, Scrutineers, Results Team, Timekeeper, MSA Steward, Championship Secretaries, Patterson Route Notes, WAMC and, of course our Sponsor Robert Davies, of RDP Commercial Lawyers, who has supported us for many years.

We would like to thank all of the people that have supported the event since we resurrected it, including former Sponsors, Mark Williams (R&M Williams) and Matador Tyres (Graham Middleton), our current Sponsor RDP Commercial Lawyers and, of course, the Competitors themselves. We should also acknowledge the vital support that Peter Davies and Ed Mahoney (MOD) and Gordon Anderson (Landmarc) have given us and every other event on Epynt.

The disappointment that will be felt by some Competitors, Marshals and Spectators will be nothing compared to the anguish that the organising team feels, following many months of planning and getting everything in place to provide a good event, despite some very difficult obstacles, many of which will probably never be revealed. Sadly, this event will now be consigned to the history books, as they say, and will not be resurrected until such time as we are comfortable that we will get sufficient entries to make it viable or until we find an alternative format to run."
