Sligo Pallets Border Rally Championship 2012 Round 2 Preview

The 2012 Sligo Pallets Border Rally Championship got into full swing with the Mayo Stages Rally playing host to Round 1 of this popular clubman's series. The Championship's competitiveness was clearly evident with over 150 competitors registering for the Championship. At Driver's Briefing, the details for the Border 'Drive of the Day Award' was announced with the fastest class 13 crew on Stage 4, providing they finish the rally, receiving the award.

Conditions on the opening loop proved treacherous. Surfaces remained greasy despite the dry weather. Conditions improved over the next two loops, although their remained significant slippy sections to catch out the unwary.

Class 2-4:
Reigning Class 2 Champion, Adrian Cannon with new navigator Paddy McCrudden set the pace from the word go and held off the challenge of Pauric McGee/Fergal Loughney to take class honours. Dara Leonard/Matthew McKenna took victory in class 3 from Pakie Duffy/Colin Duffy by a comfortable margin. In Class 4, Donagh Kelly/Kevin Flanagan set a scintillating pace to claim the class and 3rd overall. Trevor Bustard/Kenny Bustard took 2nd place in class but could do little to match Kelly/Flanagan.

Class 6-8:
Joe McGonigle/Ciaran Geaney finished top of the pile in Class 6 in their Citroen C2R2 after a fine drive. Peter Barrable/Paddy Robinson finished 2nd in their similar car, just over a minute in arrears. Roger Kennedy/Wendy Blackledge were the sole finishers in class 7. As expected the overall winners of the event came from class 8. After a big battle with Kevin Barrett/Sean Mullally, it was former Border Champion Niall Maguire & Enda Sherry who took a 9 second win over Barrett/Mullally. Seamus Leonard/John McCafferty had been the fastest crew over the stages but a road penalty demoted them to 3rd in class.

Class 9-11:
Donegal's Barry McGill/Derek Heena took a handsome win in class 9. They were followed home by Justin Smyth/Gregory McQuillan in their similar Escort. Michael Carbin/Evin Hughes came out on top in class 10 ahead of the similar car of Martin Ewing/James Ewing. Anthony Hand/Emmet Sherry flew to victory in class 11 and fine 12th overall. Ryan Loughren/James McCarville set some impressive times during the day to take the runners-up spot in class 11.

Class 12-15:
Arthur & Mac Kierans got their defence of the title off to the perfect start with another convincing class 12 win. Locals Colin & Michael Loughney were almost three minutes in arrears by the finish to take 2nd. The battle for class 13 was eventually won by Jonathan Pringle/Martin Byrne following the retirement of Declan Gallagher/Ryan Moore. Adding to their joy, was that they also won the Border 'Drive of the Day' for their fastest class 13 time on stage 4. Columba Heena/Leonard Craig finished just 32 seconds adrift in 2nd. Class 14 was won by Camillus Bradley/Crawford Henderson in their Mk2 Escort. They were also the top 2 wheel drive finishers. Paul Barrett/Peter Ward returned to the stage to claim 2nd place. Roy White/James O'Brien took class 15 and 4th overall in their MG after a fine drive.
