The start of the Killarney Historic stages rally is fast approaching and the organizers the Killarney and district motor club are very pleased with the 100 plus entries they have received to date. Clerk of the course Kevin Flannery said
“the stages are looking great and everyone is rearing to go after the long year waiting for the event to start. It has been a big effort from all members of the club to get this event to the start line. I am very pleased to be welcoming representatives from the FIA European Historic Stages Championship who are coming to the Kingdom of Kerry to observe the event and if all goes well the Killarney Historic stages rally will be included into the 2012 Championship”.

The FIA European Historic Stages Championship takes place in eight different countries throughout Europe. Kevin is very pleased to have such strong overseas entries, such as Tony Davies, Gareth Lloyd , Philip Wylie, and John Spiers who will make the long journey to Killarney, but the driver and car most rally fans will want to see is the ex-Works Andrews Heat for Hire Talbot Sunbeam driven by Mal Stuart. This was the car that was made famous by Russell Brookes when he drove for the Andrews Heat for Hire team in the 1980-81 British Rally Championship. John Leahy a London based Waterford man bought the Sunbeam from the works team in 1982. The Sunbeam was driven in the 82 Ulster International and the 83 Donegal International Rally by Mal Stuart. The event starts from the Brehon Hotel before the crew’s head to the first stage Molls Gap at 08:30.

The Brehon Hotel Killarney Historic Stages Rally

Posted: November 22, 2011 11:03 PM

The 3rd of Dec is fast approaching for the start of the 2011 Killarney Historic Stages Rally. This year The Rally has returned to Killarney town for it's base and the Clerk of the course has chosen a fantastic route with classic stages such as Molls Gap, Ballaghabaema, Carragh Lake and Gortnagane being used in this year's event. Of course the highlight for competitors and spectators will be the final stage of the day which will be run in total darkness.

The service area for this year’s rally is situated in the main car park of The Gleneagle Hotel and with some fantastic accommodation deals in The Brehon Hotel, The Gleneagle Hotel and The Riverside Apartments this year we have turned the Hotel grounds into our own rally campus. The Rally is also supported by Sapphire Signs in Rathmore the one stop shop for all your signage and graphics needs. Southern Power Services, O’Neill Garden Equipment Milltown and Initial Rentokil are also showing their support by becoming stage sponsors. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our sponsors for their continued support and we would also ask you as rally fans to support those who support rallying because without them we could not run events of this level.

This year The Killarney Historic Stages Rally will be the first round of The Tarmac Historic Rally Championship for 2012 and is also the final round of The Windscreen Companies Southern Four Historic Rally Championship.

Entries for this year’s Rally are coming in at a steady pace, Historic driver Ray Cunningham will be making the journey to Killarney to try to regain his title,Mervyn Johnson will also be making the trip.

In the post Historic section Killarney motor club’s own Mark Falvey will be very hard to beat on his home stages, keeping a close eye on him will be Wicklow’s Brian Lawlor. With Tony Rees also making the trip from The UK and with current Irish National Forestry Champion Owen Murphy also entered Mark will have his work cut out.

Garrett Lloyd will be making the long trip to Killarney as will Thomas Davies to compete in the Classic Section of the rally, Diarmuid Lynch the current classic section champion will be up for retaining his crown and Todd Falvey on home soil will be very hard to beat in his Porche 911. Also making the trip from The UK is Howell Davies and Alan Courtney from County Armagh in his Porche 928. There is no doubt but the battle for overall honours in this section will very interesting to see who will come out on top. The newly crowned Irish National champion Wesley Patterson has also entered along with John O’ Donnell, Martin McGee and Kevin O Donoghue. These are just some of the entries received so far for the Modified section of the rally. The modified section has also been extended to allow Opel/Vauxhall Manta’s, Ascona’s, and Chevettes to compete in this year’s event.

Entries will remain open until closer to the Rally to accommodate any late comers.

A new class for Historic cars that wish to run on racing tyres has been Introduced, these competitors will be up for class awards only, but will not be in the running for overall honors. For more information on progress of the event log on to the clubs website or follow on facebook .

Posted: October 19, 2011 11:01 AM

Regulations for the 2011 Killarney and District Motor club Historic Rally are now available on the clubs website.

For this years event Killarney and District motor club, have put together a challenging route of eight classic stages (four stages ran twice) and the last stage of the day will be run in total darkness, this will make for an exciting end to what promises to be a fantastic days rallying for both competitor and spectator.

This years event has returned to the town of Killarney with centralized service area and Rally HQ at The Brehon Hotel which is situated on the gateway to the most famous stage in Ireland, Molls Gap.

Killarney and District Motor club have an Easy Payment Plan in place in which competitors can pay their entry fee in three payments over the coming weeks.

As everyone understands, organizing of events of this magnitude takes a lot of commitment, money and could not be put together without the financial backing and generosity of our sponsors. In showing their loyalty once again to The Killarney Motor club as they have done for so many years, The Brehon Hotel are the main sponsors of the Histroic Rally.

The Hotel have also put on a special rates for the Rally weekend and information on these can be found on the club website

For overseas competitors the club also have in place a ferry deal with Fairfield Motorsport, details of which are available on Fairfield Motorsport.
More Details also on the club website.

Also a first for the Killarney Historic Rally is the running of The Rally solely on Saturday, which gives the Crews and Spectators plenty of time to get back home for work on Monday morning, but more importantly it gives everyone the opportunity to relax on Saturday evening and chat about the days rallying and enjoy prize giving and The End of Year Rally Party.

Killarney Historic Stages Rally returns to Home Town

Posted: August 11, 2011 2:09 PM

Killarney and District Motor Club have announced details of their Historic Stages Rally which will take place over the weekend of December 3rd and 4th 2011 After a number of years based in Kenmare the rally returns to Killarney, with Headquarters for the first time in the event’s history in The Brehon Hotel, Muckross Road.

Commenting on the change of base Clerk of the Course, Kevin Flannery, said that the choice was largely dictated by the harsh economic realities facing rallying at the moment.
“We were quite happy in Kenmare” he said “and the people we dealt with were more than helpful, but the over riding factor was that I had to plan a rally which would have to operate within a very tight budget”.
“I simply could not afford to take a chance on getting an entry of over a hundred cars and therefore there had to be a financial package available which would enable the event to clear its costs even if only eighty cars start the rally”

Despite this very necessary caution the organisers are hopeful that this popular end of year event will still have the support of a big number of historic, post historic and classic crews.

The Club has applied to Motorsport Ireland for permission to run the event on Saturday rather than the traditional Sunday format as a poll of competitors indicates that crews, particularly those with long distances to travel, would prefer to do recce on the previous Saturday or Sunday, scrutiny of Friday evening, rally on Saturday, travel home on Sunday and be back at work on Monday.

As one competitor put it
“ those who can afford to go rallying at present are those who still have jobs and whatever about taking a few hours off on Friday afternoon they need to be back at work on Monday morning”.

Club Chairman Diarmuid Cronin recently travelled to the Ypres Rally in Belgium and met with officials from the European Historic Rally Championship with a view to having the event included in the European Championship within the next few years.

It is hoped that observers from the EHRC will travel to Killarney to evaluate this years rally.

Final details of the route have yet to be confirmed but it is likely that the classic stages such as Molls Gap, Beallaghbeama and Caragh Lake will feature.
Service will be centralised in Killarney to reduce costs for competitors and road mileage will also be kept to a minimum.

Very competitive accommodation packages have been laid on by the Brehon and by its sister hotel the Gleneagle.

Regulations / Entries will open - in mid September.
