PEREZ/SPOONER CLAIM HOLLOW DUKERIES VICTORY...

Kick Energy rally driver Steve Perez scored a decisive victory in today's Rainworth Skoda Dukeries Rally held in Sherwood Forest and as a result has moved to the head of the Silverstone Tyres BTRDA Rally Championship table.
Perez, from Chesterfield, and Welsh co-driver Paul Spooner, were competing on the fifth round of series in their ex-Marcus Gronholm Ford Focus WRC and the pair tied the first stage with championship rivals Andy Burton and Robin Kellard in the Peugeot Cosworth. Then, despite a spin in stage two, Perez was able to keep Burton in his sights for the next stage.
On stage four Burton retired with engine problems leaving the way clear for Perez to claim his third victory on this event equalling the record held by Roger Clark.
However, at the finish, news filtered through of a tragic accident on stage seven which claimed the life of a young driver.
"This is a very hollow victory for me with the news that Martyn Lewis lost his life competing in a sport we all love. Myself and Paul would like to extend our heartfelt sympathies to the family and friends of Martyn in this difficult time," said Steve.
The next round of the series takes place on July 10th with the Quinton Stages Rally.
