EVANS/WALSH WIN CIRCUIT OF MUNSTER - Report courtesy of Dunlop - Proud sponsors of the National Rally Championship

Posted: June 7, 2010 2:33 PM

The Welsh crew of Mel Evans/Patrick Walsh (Subaru WRC) won the Adare based Circuit of Munster Rally, the sixth round of the Dunlop National Rally Championship. They finished with a 20 second winning margin over Niall Maguire/Enda Sherry (Subaru WRC). Kevin Barrett/Sean Mullally (Subaru WRC) were a further 30 seconds behind in third. Maguire retains his lead of the series.
The Group N category was won by Eamonn Daly/Brian Doherty (Mitsubishi) while Ed Synan/Denis O'Connell (Escort) won the Modified category.

On the opening stage, Kevin Barrett and Mel Evans shared the lead when they set identical times, the latter remarked that he was extremely lucky not to have punctured after his Subaru clipped a stone. Daragh O'Riordan (Subaru) occupied third - three seconds behind the leading duo and a second ahead of Dunlop National Rally Championship leader, Niall Maguire. Derek McGarrity (Subaru) was fifth, he lost some confidence after his Subaru clipped a stone. Eamonn Daly (Mitsubishi) led Group N. Mike Quinn (Escort) suffered some brake troubles; Anthony O'Halloran (Mitsubishi) punctured while Sean Flanagan (Subaru) lost over three minutes when he had to stop and change a punctured wheel.
Maguire set the pace on the second stage and moved into a three second lead over Evans even though the Monaghan man remarked that the level of grip varied through the stage.

Evans set a scintillating pace through the third test and was rewarded with the lead as he moved eleven seconds ahead of Maguire, Kevin Barrett was third with McGarrity and O'Riordan completing the top five.
In Group N, Eamonn Daly (Mitsubishi) had an untroubled run, he was sixth in general classification. Elsewhere, James Murphy (Escort WRC), Ed Synan (Escort), Mark Sheahan (Citroen) and Paul Purtill completed the top ten. Meanwhile, Mike Quinn and Declan Boyle, in Ford Escorts, crashed out within a short distance of each other on S.S. 3.
Out on stages four and five, Evans set the fastest time and arrived at the Kilmallock service halt with a 19 second lead over Maguire while Barrett was a further eight seconds behind in third. Leader Evans remarked, "I seem to have my pace back, it's all out attack for stage six." Second placed Maguire reckoned there was little he could do, his Subaru lacked the power of the S12B's of Evans and McGarrity. McGarrity endured half a spin on Stage 4 and a puncture on Stage 5, he remarked that anytime he pushed, something occurred to negate his efforts. Third placed Barrett lost about six seconds when he caught up with McGarrity's punctured Subaru towards the end of the stage. O'Riordan, who was fourth, spun on Stage 5.

Sixth placed Eamonn Daly (Mitsubishi) overshot a junction on S.S. 5, James Murphy recovered from stalling his Escort WRC on the opening stage and damaging a wheel on the second test to hold seventh in a top ten that also featured Ed Synan (Escort), Mark Sheahan (Citroen C2R2) and Paul Purtill (Escort).
Evans gained a further seven seconds on Maguire through the sixth stage and eased off on the final pair of stages to take victory, his third of the current Dunlop campaign. Maguire in second, still leads the series - eight points ahead of Evans. Barrett, who was fastest through the penultimate test, took third place ahead of O'Riordan and McGarrity.
Even though the cockpit of his Mitsubishi displayed a problem with the differentials, Eamonn Daly took victory in the showroom category. James Murphy (Escort WRC) was seventh; Ed Synan (Escort) won the Modified category and the top ten was rounded off by Paul Purtill (Escort) and Anthony O'Halloran (Mitsubishi). Mark Sheahan (Citroen) was a late retirement.
The Dunlop "Driver of the Day" award was won by Monaghan's, Shane Maguire (Subaru), he overcame a slight indiscretion on the second stage to finish eleventh overall and third in Group N.

MUNSTER BECKONS FOR DUNLOP CONTENDERS - Preview courtesy of Dunlop - Proud sponsors of the National Rally Championship

Posted: June 4, 2010 1:08 PM

The Dunlop National Rally Championship continues at pace on Sunday next with the Circuit of Munster Rally, the sixth round of the series that will complete back to back events. Series leader, Niall Maguire (Subaru), who picked up second placed points in Cavan after edging out Mel Evans on a tie-break, heads the entry. The Monaghan native, who has scored in the five rounds thus far, won this event last season and a repeat victory would strengthen his Dunlop bid.

One of his principal rivals, Derek McGarrity moved closer to the Monaghan driver after he annexed top points in Cavan last week, the Glengormley driver seems to have settled to the popular one day format of the Dunlop series.

Kevin Barrett, who never made it to the opening stage in Cavan, considered opting out of the series as he has three non-finishes, however, the Maynooth man has decided, principally due to the fact that the Circuit of Munster is his co-driver, Sean Mullally's home event, that he will make the journey south.

Welsh ace, Mel Evans (Subaru) wil also be making the journey and continue with his title bid, no doubt, he will be keen to take his third win of the season and close the gap to title rivals, Maguire and McGarrity.

Cork driver, Daragh O'Riordan, who switched to a Subaru WRC last March, is seeded behind the Dunlop quartet and having made quite an impression in rounds of the Irish Tarmac Championship, it will be interesting to see how he performs in the eight stage event.

Reigning Patterson's RallyNews Group N champion, Kevin Kelleher makes a return to the series in his Mitsubishi and will endeavour to stay close to the WRC competitors. Gary Jennings (Mitsubishi), who won the Group N category in Cavan, has submitted a late entry.

Current rally.ie award champion, Mike Quinn (Ford Escort) is the top entry in the Modified category and he will face opposition from the likes of Declan Boyle, who finished sixth overall in Cavan. Local hero, Eamonn Daly (Mitsubishi) completes the top ten and having finished third overall in last season's Circuit of Munster, he has a difficult task in repeating the feat.

Further local interest is provided by Ford Escort duo, Paul Purtill and Ed Synan, James Murphy (Ford Escort WRC) who won the Limerick Mini Stage Rally at the end of last season, Sean Moran (Toyota Corolla), Peter Cummins (Darrian T90), Aidan Walsh (Ford Escort), John Danaher (BMW), Tony Murphy (Ford Escort) and Ken Lyons (Ford Escort).

Elsewhere, Anthony O'Halloran (Mitsubishi), Tadhg Linehan (Subaru WRC), Aidan Bourke (Mitsubishi), Barry Ryan (Ford Escort), Pat Kelly (Subaru), Mark Sheahan (Citroen C2R2), John McQuaid (Ford Escort), Charlie Hickey (Ford Escort) and Joe Connolly (Ford Escort) are also competing.
