RALLYDAY MARKS TENTH ANNIVERSARY WITH 'MONSTER' LINE-UP
Posted: September 24, 2010 12:19 PM
Jari-Matti Latvala, Stig Blomqvist, Guy Wilks, Russell Brookes and Gwyndaf Evans headed a star-studded list, as Rallyday's annual extravaganza celebrates another successful year.
Rallyday reached a milestone on Saturday 18 September and organisers can confirm a record turnout of over 10,000 people for the tenth anniversary Show at Wiltshire's Castle Combe Circuit.
The event included a "Who's Who?" from the world of rallying, with BP Ford Abu Dhabi World Rally Team driver Jari-Matti Latvala heading the list. Latvala was out on track in Ken Block's Monster World Rally Team Ford Focus RS WRC and the Finn was won over by the event.
"It is always nice to do these types of events and I have been very impressed," said the 25-year-old.
"There are a lot of people here, it looks good, there are some very nice cars and there is a very good spirit too."
Latvala was joined by 1984 World Rally Champion Stig Blomqvist, who was on hand to help mark the 30th anniversary of the Audi quattro. As part of this celebration, a comprehensive line-up of original works Audi quattros was at the centre of the Rallyday paddock, covering their evolution through the 1980s. These included the original Gp4 quattro, which Audi used to launch its rallying campaign on the 1980 Algarve Rally - reputedly worth over a million pounds. Other key quattros on display included the 1985 Pikes Peak Hillclimb winning car and the only surviving original GpA Audi Coupe quattro, which was driven by David Llewellin and Phil Short on the 1987 Lombard RAC Rally.
"The Rallyday is getting better and better every year," said Blomqvist.
"The organisers do a good job. The Audi quattro was a fantastic rally car in its day and I think people want to see it again."
In addition, Skoda UK made its debut at the event and two-times British Rally Champion Guy Wilks took the time to show off the new Skoda Fabia S2000 Facelift, which he drove for the first time at the end of last month, on the Barum Czech Rally Zlin, round 9 of the 2010 FIA Intercontinental Rally Challenge. "It is a credit to the Rallyday just how many people have turned out, both to support the event with cars and drivers and also how many spectators are here," Wilks said.
"I don't know what the figures are, but looking around it is very busy. This is my second or third time here and it is nice to see it has not got tired. I have heard plenty of noises to make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. It is great to hear some fit Audis going of the line. There are lots of good quality old and new cars here.
"Around the track, it is good that the spectators can see the cars for such a long time, too. Castle Combe is not a natural rallying environment, but at the same time that is almost its draw, because it is so accessible."
Meanwhile, 1977 and 1985 British Rally Champion Russell Brookes, his co-drivers Mike Broad, John Brown, Paul White, Neil Wilson and Peter Bryant and his original sponsor John Andrews, were all there as part of a unique Andrews Heat for Hire Celebration. Spectators were able to view a range of the iconic cars which Brookes used during his successful long-term campaign, including one of his personal favourites, the Vauxhall Chevette HSR.
"I have been here many times and it is always a great event," said Brookes.
"There are lots of exhibits, lots of cars on display and, of course, the action keeps moving both on the circuit and on the rally stage.
"We have gathered together ten of my original ex-works rally cars, all in Andrews Heat for Hire colours. It is very special display. It was a very iconic period in British rallying. The sponsorship deal was the longest-lasting commercial sponsorship deal there ever was in the sport. It is amazing to get these cars all together."
Fellow British Rally Championship winner Gwyndaf Evans was in attendance, too, along with his son, three-times Fiesta SportTrophy championship winner Elfyn Evans. The Gwyndaf Evans Motors display featured several rally cars campaigned by Gwyndaf over the years, including a Seat F2 and a Brooklyn Sierra Cosworth - plus Elfyn's latest Fiesta R2. "I don't know where the ten years have gone since the inaugural Rallyday," said Gwyndaf. "But I think it draws more crowds every year. It is remarkable. Nobody is rushing to go anywhere. There are no clocks to be watching. It is a relaxing day and everybody seems to be very approachable. That is the key. It is a pleasure to be among enthusiasts."
Other stars at the event included Phil Mills (Petter Solberg's co-pilot until June this year); Phil Pugh (Guy Wilks' co-driver); Terry Kaby (Prodrive's WRC tester), Tom Cave (showing off the Proton S2000) and, of course, Rallyday host extraordinaire, 1972 RAC winning co-driver (with Roger Clark) and former Top Gear presenter Tony Mason. "It is a tremendous record to think this is the tenth Rallyday and it is a privilege to have been to all ten of them," Mason said. "I have got some wonderful memories of this event and it is quite impressive when you think of all the people who have come here over the years.
"The organisers have achieved amazing things and having Jari-Matti Latvala here, for instance, is a tremendous thing. There is great attention to detail and they cram everything in."
Indeed, with Russ Swift entertaining the crowds as normal with his spectacular precision driving display, as well as the Strictly Sideways Competition and the Feature Stage, which commenced with a special parade of cars from the Richard Burns Foundation, spectators had a real treat. The RBF were at Rallyday raising money for the charity and had an incredible line-up of Richard's rally cars, which spanned the 2001 World Rally Champions' successful - but all too short - rallying career. The cars were driven in a parade by many of Richard's former colleagues, including Stig Blomqvist, who drove his championship-winning Subaru Impreza WRC.
McRae Vision had an extensive display, with fans getting the chance to see the 1995 World Rally Champions' original Ford Sierra Cosworth and the championship-winning Prodrive built GpA Impreza 555. There was also an opportunity to have a go on the latest Colin McRae Dirt 2 video game; the fastest player won a real white-knuckle ride on the Feature Rally stage.
Rallyday organisers Brian Stubbings and Darin Frow both felt the show had been a resounding success and said that initial feedback was very positive. "We are delighted with how the day went," Stubbings continued.
"I'm really pleased with all the different teams which came along and there have been some fantastic displays, both out on the track and in the paddock.
"I was out and about a bit earlier on and the crowds on all the different banks were huge.
"There is pressure each year and you always want to try and make sure to have something new and interesting. Because it was the tenth one, we wanted to try and make it extra special this time and we'd like to thank everyone for all their support."
Frow added: "I can only echo what Brian said. It was a great day and everything ran smoothly. We've already started planning Rallyday 2011 and we will announce a date shortly."
MC-Video took extensive video footage at the event, which will be shown on a one-hour Motors TV programme covering the whole event on Friday 22 October 2010, starting at 9:15pm.
In the meantime, you can also re-live the tenth Rallyday by checking out our podcast, available on the official Rallyday website event news page and Free to dowload from iTunes.

Blomqvist and Wilks star for the Richard Burns Foundation at Rallyday
Posted: September 20, 2010 9:50 AM
The Richard Burns Foundation enjoyed a successful day's fundraising at Saturday's Rallyday event at the Castle Combe race circuit in Wiltshire.
The cars which defined Richard's World Rally Championship-winning career were on static display at the Richard Burns Foundation stand and then on parade around the Castle Combe circuit, with 1984 world rally champion Stig Blomqvist and Britain's leading rally driver Guy Wilks at the wheel.
Having taken his title in a fearsome Audi Quattro, Swedish superstar Blomqvist was more than ready to take on the Subaru Impreza WRC which Richard and co-driver Robert Reid used to win the 2001 world crown. For Wilks, the last car Richard drove competitively, the Peugeot 206 WRC beckoned. And the current Intercontinental Rally Challenge frontrunner absolutely loved it.
"It was an honour to get in that car and drive it," said Wilks. "When I was 10 or 11 and growing up dreaming of being a rally driver, it was Richard that I looked up to. He had such an individual approach. He was a great, great character. When I was doing my first ever World Rally Championship round abroad in Sweden, we went out for dinner and he gave me some advice. He was always there for me to call and talk to. The help he gave me was invaluable. He was an inspiration and to have the chance to drive his 206 was a pretty emotional moment and one I won't forget."
As well as offering a big thanks to Guy and Stig for driving the cars, the Richard Burns Foundation also has to thank Guy and Skoda UK Motorsport for offering a seat alongside him for a hot lap of Castle Combe, which was snapped up by an eager rally fan on the day. Similar gratitude is extended to the BP Ford Abu Dhabi and Monster Ford World Rally Teams, who offered the same opportunity, with another fan getting the chance to sit with recent Rally Finland winner Jari-Matti Latvala in Ken Block's Monster Focus. Both fans went home very happy after an unforgettable experience.
The other cars on parade, driven by Richard's friends, were the Talbot Sunbeam in which Richard started his career, the Peugeot 205 GTi in which he destroyed all of his competitors for two years in succession in the Peugeot Challenge; the Peugeot 309 GTi which he used to win his class on the RAC Rally in 1991, just his second ever WRC outing. As well as the Impreza, two Legacys were part of the line-up: the Group N car Richard and Robert used to win the British National title in 1992 and the glorious-sounding Group A Legacy RS which carried them to an unforgettable 1993 British Rally Championship title.
Rallyday wasn't all about Richard's rally cars, however, as the RB320 Owners Club was also in attendance, lining up their stunning black, limited edition Subaru Imprezas for everybody to see. The Richard Burns Foundation would like to thank the RB320OC for its much-valued efforts in raising more much-needed cash.
The Richard Burns Foundation now looks forward to the inaugural Remembering Richard event at Prodrive in Banbury, Oxfordshire, on Saturday September 25.
CAR PARADE TO REMEMBER RICHARD BURNS AT RALLYDAY
Posted: September 10, 2010 11:03 PM
The Richard Burns Foundation will have a major presence at Rallyday 2010 with Stig Blomqvist, the 1984 world rally champion, one of several star drivers set to get behind the wheel of a car belonging to the Richard Burns Collection.
Burns, who lost his brave battle with cancer in November 2005, four years after becoming England's only world champion rally driver, was a regular at the Castle Combe event and made his last public appearance at the Wiltshire venue in August 2005.
He will be remembered by a parade of his carefully maintained rally cars, which include the Subaru Impreza WRC he used to win the world title in 2001, and the Peugeot 205 GTI he drove during the formative years of his career.
Legend Blomqvist is one of six drivers taking part in the parade, which will also feature the Group A and Group N Subaru Legacys Burns campaigned in the National and British rally championships, the Peugeot 309 GTI he upgraded to following his stint in the 205, and the Peugeot 206 WRC he drove during his aborted 2003 world championship campaign, which was curtailed when he became ill. The other drivers assisting Blomqvist have yet to be finalised although Intercontinental Rally Challenge event winner Guy Wilks is set to pedal one of the machines.
The six cars will be on static display at the Richard Burns Foundation area in the Castle Combe paddock before and after the parade, where volunteers from the charity, which helps young people affected by brain cancer and other neurological disorders, by giving them the means to face the future with confidence, will be accepting donations. RBF merchandise will also be on sale and visitors to Rallyday purchasing a programme will be receive a £5 clothing discount on presentation of a voucher.
As part of the fundraising effort, the Richard Burns Foundation has teamed-up with Skoda UK Motorsport to auction off a passenger ride alongside Intercontinental Rally Challenge event winner Guy Wilks in a Skoda Fabia Super 2000.
"Rallyday always had a special place in Richard's heart and we're delighted to be working with the Rallyday organisers to put on display of the six cars that meant so much to Richard," said Zoe Scott, Richard's former partner and now a key member of the RBF organising team. "As well as bringing back some wonderful memories we are hoping to arrange more vital funds for the Richard Burns Foundation to help those suffering from brain cancer and other neurological disorders."
Rallyday takes place at the Castle Combe race circuit near Chippenham in Wiltshire on Saturday September 18. Visit the official website, www.rallyday.com, for more details.
Remembering Rallyday 2005
Richard Burns made his final public appearance at Rallyday in August 2005. A little more than three months later, he lost his brave battle with cancer and passed away aged 34.
One of the many highlights during that day in Wiltshire was a parade of some of Richard's favourite rally cars, including the Subaru Impreza WRC he and co-driver Robert Reid used to clinch the World Rally Championship title in 2001.
Burns was driven by Reid through the event's Feature Rally Stage in his BMW X5 followed by close friends Mark Higgins, Martin Rowe and the McRae brothers Alister and Colin, who took to the wheel of some of Richard's most cherished cars. It was an emotionally-charged occasion and prompted a standing ovation by the Castle Combe crowd.
"I've still got a picture on my office wall of me driving Richard with Richard's cars driving around behind us," says Reid. "You have some fantastic cars in that collection. A lot of people think the world championship-winning car was the best but in actual fact it was the 1993 Group A Legacy which we won the British championship with. It's such an awesome car and sitting watching Alister McRae driving it, we were team-mates with Alister, and spitting flames going off the line at Castle Combe really brought a very big smile to Richard's face and a bit of a tear to his eye."
Reid recalls the background to Richard's attendance at Rallyday. "Richard had periods during his illness when he was a bit better and then not so good. He'd been having a reasonably good period and it was an opportunity to take the whole car collection out and for Richard to come along as well and have a weekend out."
Zoe Scott, a constant source of love and devotion to Richard during his illness, also remembers that day with great fondness after being driven through the stage in Burns' Impreza WRC by the late Colin McRae.
"It was a day I will never forget," says Scott. "Richard was very nervous to face his fans because he knew he had changed somewhat due to his devastating illness. To have the response he got was so rewarding for him. There were few smiles during his illness, but this brought a smile to his face and a glimpse of normality. Richard was very, very proud."
Burns had visited Rallyday on a number of occasions and was also a regular at Castle Combe when, as a 14-year-old, he drove his father Alex's company car during training events organised by the Under 17 Car Club. The full version of this feature appears in the official Rallyday souvenir programme.
JRM makes debut at RallyDay
Posted: September 10, 2010 11:02 PM
JRM is delighted to confirm that it will make its first appearance at RallyDay, the popular annual celebration of motorsport, which takes place at Castle Combe racing circuit in Wiltshire on Saturday 18th September.
Currently one of the front-running teams in this year’s British Rally Championship, it is appropriate that the company that builds and prepares the quickest Mitsubishi Evolution Xs currently competing in the UK’s premier rally series will be displaying its cars at this event.
And JRM will certainly be making its presence felt on its first visit to RallyDay. Taking pride of place on the stand will be the Group N Mitsubishi Lancer that is being campaigned by Gwyndaf Evans in this year’s British Championship, the experienced Welshman scoring two outright wins in it so far this season. The car will be seen in action during the day, when Evans himself drives it on the feature rally stage.
Alongside this full-spec production-class Mitsubishi will be JRM’s new ‘National’ specification Evo X, which makes its first public appearance at RallyDay. This new offering from JRM has been produced to a carefully considered budget and to a specification that is designed to attract drivers who want to compete in a fast and reliable four-wheel-drive R4 Class car without spending a six-figure sum.
Making regular appearances on the circuit during the course of the day will be JRM’s 400RS track-day car, demonstrating the performance, handling and drivability of this extremely capable Mitsubishi. The car can also be viewed on the JRM stand, where full details will be available.
Also on display and available for purchase will be a range of parts and merchandise, from JRM’s retail arm Sumo Power. This will include HKS products, Ralliart competition parts and the latest range of NISMO (Nissan Motorsport) clothing.
JRM Executive Director James Rumsey is pleased that his company will be appearing at RallyDay for the first time this year and said:
“Now into its tenth year, RallyDay is very well established and regularly enjoys high attendance figures. We are therefore pleased to be making our debut at the event as I am sure our cars and products will appeal to the people who are there. Therefore, it is our intention to put on a good show!”
A notable absence on the JRM stand will be one of its 600bhp Nissan GT-Rs that are competing in the FIA GT1 World Championship under the banner of Sumo Power GT. However, there is a good excuse for it not being there, as the team will be racing in Portugal during the RallyDay weekend.
LATVALA TO DRIVE 'MONSTER' FORD FOCUS RS WRC AT RALLYDAY
Posted: September 1, 2010 3:04 PM
Rallyday confirms that BP Ford Abu Dhabi World Rally Team driver Jari-Matti Latvala will pilot Ken Block's Monster World Rally Team Ford Focus RS WRC at this year's tenth anniversary Show, at Wiltshire's Castle Combe Circuit on Saturday 18 September.
"The opportunity to drive the Ford Focus RS WRC on asphalt at Castle Combe is something I am looking forward to, away from the pressures of competition. I hope I can put on a really good show for the fans, with lots of sideways action and I'm sure the event will be as big a success as it has been in previous years," commented Latvala.
Rallyday organisers, Brian Stubbings and Darin Frow are both delighted that the Finn has agreed to attend the UK's premier rally car show and drive the M-Sport-built car which Block drove recently in Germany.
"It is brilliant for us to welcome Jari-Matti to the show, driving the same Ford Focus RS WRC car driven in the World Rally Championship by Ken Block," Stubbings said. "Block took the award for 'Most Thrilling Driver' at the Goodwood Festival of Speed back in July and I'm sure Jari-Matti will be equally thrilling in front of the Rallyday crowds in a few weeks!"
Latvala is one of a number of rally celebrities already confirmed for the event, with 1984 World Rally Champion Stig Blomqvist also returning to mark the 30th anniversary of the Audi quattro. As part of this celebration, a comprehensive line-up of original works Audi quattros will be in the centre of the Rallyday paddock, covering their evolution through the 1980s and Blomqvist will be back behind the wheel to bring some nostalgic memories of this amazing era of the sport.
In addition, the Rallyday team is delighted to welcome a new manufacturer to the event: Skoda UK announced recently that two-time British Rally Champion, Guy Wilks will drive the new Skoda Fabia S2000 Facelift, which the Englishman got his first taste of last weekend on the Barum Czech Rally Zlin, the latest round in the 2010 FIA Intercontinental Rally Challenge.
"Rallyday at Castle Combe is a really good event, with a fantastic atmosphere. There is always a great collection of rally cars, both modern and from a bygone era, and the access people have to the cars and drivers is second to none. I really love driving at Rallyday," said Wilks.
"Although Castle Combe is a race circuit, it's a great opportunity to put on a show for the large crowd of spectators - especially as there are so many of them!"
1977 and 1985 British Rally Champion, Russell Brookes, his co-drivers, Mike Broad, John Brown, Paul White, Neil Wilson and Peter Bryant and original sponsor John Andrews will all be there as part of a special Andrews Heat for Hire Celebration. Spectators will be able to view the range of iconic rally cars which Brookes used over his successful long-term campaign.
"This year's Rallyday is special for me," said Brookes. "The 70s and 80s were the most exciting years for British rallying and throughout this period, I had a unique partnership with Andrews Heat for Hire, who sponsored me for 17 of those years. Their bright yellow livery epitomised this exciting era and Rallyday is bringing together over a dozen original rally cars - from Mk2 Ford Escorts, through Chevettes, Sunbeam Lotus, Opel Mantas and the 400bhp Sierra Cosworths among others.
Many of co-drivers of the cars will be joining us on the stand of what will be a unique display, one which is unlikely ever to be repeated. See you there."
1996 British Rally Championship winner Gwyndaf Evans and three-times Fiesta SportTrophy championship winner Elfyn Evans will be at the show, with a display from Gwyndaf Evans Motors. The display will feature several rally cars Gwyndaf has campaigned, including Seat F2 and Sierra Cosworth - plus Elfyn's latest Fiesta R2, along with new cars from the family-run Ford and Suzuki dealership.
Indeed, several stars from the World Rally Championship have already signed up for Rallyday 2010, including Phil Mills (Petter Solberg's co-pilot until June this year); Nicky Grist (who co-drove for the late Colin McRae); and, of course, Rallyday host extraordinaire, 1972 RAC winning co-driver (with Roger Clark) and former Top Gear presenter Tony Mason.
The action doesn't stop there either, with Russ Swift returning to entertain the crowds with his spectacular precision driving display, as well as the Strictly Sideways Competition, a special Rallycross demonstration - including competitors from the very competitive one-make Suzuki Swift class and the RX150 buggies.
The Richard Burns Foundation is back in force, too, and will display six of the original works cars which span the career of the late 2001 World Rally Champion. McRae Vision will also have a presence, with fans getting the chance to see the 1995 World Rally Champions' original Ford Sierra Cosworth and the McRae R4. There will be an opportunity to participate in the latest Colin McRae Dirt game and to buy a range of McRae merchandise as well.
"We've pulled out all the stops this year and are delighted with the incredible line up of cars and stars coming to help us celebrate Rallyday's tenth anniversary. We also hope to make more exciting announcements shortly!" Frow concluded.
Spectator tickets for Rallyday 2010 cost £20 per adult on the gate. Accompanied children under 16 can enter for FREE.
