Cumiskey/Foley claim Evo Challenge victory in Killarney
Posted: May 6, 2008 4:53 PM
This weekend’s Ordnance Survey Rally of the Lakes saw Brendan Cumiskey and co-driver Conor Foley win round three of the Mitsubishi Ralliart Evolution Challenge Ireland in spectacular style, when they stormed through the final stage of the Killarney-based classic snatching victory from the grasp Damian Tourish and Domhall McAlleny.
The two-day rally started on Saturday morning and featured nine stages south of the host town on the Beara Peninsular, followed by a further nine on Sunday east of Killarney around Macgillycuddy’s Reeks, the total of which provided competitors with 257 competitive kilometres. Of the capacity entry in the International category of 152 cars, nine were Evolution Challenge competitors, the best entry for the Irish Mitsubishi series so far this season.
The rally began with one of Ireland’s most famous stages, the twisty 19 kms of Moll’s Gap, made even more demanding by occasional showers and wet roads. Initially setting the Evo Challenge pace were the two Murphy’s: Colm stopping the clock 2.8 seconds ahead of Owen, with Tom Curley third a further 48 seconds behind.
Stage two saw the leading Evo Challenge positions consolidated and, with stage three cancelled due to an accident, the first service halt of the day showed Colm Murphy ahead by an impressive 27 seconds.
The remaining Evolution Challenge drivers admitted they were being cautious of the conditions and were therefore dialling themselves in gradually, but for Liam McFall it was a case of Deja-vu, when, as it had done in round two, he entered the service area with a blown turbo, necessitating a replacement before the next loop of three stages.
Disappointingly for Owen Murphy it was also a case of history repeating itself with another retirement, when he found he could not start his car due to a damaged ECU as he attempted to leave the service area. His exit mean that Colm Murphy now had an Evo Challenge lead of nearly two minutes, even so, that didn’t stop the 2007 Group N Tarmac Champion from extending his advantage during the rest of the day.
Behind him the battle for second place was hotting-up between Curley, Ballentine, Tourish and Cumiskey, who where all separated by just 14 seconds. Frustratingly for Curley, he soon dropped out of contention when the intermittent misfire he had suffered in round two mysteriously re-appeared.
Stepping up his pace, Tourish took second place on SS4 and held position for the day’s remaining stages. With the final stage of the day cancelled, at the overnight halt the leader-board showed Murphy in seventh place overall and a staggering five minutes ahead of the next Evo Challenger Tourish, who was now 13 seconds in front of Cumiskey.
Following overnight rain, Sunday dawned clear and bright, with the first stage of the day a second run through Moll’s Gap, this time in dry conditions. With more speed attainable, drivers started to push the limits of adhesion. Cumiskey was lucky to get away without a puncture after clipping a rock, whilst Evo Challenge series leader Alan Carmichael was more comfortable on the drier roads and took 36 seconds off his day-one time.
McFall was also gathering pace, but had opted to run without the anti-lag system switched on in order to conserve his turbo and maximise his chances of getting to the finish.
For Michael Murray, the weekend was about to get more frustrating. After a troubled first day a turbo pipe disconnected itself on Sunday morning and, although fixing the problem at the side of the road, the loss of time saw him relegated to the back of the field.
For Murphy, SS11 will be a stage to forget, when at the first corner his car slid wide when cold tyres met a damp surface. The rear of car slammed into a bank which consequently spun his Evo across the road. With too much damage sustained to continue, Murphy had no choice but to call it a day – another bitter end to a top-class performance where he had shown that he and the JFR Lancer had the pace to win Group N outright – and finish well inside the top ten overall – as well as dominate the Evo Challenge field.
This left an intriguing battle between Tourish, Cumiskey and Ballentine, Curley exiting the chase when his car’s rear suspension became deranged after a hard landing on one of the deceptive jumps in SS12.
With the fight at the front increasing ferocity as the day progressed, it all came down to the very last stage – the 15 km run through Bellaghoisin and, as cars lined up at the start line, the gap between Tourish and Cumiskey was down to just 5.7 seconds. Cumiskey threw caution to the wind and stormed through the stage, emerging with dents in the front of the car following contact with a chicane – sure evidence of a big push.
Such was his pace, Cumiskey set the fastest Group N time overall and was an impressive 13.6 seconds quicker than Tourish, his performance accrediting him with his second Evolution Challenge victory of the season by a margin of 7.9 seconds.
“That was some battle”, said a delighted Cumisky at the finish. “I decided it was win or bust on the last stage and I can’t believe we did it by such a margin. I’ve really enjoyed this weekend: the JFR prepared car has been 100%, the Pirelli tyres have worked well and the mix of competition and camaraderie in the Evo Challenge has been great.”
As this was his first event since suffering an industrial injury in January, Tourish was satisfied with second, as was Ballentine with his third place and second Evo Challenge podium finish in as many events. Carmichael ended his weekend in fourth and, in doing so, continues to lead the championship at the season’s half-way point.
Both McFall and Murray were pleased – if not relieved - to make it to the finish and scoop championship points.
The 2008 Mitsubishi Ralliart Evolution Challenge Ireland is supported by: Sunoco Racing Fuels, Pirelli tyres, Mitsubishi Motors Ireland, Performance Friction Brakes, Speedline Corse wheels, PIAA lights, Murray Motorsport, Sparco racewear, Pacenotes and James Foley Rallysport, who are providing a Group N Lancer Evolution for the 2008 Champion to use in next year’s Rally Ireland.

Ford Fiesta SportingTrophy - Fisher takes the Lakes
Posted: May 6, 2008 4:45 PM
Round 3 of the Maxol E85 Ford Fiesta SportingTrophy Ireland series took place on Sunday 4 May when nine registered crews started the Killarney Rally of the Lakes.
The event, run by the Killarney and District Motor Club, based in the bustling town of Killarney, woke on Sunday morning to bright sunshine which had taken over from the damp blustery conditions of the previous day. The rally gave competitors the chance to compete on 140 competitive kilometres over some of Ireland’s best classic rally stages.
SS1, Molls Gap at 19.6 kilometres, saw an early blast on a classic stage for the crews. Fastest of the FST drivers was Meilyr Evans (19) from Machynlleth with his co-driver Andrew Edwards. Meilyr, the team-mate of championship leader Elfyn Evans, flew up the legendary stage in a time of 10:46.4, 3.6 seconds faster than Alastair Fisher (19) from Enniskillen with co-driver, Barry McNulty. Third, and just 0.1 seconds behind Fisher, was Elfyn Evans (19) from Machynlleth, who had passed two other competitors on the stage. Fourth on the first stage was FST Ireland championship new boy, James Everard (22) from Hull with co-driver Sam Collis. Everard is currently leading the FST UK series and finished the first stage just 9.2 seconds down on Evans’ time.
SS2, Ballaghbeama at 16 kilometres, saw Elfyn Evans top the time sheets, with Fisher just 0.3 seconds behind in second. Meilyr Evans dropped from first to third but stayed within 7 seconds of the new leader, GEMsport team-mate, Elfyn Evans. Everard retired on this stage as a result of an accident. The Englishman was catching another car on the stage and a momentary lack of attention saw him slide wide on a corner and off the road. The car was undamaged but stuck fast and unable to continue.
SS3, Ballaghsheen at 19.4 kilometres, again saw Elfyn Evans top the time sheets, taking the gap to second placed man Fisher to 3.6 seconds. Third on the stage was once again Meilyr Evans, just 1.4 seconds down on Fisher to stay in touch with the leaders.
SS4, Been Hill at 17 kilometres, saw Fisher go back on the attack to take 11.9 seconds from Elfyn Evans and arrive at the first service halt of the day in the lead - by just 8.3 seconds. Second on the stage and third overall was once again Meilyr Evans - the young Welshman showing that he is a fast learner adapting well to the conditions on the stages. Fourth on the stage and fourth in the overall standings was Paul Quinn (19) and co-driver Jason Gillespie.
In service, with the weather conditions clearing and the roads drying, the majority of crews chose the ‘dry’ weather Pirelli RS7 tyre in order to get the maximum performance.
SS5, Caragh Lake, was cancelled for all the crews in the event after the crash of Gareth MacHale, fortunately without injury.
SS6 was a repeat of the 19.4 kilometre on Ballaghsheen. Once again it was Elfyn Evans topping the timesheets - 4.5 seconds in front of his team-mate Meilyr Evans - who was in turn 0.9 seconds faster than Fisher. Fisher held onto the lead, but now reduced to just 2.9 seconds.
SS7 was a repeat of the 17 kilometre Been Hill stage. Here Elfyn Evans once again took the fastest time, a huge 19.2 seconds faster than his first run of the stage. However, Fisher was again in close attendance - just 0.1 seconds slower to keep his overall lead going into the final service of the event. Meilyr Evans was again in close contact with the leading pair - just 2.7 seconds slower than Fisher.
SS8 saw Elfyn Evans fastest, just 0.5 seconds in front of Fisher with Meilyr Evans once again third. Kyle Orr (18) from Dromore, with young Scotsman, Drew Sturrock on the pacenotes was in trouble on the stage. A broken driveshaft in the previous stage had caused some damage to the gearbox and Orr was keen to get to the finish of the event - but the damage was slowing the car and he would later retire before the finish. Also in trouble was Barry Greer (20) from Carryduff with co-driver John Lemon - a high speed accident would leave the Fiesta ST dented but the crew unharmed - unfortunately unable to finish the event.
Going into the final stage of the event, the top-two were separated by just 2.3 seconds. The 17 kilometre Shanera stage would see another last stage battle for the lead of the Maxol E85 Ford Fiesta SportingTrophy. Fisher claimed the fastest time on the final stage, just 1.5 seconds in front of the hard charging Elfyn Evans to claim his first FST Ireland win of the year; Elfyn saying at the finish that he had one eye on the championship lead and that second placed points would be perfect for his championship. Meilyr Evans held onto a strong third position - his best result of the year.
Alastair Fisher (19) from Enniskillen said:
"Today has been hard, we have been pushed to the limit - but it has been another great battle. With the win on the Pirelli and now here, this has helped our championship chances no end. I am already looking forward to the next round in the series, and need to try and repeat the performance on this event, it will be tough but I’m ready for the challenge.”

Kris Meeke to Drive Renault Clio S1600
Posted: April 28, 2008 3:49 PM
Kris Meeke is to have his first outing of the year at the Killarney Rally of the Lakes in a S1600 Clio, supplied and run by EXCEL RALLYING, and returns to the event where he won his first International in 2007. Despite failing to put together a deal for a WRC car, Kris keen to get back in the cockpit in familiar surroundings, and hopes to make the most of the opportunity in the Renault Clio S1600.
Kris was delighted to put together a deal.. "I'm a driver, and to get back behind the wheel is imperative for me. When our deal for the WRC car didnt happen, the S1600 car is the next best option. It's where I learnt my trade, and although I have never competed in the Clio, it should come to me fairly quickly. The S1600 cars are relatively cost effective, and I get every bit as much satisfaction from extracting the speed from these cars as I do in WRC machinary. I've seen EXCEL's setup, and it really very professional, and as far as I'm aware, are the only firm in Ireland that hire's S1600 cars, and I have every confidence we can have a good run."
On his plans for the rest of the season..."I have a good set of supporters working on my behalf, and they are considering some exciting options for later in the year. It's still in the early stages at the moment, but in the meantime, Killarney will be ideal to keep myself and Paul (Nagle) match fit."
Rally of the Lakes runs from 2nd-4th May. Saturday includes all the great classic stages of the Beara Peninsula such as Cod’s Head, Ardgroom and the Healy Pass, while on Sunday the rally will visit such old favourites as Caragh Lake, Beallaghbeama and the reintroduced Beallaghoisin, which has not been used for a number of years.
As always both days rallying starts with Ireland’s most famous stage, Moll’s Gap.
Centralised service on both days has been introduced with the service park in Castletownbere on Saturday and Killorglin on Sunday
Mitsubishis line up for Killarney classic
Posted: April 28, 2008 3:47 PM
Round three of the Mitsubishi Raliart Evolution Challenge Ireland takes place next weekend (3rd & 4th May), when nine of the registered teams in the all-tarmac one-make series for Group N (production specification) Lancers Evolutions line up for the Ordnance Survey Ireland Rally of the Lakes.
In its 29th year, the event is one of Ireland’s most established rallies and, as well as the third round of the Evolution Challenge, also hosts the third round of the Global Group Irish Tarmac Rally Championship.
First Mitsubishi seed are Colm Murphy/Ger Loughrey, who have led both previous Evo Challenge rounds this year, but a broken driveshaft in the first and contact with a wall in the second, means that they are yet to score any points. They will therefore adopt a more calculated approach to ensure that this time, they get to the finish and keep their title hopes alive.
Next Evo Challenge crew is first-round winner Brendan Cumiskey, with his co-driver this time out Conor Foley. After missing round two because of the event clashing with his sister’s wedding, Cumiskey will be looking to make up for lost ground this weekend.
Owen Murphy is the third Evo Challenger to start and has recruited the services of ex-works Mitsubishi co-driver Greg Shinnors to accompany him. Murphy has shown he has the pace to finish on the podium, but an off in round two did not help his quest for the title.
They are followed by round-two winners and championship leaders, Alan Carmichael/Ivor Lamont, who will be on a points scoring mission in order to maintain their current advantage. Next in line, having had to miss round two because of business commitments, are Michael Murray/Aidian Mason, who make a welcome return to the series in their well turned-out Evo VII.
After suffering an industrial injury just before the first round in February, Damian Tourish is delighted to finally be joining the Evolution Challenge, who together with co-driver Domhall McAlenny are looking forward to getting their season underway,
After missing round one and suffering a blown turbo in round two, Liam McFall/Donal Lennon are another crew aiming to get their season’s campaign off the ground, whilst behind them, Stanley/Ballentine/Richard Hyland and Tom Curley/Paul Horan start a surprisingly long way down the field, especially after they finished second and third respectively in March’s round two of the Mitsubishi series.
Based in Killarney, this year’s Rally of the Lakes features nine stages on Saturday and a further eight on Sunday, the sum of which provides the overall International category field of 152 competitors with a total competitive distance of 257 kms.

The OSI Killarney International Rally of the Lakes hosts round two of the 023 Tiles Southern 4 Rally Championship 2008,
and there are some great battles in prospect for the May bank holiday weekend.
Leading the championship overall after the first round, the Quality Hotels West Cork Rally, are
Donie O Sullivan and his navigator Paul Nagle who took the West Cork win in their Impreza WRC .Donie is seeded at number
five for his home event and must be one of the favourites on his home rally.Barry Goodman will be Donies navigator on this
occasion.
Liam McCarthy/Kieran Murphy are in second place overall in their Corolla WRC after West Cork with
James Stafford/Frank Dwyer(Darrian) in third.
Liam is not on the entry in the Rally of the Lakes so it is an ideal oportunity for James or indeed
Alan Ring or Wesley Patterson, 4th and 5th respectively, to stake a claim for that second spot in Killarney, and as
this is the second round and it is possible to sign up on the first THREE rounds there are still a few very quick
exponents of the sport to sign on.
In class three Aidan Jackson/Denis Jackson(Civic) will be hoping to build on their class win in West Cork
but will have Billy Hayes/Pierce Doheny Junior(Civic) hot on their heels to make up for lost ground.
Alan Ring/Adrian Deasy(Evo 9) lead class 4 from Sean Flanagan/Brian Duggan(Impreza N) with Mark Nange/Mike Clyne(Impreza N)
in third, although Colm Murphy and Owen Murphy are sure to apply some pressure here to make up for their DNF’s in the West Cork event.
There are some fantastic battles in store in ALL the classes this coming weekend,Wesley Patterson/Ruth Guest(Escort) lead Class 14
from Washington James,(Escort)with Kevin O Donughue/Joe O Leary(Escort) third and Pat Donegan(Escort) fourth.
Philip Cross/Dave Kearney lead class 15 in their Escort Cosworth with Conor Kavanagh/Don Montgomery second in their Mk 2,
John Hickey/Sorcha Kelly are third in the class with Gwynn Thomas/Anthony O Conaill 4th in their Ford Puma.
Class 13 leaders are James Stafford/Frank Dwyer(Darrian) with Fergus O Meara/Liam Brennan(Escort) second and
Graham Scallan/Thomas Scallan(Escort) third.
The class 12 leaders are Gerard O Connell/Stephen Hayde(Escort) while Steve Roberts/Adrian Hayes(Escort) are in
second place in the class.
The top three in class 11 are Terence O Shaughnessy/Eugene McGrath(Corolla),Jason O Mahony/Jonathon O Mahony(Civic)
with Philip Giles/Aoife Buttimer((Corolla) in third place.
Class 10 is topped by last years winner,Stephen Sheehan(Sunbeam) with Paul Sheehan calling the notes for him and
they are being put under significant pressure from Victor Beamish/Susan Beamish(Nova) in second with Richard Lucey/Sean Sheedy
in close attention in third.(Sunbeam).
Class 9 leaders are Turlough Kenny/Patrick Meade(Escort) while the class 8 top three are Donie O Sullivan/Paul Nagle(Impreza WRC),
Liam McCarthy/Kieran Murphy(Corolla WRC) and Niall Guinevan/Leslie Stanley (Impreza GP A).
Class 6 leaders are Daragh O Riordan/Kevin Dolphin(Corsa) with Ted O Riordan/Adrian O Conell(Satria) second
and Clom Forde/James Jordan(206) third.
Class 5 table toppers are Alan O Riordan/Anthony Jordan(Ka) with Adam Clews/Peter Williams(Puma ) second.
That only leaves class 1 which is being lead by Noel O Regan/Andrew Beamish(Swift) and Class 2 which sees
Denis Nagle/Irene O Donovan in pole position.
So all in all there is something in the 023 Tiles Southern 4 Rally Championship for everyone and with two more
sign on rounds yet to come the competition for the rest of the year will be fierce.
Make sure you book your ringside seat!!
Fiesta’s Race to the Lakes
Posted: April 27, 2008 11:26 PM
Round three of the Maxol E85 Ford Fiesta SportingTrophy Ireland series takes place on Sunday 4 May when nine registered crews line up for the Killarney Rally Of The Lakes.
The event run by the Killarney and District Motor Club, based around the Killarney National Park and beautiful Ring of Kerry will give competitors the chance to compete on seven stages covering 140 competitive kilometres over some of Ireland’s most famous rally stages.
Leading the crews away will be the championship leading duo of Elfyn Evans (19) from Machynlleth, again partnered by the young Welshman Gareth Roberts. The crew come into the rally with maximum possible points in the championship after two back-to-back wins on Irish soil. The crew who run as part of Elfyn’s father’s - Gwyndaf Evans - GEM Sport Team will be hoping for another successful rally and make it a trio of wins in the Irish series.
Stephen Wright, (18) from Co. Monaghan holds second position in the championship series but with crucial exams taking priority he will sit out the Rally of the Lakes and let the third placed man in the series – Adrian McBride from Co. Tyrone and his co-driver Rodney Hicks - follow Elfyn off the start ramp.
Alastair Fisher, the 2007 FST Ireland champion, will be third away but starts the Rally of the Lakes in an uncharacteristic sixth position in the championship table – dogged by bad luck over the first two rounds of the series. The 19-year-old Enniskillen man will be hoping to repeat the form he showed on the recent Pirelli Rally where he dominated the second round of the FST UK series to win by a clear margin.
Two new competitors join the FST series for Killarney Rally – the first of which is James Everard (22) from Hull and his co-driver Sam Collis. The pair currently lead the FST UK series after two rounds and the former karter is using the opportunity to compete on the Killarney Rally to develop his pacenote skills.
The second new team for the Killarney Rally are Billy McCullins from Dromore and co-driver Aidan O’Connor. McCullins is a supporter of FST UK driver Liam Regan and this will be his first competitive outing in the FST Ireland series.
The championship which uses Maxol E85 Bio-Ethanol fuel – produced locally in Ireland from a by-product of the cheese industry by the Carbery Group in Cork to promote the environmentally efficient development work being undertaken by the Ford Motor Company in Ireland.
With the competitors fighting for a prize fund of almost €3,000 on this event, competition will be close and relentless, with any of the crews capable of taking the outright victory of the FST series third meeting.
Elfyn Evans (19) from Machynlleth, Wales said:
"Coming into the third round in the lead of the championship our main aim is to leave here still leading the championship. We have not had any time to do some testing before the event, and we know that Alastair will be quick so I will need to be quick from the word go. It’s good to see James coming over to take the fight to the Irish and Meilyr is getting quicker by the event so there will be some tough competition in the event. I have never been to the rally before and I’m really looking forward to it."

Gareth McHale and Craig Parry will lead away the 151 starters in the 29th International Rally of the Lakes which gets under way from the Gleneagle Hotel Killarney on Saturday May 3rd at 7.55 am.
For McHale this will be his second year to occupy the number one slot and he will be hoping to put behind him the memories of the 2007 event, where a series of punctures cost him so much time that he eventually dropped down the leader board to finish in sixth place.
Following McHale off the ramp will be the current leader of the Global Group Tarmac Rally Championship, Eamonn Boland.
Although he has never finished in the top spot in Killarney, Boland has always performed well on the Lakes and his consistency, as shown on his Circuit of Ireland victory at Easter, should ensure him of another useful tally of championship points.
Behind the leading pair come two drivers who have been past winners of the Lakes.
Tim McNulty at three won the 2006 rally, while Derek McGarritty at 4 will be seeking to repeat his 2004 victory. Dermot O'Gorman, who partnered McGarritty in 2004 has temporarily retired from rallying and is replaced by Killarney man Diarmuid Falvey.
Another man making a return to rallying will be Donie O'Sullivan who has hired a McKinstry Subaru for a crack at his home international. Paul Nagle, who partnered Donie to victory in the West Cork Rally in March, is replaced on this occasion by Barry Goodman, as Paul had committed to co-driving for Kris Meeke, but sadly the 2007 winner found it impossible to pull together the budget for the event, or even to source a competitive car.
Former National Champion Stephen Murphy follows at 6 with current champion Aaron McHale at 7.
Kevin Lynch, Patrick Elliot and Seamus Leonard, all in Subaru Impreza WRC's complete the top 10
Current Group N Tarmac Champion Colm Murphy heads the Group N entry at 14, but this year he has abandoned the Subaru in which he won the 2007 championship and like many other top group N contenders he has opted for a Mitsubishi .
Colm is one of three brothers on the entry list, with Ted taking over Colm's 2007 Championship winning car and starting at 24 while Tony, co-driven by wife Brid is at 46 in his Mk 2 Escort.
A total of 96 homologated and 55 modified cars are included in the full field of 151 cars in the combined International and National field, with a further 44 in reserve.
With an average non start rate of 10%, about 15 of the Reserves have a good chance of getting a start.
Thirty five Histories are listed and these will join the main field at the start of Stage 5 at Healy Pass.
The nine contenders in the Fiesta Championship will start at the first stage on Sunday while 40 Juniors will enter the fray at the start of stage 14 on Sunday and will compete over the final five stages of the rally. A further 22 Juniors remain in reserve but unfortunately not more than four or five of these can realistically hope to start.
The organisers continue to be critical of the ruling which caps the number of starters allowed by Motorsport Ireland and point out that not only are a lot of crews who want to compete over the best stages in Ireland denied the opportunity to do so, but also the entry fees of forty four additional cars in the main field would generate over thirty seven thousand euro for the event, while running these cars would only require an additional road closing time of twenty two minutes.
Additionally, adding the twenty two Junior reserves at the end of the event would not only avoid the disappointment and frustration felt by these beginners, but, in the space of an additional 11 minutes of road closing time, it would generate six thousand six hundred euro additional income, which would just about pay the additional amount which the club has to pay for its insurance when it is forced to obtain it from the MI insurer rather than source it from an available alternative provider.
Once again Ordnance Survey Ireland, the National Mapping Agency, are title sponsors of the event, continuing an association which started in 1990 .
Additional support comes from The Gleneagle Hotel Group, who have been involved, either as main or associate sponsors since 1980.
Speaking at the Rally launch in Killlarney on Sunday 20th, Event Manager Mike Marshall said that apart from the Classic Stages and a dedicated team, the greatest asset which the event has is the continued support of loyal sponsors such as OSI and the Gleneagle Hotel.
While all events struggle to make ends meet financially nowadays, it removes much of the worry to know that there are reliable sponsors who provide a solid financial foundation for the rally budget each year.
