Irish 205s - MAHON WEATHERS THE STORMS The much anticipated start to the 2008 Irish 205 Challenge was a resounding success for the new drivers who entered Irelands best rally championship for beginners. The Mayo Stages based in Castlebar in the west of Ireland proved to be a huge challenge to all the drivers but first home was Barry Mahon from Tallaght in Dublin. Storm force winds were forecast by the weathermen in the run up to the event, but no one could have forecast how much drama would unfold in the first four stages of this event. First of the 205s on the road was Norman Dunne/ Bernard Mc Sweeney who posted what looked like a good time but reported an overshoot at a junction and some trouble with the fuel pump. Next up was Shane Burns/ Sean Balfe also complaining of time lost. Barry Mahon/ Mark Feeley came next which was an achievement in its self after they had to change the clutch late the night, before posting a time 10 seconds faster than Dunne. Dj Browne/ Antony Madigan came through next with the fastest time, a full 10 seconds quicker again the Mahon and happy with his performance. The next group of cars through were all new boys to the challenge with Aidan Cooney/ Paddy O Donnell down 28 seconds on the lead with Ulton McGowan/ Niall Burns and Andy Slattery/ Shaun Forde on equal time just 2 seconds back. Sean Sharkey/ Marty Sherlock were settling into their first event and a hired car 20 seconds further adrift. Also settling in was Kenny and David English taking things steady to be sure a finish on this their first stage in a new car. First retirement was Damien and Thomas McGauran who pushed to hard towards the end of the stage only to catch something in a grass verge and roll out. Stage two saw Aidan Cooney put in a brilliant if somewhat dubious time going 21 seconds quicker than Browne to take the lead. Slattery was 5 seconds down with Dunne and Sharkey just 1 second behind, Burns another second back and McGowan plus 3. Mahon again had trouble with overshoots and dropped another heap of time. Stage three saw all hell break loose, first Dunne stuck it off for 20 minutes, Browne also in the hedge and Cooney burst his radiator putting him out. Sharkey would also depart just when he was getting in on the act when he forgot to switch on the fans at the stage end causing terminal head gasket damage. Slattery went quickest by 7 seconds from Mahon who now led. McGowan held on in third 38 seconds back, Burns now fourth, Browne fifth, English sixth and Dunne seventh. Slattery now had the blood up and hammered through stage four, 20 seconds better than a subdued Mahon who was nursing his clutch and was desperate for a finish and points on the board. The others could not match this pace but held station as they headed for the second service halt of the day. Here trouble struck Slattery whose big effort on the stage had caused damage to the filler neck on the fuel tank. Repairs ran over the allotted service time and gained the Tipperary pair 30 seconds of penalties. Stage five was cancelled so on to stage six where Mahon picked up the pace to go equal fastest with Slattery who was now 6 seconds behind with two stages to run. McGowan and Dunne were a second apart in here, McGowan making third place his own. A tense start on stage seven saw Barry Mahon lose 3 seconds to Slattery with just one stage remaining the gap was just the same at 3 seconds. Could the novice on only his second rally knock the veteran of two seasons off the top ?. Try as hard as he could Slattery would drop a second to Mahon on the final stage to come home in a brilliant second place. Ulton McGowan would settle for third place on his first outing as a driver in the 205 challenge with Shane Burns fourth just 9 seconds behind. Fifth place went to Dj Browne who will be wondering what he has to do to win after such a good start. Sixth place went to cousins Kenny and David English on their first ever rally. In the final points position is Norman Dunne who will be sick with temper for making such a mess of stage three and ruling himself out of a good haul of points. The day however belonged to Barry Mahon who had such a tough run up to this event with the clutch dramas and the damaged inflicted on the test event he contested as a warm up. He walks away with the 250 euro prize money for 1st place, Slattery 150 euro for second and McGowan 100 euro for third. Well done to all and look forward to the next I205C encounter on the Midland Stages rally on April 6th. Thanks must go Mayo motor club and to CoC Jonny Rice and all who marshaled or helped for a great days rallying. Thanks also to our sponsors RORY GALLIGAN RALLYING MARTISPORT ABR SIGNS KUMHO TYRES EARS MOTORSPORT MacHALE’S MAYO (Report courtesy of Irish Dunlop – sponsors of the Irish National Rally Championship) The opening round of the Dunlop National Rally Championship, the Castlebar based TF Royal Hotel & Theatre Mayo Rally, was won by reigning Dunlop National Rally Champions, Aaron MacHale/Killian Duffy (Ford Focus WRC). At the conclusion of the eight-stage event, they were seven seconds ahead of former champions, Niall Maguire/Paul McLaughlin (Subaru WRC). Tim McNulty/Eugene O’Donnell (Subaru WRC) finished 21 seconds further adrift in third. Rodney Wilton (Ford Escort) was the top two-wheel drive competitor, he finished eighth overall. On the opening 17.9km stage, Aughagower, MacHale established a significant 18 second lead over PJ McDermott (Subaru WRC) with Seamus Leonard making an impressive start to hold third – a further three seconds behind. MacHale remarked that the conditions were very slippery and it was difficult to get grip on the surface. His Ford Focus WRC hit a chicane and arrived at the stage finish without its front spoiler. Behind the leading trio, Niall Maguire held fourth from Patrick Elliott, who had two overshoots while Glenn Allen in sixth, also struggled in the conditions. Tim NcNulty also endured an overshoot early in the stage and his new S12B Subaru suffered some cosmetic damage. Not so fortunate was Group N contender, Kevin Kelleher, who crashed his Mitsubishi. Out on the second stage, Drummin, former Dunlop champion, Niall Maguire and PJ McDermott set equal fastest time. MacHale arrived at the Westport service with a 13 second lead, he reckoned his Ford Focus wasn’t quite right after the altercation with the chicane on the opening stage and he adopted a cautious approach. McDermott continued in second but Leonard’s Subaru suffered driveshaft problems. That allowed Maguire move into third – seven seconds behind McDermott. Elliott moved up one place to fourth, while Tim McNulty, slotted his Subaru into fifth, he opined that the suspension was far too hard. Top two-wheel drive exponent, Mark Alcorn held an impressive fifth followed by Noel Redmond, Glenn Allen and Stephen Moore in the ex-Henning Solberg Ford Focus WRC. Rodney Wilton (Escort) rounded off the top ten while Danny McBride (Mitsubishi) led Group N from Willie Fannin (Subaru). Aside from Leonard, Kevin Barrett (Subaru) also retired on the opening two stages. On the repeat of both stages, McNulty and Maguire were the respective pacesetters. Rally leader, MacHale arrived at the service halt with a ten second lead over Maguire, who moved into second on Stage 3 after PJ McDermott crashed out. The same stage also accounted for the demise of Willie Fannin. Amidst a very heavy hail storm, MacHale’s Ford Focus spun in fifth and sixth gears. Maguire was untroubled in second and 44 seconds ahead of McNulty who was still experimenting with the set up of his new car. Elliott improved his performance and held equal third with McNulty. Stephen Moore and Glenn Allen filled the top six. Noel Redmond reckoned he was still trying to find a rhythm, Mark Alcorn (Toyota Corolla), despite a fuel pressure problem, was the top two-wheel drive exponent, he was eighth while rivals and Ford Escort pair, Camillus Bradley and Rodney Wilton completed the top ten. Danny McBride (Subaru) led Group N. McNulty punched in the quickest time for S.S. 5, Islandeady, while Maguire did likewise for S.S. 6, Newport. Maguire’s performance saw him cut MacHale’s lead to just five seconds while McNulty, 47 seconds further adrift, remarked that he was happy with the outcome of the changes executed at service. Meanwhile, Patrick Elliott lost some ground when he overshot on S.S. 6, nevertheless, he was fourth from Moore, who had to fend off the challenges of a charging Glenn Allen, who had moved to within five seconds. Noel Redmond occupied seventh, the Wexford driver reckoned he just couldn’t match the pace of his rivals. A puncture cost Mark Alcorn the lead of the two-wheel drive category and Rodney Wilton was perfectly placed to take advantage, he was eighth; Camillus Bradley (Escort) and Joe McHugh (Escort Cosworth) completed the top ten. Danny McBride (Mitsubishi) continued to dominate Group N. On the penultimate test, MacHale added six seconds to his lead and although Maguire took four back on the final stage, MacHale made the perfect start to the Dunlop series by securing victory and maximum points. McNulty finished third – 21 seconds behind Maguire with Elliott fourth. Moore won the battle for fifth – he finished 14 seconds ahead of Allen. Redmond was seventh in a top ten that also included Rodney Wilton, Camillus Bradley and Joe McHugh. Danny McBride (Mitsubishi) won Group N. 07/03/08 DUNLOP CHAMPIONSHIP BEGINS IN CASTLEBAR (Preview courtesy of Irish Dunlop – sponsors of the Irish National Rally Championship) REIGNING Dunlop National Rally Champion, Aaron MacHale heads an impressive entry for the Castlebar based TF Royal Hotel & Theatre Mayo Rally on Sunday. The opening round of the Dunlop series includes several drivers capable of capturing the Vard Memorial Trophy, the top prize for the ten round series where competitors can use the scores from their best eight performances. Commenting ahead of another national championship campaign, Richard Warbrick (Dunlop) remarked, “We are heading into a another exciting year. The implementation of the new rules has resulted in an increase in the number of starters. The capacity entry is a great endorsement for the Dunlop Championship and illustrates the strength of Irish rallying, not just in terms of WRC’s but also in Group N and the modified classes.” MacHale has signalled his intentions to contest the opening three rounds of the Dunlop series, he said, “That’s the plan, the structure of the Dunlop series is brilliant and there is a great atmosphere. I’m a member of the Mayo club so I would really like to win the event. We have family ties in Mayo, so it’s special in that respect.” MacHale will use his ’05 specification championship winning Ford Focus WRC. Meanwhile, Tim McNulty, who won two of the Dunlop rounds last season (Clare and Galway), will debut his new S12B Subaru and will use the event as a shakedown for the Circuit of Ireland. Patrick Elliott’s (Subaru WRC) participation in last year’s event was short-lived. He retired at the first junction of the very first stage, although he went on to win the Circuit of Kerry a few weeks later, his national championship bid faltered towards the end of the season. Having finished third in the recent Birr Rally, he will be determined to make the best possible start and finally land the national title. He lost the 2005 series to Charlie Donnelly on a tie-break. Michael Barrable (Ford Focus WRC) has withdrawn his entry as his car will not be ready, he will begin his Dunlop bid on the Circuit of Kerry. Armed with an S12B Subaru, Wexford’s Noel Redmond is another driver with title ambitions although it may take him a few rallies to find the pace of the Dunlop regulars. Tyrone’s, Glen Allen, who led the Dunlop series in the early part of last season, will drive his usual Toyota Corolla WRC, he had a consistent run until a heavy accident on the Kilkenny based Raven’s Rock Rally ended his title bid. Former triple champion, Niall Maguire, will pilot the ex-Stephen Murphy Subaru WRC as he bids to add to the titles he won in 1999, 2002 and 2004. Maynooth’s, Kevin Barrett, another of the Dunlop regulars, will try to emulate his third place finish in last year’s campaign. PJ McDermott, also in a Subaru WRC, is somewhat of an unknown quantity in terms of national championship rallying, he is seeded at number nine. The top ten is completed by Seamus Leonard, who will drive a Subaru WRC. The former Group N exponent could spring a surprise – he showed good form in the Galway International prior to retiring with transmission trouble. Sean Gallagher (Subaru WRC) and reigning Irish National Forest champion, Stephen Moore in his stunning ex-Solberg Ford Focus WRC, John Cairns and Eoin Doyle in Subaru WRC’s are seeded outside the top ten. Cork ace, Kevin Kelleher (Mitsubishi) is the top seeded Group N driver. Opposition in the showroom category includes inaugural champion, Willie Fannin (Subaru), Eamonn Daly (Mitsubishi), Danny McBride (Mitsubishi), Gavin Harris (Subaru), Pat Kirk (Mitsubishi) and Sean Flanagan (Subaru) are just some of the drivers hoping to annex the Patterson’s RallyNews Group N award. Elsewhere, the Mayo entry includes several talented drivers in the Modified category. They include Rodney Wilton, Camillus Bradley, Brian Brogan, Eugene Ferry, Russell Woods and Damien Gallagher in Ford Escorts; Mark Alcorn (Toyota Corolla), Maurice Moffett (Toyota Starlet) and Mac McKenna (Peugeot 205). The top entries in Class 6 are Limerick pair, Mark Sheahan (Renault Clio) and Ian Roche (Peugeot 206). 2008 irish 205 challenge kicks of on the Mayo National rally With only a few days to go before the recce is due to start for round 1 of the 2008 Irish 205 Challenge, many of the drivers face a race against time to ready themselves and their cars for what promises to be a thrilling championship. Top seed on the upcoming mayo stages is Norman Dunne with new co driver Bernard mc Sweeney alongside will not have competed since Wexford last September so could be a little rusty to begin with. As well as a new co driver to contend with he faces a race against time to have his car rebuilt in time so may not have any testing done. Some very promising stage times toward the end of last years challenge will mark him as a possible round and overall championship winner. Next up is Galway man Shane burns with Sean Balfe co driving. A previous challenge driver in 2006, Shane has spent his time and money getting his car up to good challenge spec recently. A good finish on the Galway junior rally earlier this month will stand to him on the early stages, if it rains in mayo then we could see Shane as the early leader. Top tip for this years challenge has to be Barry Mahon running at number 3 of the challenge drivers. fastest stage times on most events last years and an outright win on the second round was punctuated by mechanical trouble and a major slip when pushing to hard in round 4. With support from the best group of friends to service for him combined with co driver Mark Feelys sense of humour, Barry is sure to score well in mayo despite a bad start on the recent birr stages leaving Marti sport with plenty to sort in a short time. The brothers Mc Guaran start next in their newly rebuilt car which was still a bare shell when I spoke to Damien two weeks ago. With a years rallying now behind them now and some top three finishes on the latter rounds last year, I will put my money on them to win a round this year and improve on last years overall position. Dj Browne and Torloc O Reilly will start their third year of the challenge but due to work commitments have never managed to see it to the end. However DJ has always put up good times and ran very strongly on round 2 last year only to slip upon the last corner. Some recent work done on his car in Martisport will see an easier driven car and should he settle in quickly in mayo I see a possible top three result on the cards. Craig O Rourke is a none starter on this event due to other commitments but should hopefully return for the rest of the year and show further improvement with each stage mile after a good showing in his first season when he was at the head of the leader board after the first couple of rounds. First of seven new competitors to start this year is a familiar name to the challenge as he is the current champion co driver driving the championship winning car. Ulton Mc Gowan who expertly read the notes for Kerrill Waters last years enjoyed it so much he decided to buy the car from Kerrill and have a go himself. A few very promising results over the winter with his main service man Gerry Mc Garry calling the notes make me think that Ulton could be the surprise package of the year and may well finish the year with back to back titles. Kenny English starts his first event on the mayo stages having been impressed with the visiting world rally enough to take up the sport for real after years on the playstation games console. Co driven by his cousin David they will use a newly bought car from RGR to get maximum enjoyment in his first year but also aim to pick up some prize money as the year progresses. Next of the drivers starting their first season is Tipperary Peugeot man Andrew Slattery with Shaun Forde shouting the info to him. Andrew has built a new car over the winter from a challenge kit and ran on the recent birr stages close to his home. The same jump that caused Barry Mahon damage also taught Andy a lesson but it was electrical trouble after six stages that denied him a finish. Andy won‚t have the lower final drive fitted which will show on the tighter stages but judging by our recent tuition time with him, he will make up for it with bravery. Aidan Cooney and Paddy Mc Donagh are next up in a car used by Paul Conlon last year so should have no trouble with this being a good spec car. Aidan also took part in the Galway junior rally and battled with Shane Burns all day. An unknown to me but judging by his times in Galway we could be seeing Aidan close to the pace from word go. Next crew away probable have more rallying pedigree than all put together. Sean Sharkey is from the Cavan motor club which his father is high up in and he will be co driven by the vastly experienced Marty Sherlock who is coc of the Cavan stages and more used to sitting in high powered escorts. Sean is a former motocross champion and should settle in very quickly and may well post some top times from the off. John Woolsey from Co Derry joined us last year but suffered a nasty fall before round one which broke his lower back so put paid to any rallying that year. It‚s great to have him back this year fully fit and looking forward to a full campaign in his first full year of rallying. Finally on this event we have cork men Richard Guerin and Antony Linanne who face a race against time to get their car to meet the challenge spec for this event so may not score points but will nevertheless take part and gain valuable miles and experience for the rest of the year. Again the Irish 205 Challenge will combine experience and novice drivers battling against the clock and the stages to be crowned challenge champion at the years end. With some more drivers due to join for round two including last years runner up, we should be in for a treat as the years progresses. Where better to start rallying than Ireland‚s best value one make championship the Irish 205 Challenge. 116 Norman Dunne/Bernard Mc Sweeney (Peugeot 205) [10] 117 Shane Burns/Sean Bale (Peugeot 205) [10] 118 Barry Mahon/Mark Feely (Peugeot 205) [10] 119 Damien Mc Gauran/Thomas Mc Gauran (Peugeot 205) [10] 120 DJ Browne/TBA (Peugeot 205) [10] 121 Craig O Rourke/TBA (Peugeot 205) [10] 122 Ultan Mc Gowan/TBA (Peugeot 205) [10] 152 Kenneth English/David English (Peugeot 205) [10] 154 Andrew Slattery/Shaun Forde (Peugeot 205) [10] 155 Aidan Cooney/Paddy Mc Donagh (Peugeot 205) [10] 156 Sean Sharkey/Marty Sherlock (Peugeot 205) [10] 157 John Woolsey/TBA (Peugeot 205) [10] 158 Richard Guerin /Anthony Linnane (Peugeot 205) [10] Withdrawls - 03/03/08 72 111 126 165 166 168 4 177 46 121 86 14 (not 11) 172 28 29/02/08 Download Reserve List 28/02/08 26/02/08 Entry Lists Number Driver/Navigator (Car) [Class] 1 Aaron Mac Hale/Killian Duffy (Ford Focus WRC) [8] 2 Tim Mc Nulty/Eugene O Donnell (Subaru Impreza WRC) [8] 3 Patrick Elliott/Paul Goodman (Subaru Impreza WRC) [8] 4 Michael Barrable/Dermot O Gorman (Ford Focus WRC) [8] 5 Noel Redmond/Derek Brannigan (Subaru Impreza WRC) [8] 6 Glenn Allen/Damien Connolly (Toyota Corolla WRC) [8] 7 Niall Maguire/Paul Mc Loughlin (Subaru Impreza WRC) [8] 8 Kevin Barrett/Sean Mullally (Subaru Impreza WRC) [8] 9 PJ Mc Dermott/Sean Harris (Subaru Impreza WRC) [8] 10 Seamus Leonard/John Mc Cafferty (Subaru Impreza WRC) [8] 11 Sean Gallagher/Enda Sherry (Subaru Impreza WRC) [8] 12 Kevin Kelleher/Martin Kelleher (Mit. Preliminary Details With less than two months to go to the running of the 2008 Mayo Stages Rally, preparations are in full swing for this popular season opening event which takes place this year on Sunday 9th March. Once again the Mayo Stages hosts the opening rounds of both the Dunlop National Rally Championship and the McAree Engineering Border Rally Championship. In addition this year sees competitors on the Irish 205 Challenge taking on the challenging Mayo roads for the first time so there is certain to be plenty of competition for the 161 (plus 20 junior) starting places. Jonathan Rice from Castlebar returns as Clerk of the Course for the second year. Fresh from running the final televised stage at Mullaghmore on Rally Ireland, Jonathan has established an experienced team to run this major event. Using a loop of four stages repeated twice, competitors will face a mixture of classic stages from years gone by combined with some new tests. Title sponsor and rally headquarters for the weekend is once again the TF Royal Hotel & Theatre Castlebar. Mayo & District Motorsport Club has established a successful relationship with the TF over the past number of years and the club looks forward to working with Pat Jennings and his staff again in 2008. Regulations for the 2008 Mayo Stages Rally will be posted to registered competitors from this Friday January 18th and will be available online from Monday January 21st. The event will be officially launched on Monday January 28th with a function at the TF Royal Hotel. |
