For what was considered as his home event, the Ulster Rally would provide Rory Galligan with a huge challenge.

The roads of the north were completely different from what Rory was used to in the south, with very demanding stages. He did not let this deter him though, as he relentlessly harried Mark Fisher all day Friday to finish the day only a couple of seconds behind in the Respa backed Peugeot. Saturday morning saw more of the same with these two pulling out a huge lead over the rest of the challenge competitors and Rory nipped through when Mark hit gear linkage trouble and romp away to a huge three minute class lead.

Rory’s totally trouble free run ended on the last stage when his clutch gave up and in loosing one minute in the stage he still won the class by two minutes and finished the event 17th overall and eight in Formula 2. The sting in the tail came as he was disqualified for outside assistance and a distraught young man was left to ponder what would have been one of the best results of his career.
