PEUGEOT DANCE ON PROMENADE!

A Mediterranean like promenade at New Brighton saw the TOTAL supported Super 106 Cup start in exhilarating style after the long lay off due to the foot and mouth crisis. The event was created to fill the void, and despite the unusual rally format, it generated massive enthusiasm from the 31 strong Super 106 Cup contenders.

Chris Moore from Newcastle was fastest out of the blocks, his background in the Safety Devices Tarmac Championship standing him in good stead, taking a further two fastest during the day. However, an absolute stormer from Rory Galligan on SS2, 4th quickest overall, put him into the lead which he kept until Stage 6. At that point a young charger from Ireland overtook him, Kris Meeke on only his third ever event showing a clean pair of heels to the Super 106 Cup brigade.

However bad luck was to befall the 21 year old from Dungannon as after setting fastest times on stages 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7, the gear linkage gave way in the middle of stage 8, and a very dejected crew returned to the service area. To reward this performance, Kris & co-driver Glen Patterson collected the Total Quartz 9000 award.

Rory then retook the lead which he kept to the finish. The County Meath man has a new co-driver, David Jones, and the partnership obviously works well. They were delighted to splash the champagne, and Rory commented that they had won the first round last year too, but "hopes this year goes a bit better!"

Ryan Champion had a sluggish start, but got quicker and quicker, and finally finished in third place, after an almighty tussle with Chris Moore, 0.2 seconds being the difference at the end of the day. Chris grinned, "That's worth £200 to me."

Another Irish crew, newcomers brothers Garry & Peter Jennings took 4th place overall, the ever smiling pair had an even cheesier grin when they took fastest on stage 9. They were even grinning when the side mirror smashed the passenger window, they were having such a good time. Paul Alexander & Mike Panes took 5th, and Adrian McElvaney rounded off the Top 6, winning the Motorsport News Award for best improvement on seeding in his cracking run.
