McKILLEN SECURES TOP RESULT WITH STUNNING RECOVERY DRIVE ON SCOTTISH PEUGEOT ENCOUNTER
by Oisin O'Briain

A stunning recovery drive on the Scottish based Jim Clark Rally saw promising Irish rally talent Max McKillen secure a well deserved fifth in the latest round of the Peugeot Super 106 Cup over the weekend. The 26 year old took the position following a display of some superb driving storming his way through from the tail end of the field.

The pre-event favourite for the fifth round of the one make series, Max saw his challenge for overall honours come to a premature end when on special stage 3 his Barkel Motors backed car left the road. Requiring the assistance of spectators to rejoin, the costly incident saw the Dublin driver lose almost a minute in time and drop to 22nd position in the competitive 23-car field.

Determined to overcome the set-back, Max set about a recovery performance which shows just why the much talked about rallying prospect is seen by many as one of Ireland's most exciting young drivers. Through Friday night and the early hours of Saturday morning he climbed an impressive 15 places on the leader board to end the opening day of the rally in 8th position.

Restarting Saturday evening, day 2 saw even more impressive driving from the current Irish Tarmac Rally Championship F2 leader. Setting a blistering pace he recorded the fastest time on stage 15, a puncture on stage 20 the only thing which could slow the candidate for the prestigious Billy Coleman Award. Climbing a further 3 places Max ended the event in 5th position.

The third consecutive weekend of competition for Max and his co-driver Tim McQuaid, the duo will enjoy a three week break before resuming battle in the Super 106 Cup when round 6 of the series heads to the Quinton Rally on July 29th.

The pairing who have just re-launched their official web site www.rally-max.com have announced the addition of the Dunlop Rally of Ireland to their rally busy schedule. Taking place at the end of August, they are hoping to shortly announce details of the car they will use on the event.
