Mayo & District Motorsport Club Navigation Trail - 16-17 Oct '99

Over 75 miles were covered around South Mayo from 10 p.m. Saturday 16th October to finish at the event headquarters, the Western Hotel, Claremorris, early on Sunday morning. Held under the new Motorsport Ireland regulations, competitors from all over Ireland came to test out their orienteering and map reading skills, during the four-hour event. Clerk of the Course, Sean McHugh and his team, provided a tough challenging route using mainly roads off the beaten track. Prior to the start, the competing cars were checked by Motorsport Ireland officials at Cormac Hanley’s 24-Hour Vivo Service Station on the Galway Road.

By 2 a.m. Sunday morning (17th October), all of the cars returned to the Western Hotel. Their score cards were then analysed to see if they checked-in at all the time points manned by Club stewards along the route. At the prizegiving ceremony, Sean McHugh thanked his team of officials and marshals for their valuable help and the competitors for making the event possible. He also thanked Paul Hanley, Proprietor, Western Hotel and Cormac Hanley, Proprietor, Vivo Service Station, Galway Road for the use of their respective premises and facilities during the event. The Gardai and Parish Priests in the surrounding areas were thanked too, for their assistance. "On behalf of the organisers Mayo & District Motorsport Club, we sincerely regret any inconvenience caused to residents in the areas where the event was held during the night," said Sean.
