Paul O'Connell claimed a last minute win in Saturday's Wexford Hillclimb at Glynn, near New Ross, when his elderly Delta's final run just beat Michael Roche's earlier mark, set while the double champion was struggling to keep his damaged Mygale between the hedges at the finish line. Rory O'Brien settled in well to his new Reynard to take third, while defending champion Frank Byrnes was down in seventh in his 4.5 litre Pilbeam MP45.

At nearby Ballyanne on Sunday, O'Connell led the first run but gearbox failure at his second start prevented further progress. Simon McKinley showed his usual absolute commitment, to take outright victory in his Escort, a rare feat in a saloon, with Byrnes taking third this time ahead of championship sponsor Peter Dwyer's Delta and the rapid Sierra Cosworth of Don Butler.
