BREEN STEADY ON THE MAYO
Report courtesy of Dunlop – Sponsors of the National Rally Championship
The opening round of the Dunlop National Rally Championship, the Castlebar based TF Royal Hotel & Theatre Mayo Rally resulted in a fine victory for former Dunlop champion, Ray Breen and his co-driver, Damien Morrissey. Their Ford Focus WRC finished 42 seconds ahead of the Ford Focus WRC of Aaron MacHale/Derek Brannigan with Noel Redmond/Ger Healy (Subaru WRC) a further one minute and six seconds behind in third. The Group N category was won by Michael Curran/Fabian McShane (Mitsubishi).
The principal retirement was that of last season’s Dunlop National Rally Championship runner-up, Patrick Elliott and his co-driver, Paul Goodman, they retired on the first junction of the opening stage with gearbox problems.
Breen made the perfect start and in difficult conditions took a ten second lead on the first stage and subsequently added nine more seconds from stage two to lead by 19 seconds at the first service halt in Ballina. Second seed and last year’s Dunlop National Championship runner-up, Patrick Elliott (Subaru) retired on the first junction of the very first stage. The Cavan driver experienced gearbox difficulties en-route to the stage and was forced out when he was only left with first gear.
Aaron MacHale and Noel Redmond shared second place on the opening stage but on S.S. 2. MacHale made the slot his own as he moved three seconds ahead of the Wexford driver. The top trio all remarked on the slippery conditions of the stages. At the Ballina service there was a tie for fourth between the Toyota Corolla of Glen Allen and the Subaru of Sean Devine, the former commented that he was a little too cautious over the two stages.
Maynooth’s, Kevin Barrett set a strong pace on S.S. 2 to move into sixth with former triple national champion, Niall Maguire (Subaru) seven seconds behind. Elsewhere, Group N contender, Frank Wray was a fine eighth followed by Sean Gallagher (Subaru WRC) and the Group N Mitsubishi of Eamonn Daly, who completed the top ten.
Wray, who reckoned he took a tidy and steady approach, set a fine pace ahead of Daly and Danny McBride. Ian Barrett, Seamus Leonard and Willie Fannin were next, Leonard lost time when he clouted a bridge. Defending Patterson’s RallyNews Award champion, Alan Ring stated he was very fortunate not to have spun his Subaru, he was 39 seconds behind Wray.
In the rear wheel drive category, Camillus Bradley (Ford Escort) set a stunning time through S.S. 2 to take the category lead.
On stages three and four near Killala, Breen was again the dominant force and duly stretched his lead over MacHale to 34 seconds. MacHale made second more secure as he moved 20 seconds ahead of Redmond while Allen, Devine and Kevin Barrett completed the top six. There was a change in Group N when Wray crashed his Mitsubishi and although he eventually finished the stage, the time lost saw him plummet down the order. Michael Curran was perfectly placed to take control of the showroom category. Ian Barrett (Subaru) also retired on S.S. 4.
On S.S. 5 and 6, Breen continued to set the pace and went 39 seconds ahead of MacHale, who was only a second behind the Kilkenny driver through S.S. 6. At service, MacHale remarked that he was finding his pace but the lack of a pre-event test was a drawback. Redmond was 40 seconds adrift of MacHale but more than content with his performance. Devine moved ahead of Allen who endured two spins. Maguire was seventh followed by Gallagher and the Group N trio of Curran, Leonard and Kelleher. Fellow Group N contender, Willie Fannin crashed his Subaru out of the rally on S.S. 6.
MacHale interrupted Breen’s dominance of fastest stage times when he set the pace on the penultimate stage, albeit three seconds faster than his rival. Breen signed off with fastest time on S.S. 8 to seal a fine victory. Redmond was a solid third and a resolute Allen reclaimed fourth at the expense of Devine. Maguire, Barrett and Gallagher were next in classification with Group N pair, Curran and Leonard completed the top ten.
Curran’s margin of victory was ten seconds, Kelleher took third in the category and twelfth overall while defending champion, Ring was sixth (seventeenth overall).
Rodney Wilton (Escort) was the top rear wheel drive exponent, he finished a mere second ahead of Camillus Bradley.

All Set To Roll On Mayo Stages Rally
Finally the wait is over. One hundred and thirty three days since the last competitor rolled into Parc Ferme in Skibbereen, and one hundred and forty eight days since the last engine was silenced in Donegal, the highways and byways of Ireland are once again set to reverberate to the sound of highly tuned rally machines. National championship rallying is back, and back in style!
Welcome to Mayo for what promises to be the start of a fantastic season’s rallying. Once again, Mayo & District Motorsport Club’s flagship event heralds the start of two major championships. Dunlop returns as sponsor of the ten round National Rally Championship, while the six round Border Rally Championship welcomes a new title sponsor in Monaghan based McAree Engineering.
It’s a mixture of new and old for 2007. A new Clerk of the Course takes charge for the first time. Castlebar man Jonathan Rice, himself a regular competitor, has established an experienced team to ensure a successful running of the event.
Once again, the TF Royal Hotel & Theatre Castlebar comes on board as title sponsor and rally headquarters for the weekend. However this year see the event head northwards away from the South Mayo stages used in recent years, and instead take in stages around Mayo & District Motorsport Club’s traditional heartland of Ballina.
Competitors will tackle four stages, each repeated twice, giving a total stage distance of 110 km. Stages 1 and 2 are located in the Knockmore area, while stages 3 and 4 take competitors to tests in Moygownagh and Killala. Service is centralised in Ballina mart with competitors regrouping after stages 2, 4 and 6.
A capacity entry of 151 cars plus a further 20 juniors are expected to take the start ramp on Sunday morning. And with no fewer than 16 World Rally Cars, a plethora of very competitive drivers in Group N machines, plus the usual crowd pleasing modified cars, there is sure to be something for everyone’s taste.
Heading the field away is Ray Breen. The Kilkenny man is hoping to reclaim the title he won in 2005 after a relatively disappointing season last year. He returns with the familiar Focus WRC he has campaigned for the past couple of seasons, with Damien Morrisey in the hot seat.
It may have taken some time for Patrick Elliott to score his first win, but it didn’t take him long to acquire a taste for the winning habit. Unlucky to lose the title last year on a tie break, the Cavan man will start as one of the favourites for victory in a new Subaru Impreza WRC S11. Paul Goodman sits alongside as usual.
Reigning West Coast Rally Champion Aaron MacHale will be hoping to add another title to his collection this year. The Rathcoole driver has certainly started the year in the right way with victory in the recent Birr Multi Stages Rally, and is well capable of victory on the day. Derek Brannigan co-drives in one of the MacHale family Focuses.
Tyrone’s Glenn Allen returns for another crack at the National Rally title. Third last year in Mayo shows he certainly has the pace in his aging Corolla WRC to be at the sharp end at by rally finish. Damien Connolly is again calling the notes.
At five is the only man in the field to have won this event previously. Niall Maguire may claim that he rallies purely for fun these days, but the Monaghan haulier still has a competitive streak, and with local club member Paul McLoughlin calling the notes, there will be no shortage of commitment from these two.
But it isn’t just these five that will be battling for overall honours; any one of the top 15 is more than capable of claiming an historic victory on the day.
In Group N also, expect to see a real battle royale. All the leading protagonists from 2006 have returned hoping to wrest the crown from 2006 champion Alan Ring. Willie Fannin, Mike Curran, Gabriel Martin and Kevin Kelleher are all proven winners at this level, while Seamus Leonard, normally seen on the Tarmac Championship but a winner here in 2005 is also certain to be pushing for glory. This promises to be one intense battle!
And then to the modifieds, still the favourites of many spectators. Crowd pleasers like Mac McKenna, Camillus Bradley and Rodney Wilton belie the fact that these competitors are on a serious pace from the off. Watch out also for reigning Border Rally Champion Brian Armstrong and rapid Cavan man Russell Woods. Another crew likely to be setting times right up with the big boys are Tom Holton and Francis Kenny in the Celica ST205.
And so on down the entry list, the sheer quality of which has to be seen to be believed. It promises to be a fantastic days rallying. Let the action begin!
DUNLOP READY TO GO IN MAYO
A new season and a fresh challenge as the ten round
Dunlop National Rally Championship gets underway at
Castlebar on Sunday with the TF Royal Hotel & Theatre
Mayo Rally. Former champion, Ray Breen in his Ford
Focus WRC heads up a formidable entry that has several
drivers well capable of making the best possible start
in their bid to land the Dunlop National Rally
Championship crown.
Kilkenny man, Breen won the title in 2005 and it is
worth noting that it wasn’t until mid season that he
racked up an outright win in that particular campaign.
Consistency is one of the key attributes to winning
the series. On a shakedown ahead of the Dunlop
campaign, Breen retired whilst leading the Birr Rally,
however, his car will be fully sorted out before Mayo.
“I was delighted with the new Dunlop tyres we tried
out. The tyres were very forgiving in the slippery
conditions, at my request, the side walls of the tyres
were stiffened and it made a big difference as I was
able to carry the speed around corners.”
One of his title adversaries is Cavan’s Patrick
Elliott in his S11 Subaru WRC, he ended last year’s
Dunlop campaign with a brace of wins in Clare and
Skibbereen, but still lost the title on a tie-break
with Charlie Donnelly.
Aaron MacHale will drive the ‘05 specification Ford
Focus WRC and will be boosted by his recent victory in
the Birr Rally. With several third place finishes
under his belt from 2006, he will be very keen to
continue the upward spiral. Fellow Dubliner, Derek
Brannigan will call the notes.
Tyrone’s, Glen Allen made sporadic appearances in last
year’s Dunlop series and he certainly cannot be
discounted especially if he gets a good start in Mayo.
Another driver that made occasional appearances in
2006 was Niall Maguire. However, this season, he has
vowed to contest the entire series as he tries to add
to the titles he won in 1999, 2002 and 2004.
Another driver capable of mounting a challenge is
Donegal’s, Martin Doherty (Subaru WRC) and he will
have benefited from his outings in the series last
season.
Maynooth’s, Kevin Barrett in a McKinstry run Subaru is
back for a tilt at the title, his best result was
third overall in 2005.
The top ten also includes Noel McCarrick, Sean
Gallagher and Kieran Shaw, all in Subaru WRC’s.
Gallagher was a regular in the national series until a
fire destroyed his Subaru on the Tipperary
Stonethrowers Rally two seasons ago.
Sean Devine and Noel Redmond, also in a Subaru WRC’s
are likely to have extended campaigns in the Dunlop
series and both have the potential to worry the top
seeds. Also included in the Mayo entry is Jack
Sleator in yet another Subaru WRC.
The Patterson’s RallyNews Group N award (for the
highest placed overall Group N finisher in the Dunlop
series) is always vigorously contested and a quick
glance at the quality of the category in Mayo is a
stark reminder that the trend should continue.
Willie Fannin (Subaru), the inaugural Patterson’s
champion, current incumbent, Alan Ring (Subaru),
another former winner, Mike Curran (Mitsubishi Evo9)
are joined by the likes of the vastly experienced,
Seamus Leonard, Gabriel Martin and Kevin Kelleher,
also in Mitsubishi Evo9’s. Martin won the Group N
category in Tipperary last year while Kelleher
dominated the series over the initial rounds in 2006.
Another promising driver, Ian Barrett (Subaru) and
Frank Wray (Mitsubishi) are also intent on making a
solid start to the season.
Elsewhere, the Mayo entry includes John Cairns
(Subaru), Tom Holton (Toyota Celica), David McNulty
(Subaru WRC), Joe MacHugh (Escort Cosworth), two wheel
drive exponents Camillus Bradley (Escort), Mac McKenna
(Peugeot), Rodney Wilton, Trevor Lancashire, Gordon
Rogers, Eugene Ferry, Brian Armstrong and James
Coleman all in Ford Escorts.
The Super 1600 class features the Citroen Saxo of
Seamus Gallagher, Brian O’Mahony (Renault Clio), Tommy
Doyle (Ford Puma) and one of just two female drivers
in the entry, Sarah Moynihan (Peugeot 206).

Ring Gears Up For Mayo
Reigning Patterson Rallynews Group N national champion Alan Ring will begin the defence of his title at the forthcoming Mayo Stages Rally on March 11th. The Castleisland native will campaign a latest specification Subaru Impreza N12B, the Prodrvie supplied car is the next evolution of the machine he used to great effect on last years championship.
When asked about the difference between the two machines, Alan commented “The car seems to be very good, similar to last year’s model. There are a few minor changes this year such as the introduction of 18’’ wheel, which should translate into improved overall top speed. Other that that the cars are identical”
The Munster Joinery backed team used the recent Birr Stages rally as a shakedown for the 2007 season and managed to stave off the challenge of Willie Fannin to win Group N and finish 4th overall.
When asked about the chances of retaining his title in 2007, Alan commented “It’s very hard to say, the championship is all about scoring consistently. Competition will be tougher than ever this year, we’re not 100% sure of our plans for the season but we’ll definitely be out in Mayo for the first round” Ex-champions Willie Fannin and Michael Curran are expected to line out for the Dunlop series as is ITC regular Seamus Leonard. Championship regulars Kevin Kelleher, Gabriel Martin and Tadgh Linehan are all expected to contest the showroom category again this year making for a very close fought affair.
Alan will once again be partnered by Cork co-driver Adrian Deasy. As well as contesting the opening rounds of the Dunlop National championship the Munster duo will compete on selected rounds of the Tarmac Championship as well as Irelands inaugural WRC event next November.

Joe Corcoran - Vice-Chairman Motorsport Ireland Commission,
Enda Kenny TD,
Noel Gibbons - Mayo County Council ROad Safety Officer,
Aaron MacHale - National Rally Competitor and Board Member of Road Safety Authority,
Sean McHugh - Chairman, Mayo & District Motorsport Club.
Using the slogan ‘Ease off the pace – everyday driving isn’t a race’ the club is hoping to get the message across to the many thousands of spectators who attend the popular season opening rally, that speeding should be left to competitors on the special stages.
This is the first time that a motor club has actively worked with a local council to promote a road safety campaign of this kind.
Officially launching the campaign, leader of the Fine Gael party Enda Kenny T.D. spoke about the ongoing carnage on our roads, and complemented Mayo & District Motorsport Club and Mayo County Council Road Safety for taking this significant initiative.
Vice-Chairman of Motorsport Ireland, Joe Corcoran said he was delighted to see the Mayo club launch this campaign, and hoped that other clubs would follow the example and promote similar messages.
Leading national rally competitor Aaron MacHale is also a board member of the Road Safety Authority, and said it was very important to get the message across to spectators that they should not try to emulate what they saw on the rally stages.
Visitors to Mayo in early March will be greeted by large notice boards displayed at prominent locations throughout the county which will focus on the message for all road-users to drive with care and enjoy the rally. In addition, extensive campaigns in local papers and radio and in the specialist motorsport media will reiterate the message in the run up to, and during the rally week-end.
The campaign is being run with the support of Mayo County Council’s Road Safety Office. Mayo County Council was the first authority in Ireland to establish a department dedicated specifically to address road safety. Speaking at the launch, Road Safety Officer Noel Gibbons thanked Mayo & District Motorsport Club for the opportunity to cooperate on this historic initiative, noting that it was especially pertinent bearing in mind the large number of young people who follow the sport.
Chairman of Mayo & District Motorsport Club, Sean McHugh, thanked Mayo County Council for supporting this initiative and said that the motorsport community had a great opportunity to get the message across that there was no place for speeding on public roads Sean called for the development of off-road centres that would allow young drivers to practice their driving skills in a safe environment.
The TF Royal Hotel & Theatre Mayo Stages Rally takes places on March 11th 2007. It is the opening rounds of both the Dunlop National Rally Championship and the McAree Engineering Border Rally Championship. The event is headquartered at the TF Royal Hotel & Theatre, Castlebar.
