Class win for O’Mahony/Higgins on Raven’s Rock Stages Rally
Carrigaline driver Brian O’Mahony claimed maximum class points in round six of the Dunlop National Championship, the Carrick-on-Suir Raven’s Rock Stages Rally, on Sunday (24 June).
O’Mahony and Mayo co-driver John Higgins won class 6 to claim the full 10 points and finished 15th overall in their OM Concrete Products and Fitz Samuels Insurance-backed Super 1600 Renault Clio.
The crew did not have the smoothest of runs as they kept getting caught out on the wrong tyres by the changeable weather conditions but they managed to post consistently impressive times on the Kilkenny-based tarmac event to come home and add to their tally in the National Championship.
“I achieved what I set out to do by winning the class so I’m pleased with the result,” 22-year-old O’Mahony said. “The weather was terrible though and it meant we kept getting caught out with our tyre choice. Just as it was drying out we would put on the slicks and then it would rain heavily again, so we would put on the full wets and it would dry out, it was just difficult to make the right choice but we battled through.
“All went fine otherwise. The car ran well and the stages were good. It’s good for us to get the 10 points in the class after missing a couple of rounds and not finishing the opening round as it helps our championship push.”
O’Mahony and Higgins will next be in action in round seven of the Dunlop National Championship, the Connacht Sligo Stages Rally, on Sunday 8 July.
Results
Overall Positions and the Class 8 results are provisional depending on the outcome of an appeal by Michael Barrable/Dermot O'Gorman to the stewards against their exclusion by the CoC.
O'Gorman/Barrable were excluded for allegedly not stopping at the scene of an accident.

023 TILES SOUTHERN 4 PREVIEW
This weekends Ravens Rock Rally hosts round three of the 023 Tiles Southern 4 Rally Championship for 2007.
023 Tiles of Cork and Bandon are again sponsoring the series; their sixth year acting as title sponsors, and the continued backing from them has ensured that the Championship grows in stature with each passing year.
Since it’s inception the championship has gone from strength to strength and this year is no exception with well over 100 crews registered so far and the Ravens Rock being the last event where competitors can sign up.
Round 1,The Quality Hotels West Cork Rally saw Michael Barrable/Dermot O Gorman(Focus WRC), taking maximum points after an enthralling weekend long battle between themselves and the Impreza WRC of Tim McNulty/Anthony Nestor.A puncture for McNulty on SS 13 cost him a minute loss which meant Barrable caught and passed him on the stage.
McNulty fought back on SS 14 and tried a little too hard,a spin on the stage meant he dropped 5 seconds to Barrable,he again attacked on ss 15 and took the 5 seconds back which had Barrable 28 seconds clear going into the last stage ‘Sam’s Cross.
Barrable drove a cautious but fast final stage with McNulty going through 17 seconds quicker than him resulting in an 11 second win for Barrable /O Gorman.
Last years Champions Melvyn Evans/Sean Mullaly succumbed to electrical problems on day one, which lead to their eventual retirement from the event.
In the classes Kevin Kelleher took the spoils in Group N with James O Sullivan second and Mark Nangle third.
Kevin O Donoghue put in an appearance in his MK 2 Escort and took full points in class 14 for his efforts, with Conor Curley(Mk2) second and Conor Cavanagh(Mk2) third in the class. Class 13 was won by Wesley Patterson.
The OSI Killarney International Rally of the Lakes was next on the list of events and Melvyn Evans bad luck was to continue,Denis Cronin, who scored 14 points in West Cork, was unable to capitalise on this or the fact that Michael Barrable did not enter the lakes as he was unfortunate enough to register a DNF here also,as indeed did Tim McNulty.
Kevin O Donoughue took the Evo out in the “Lakes” and took the 20 overall points on offer to take the overall lead in the championship.
Wesley Patterson also had a good clean run in Killarney and the 16 overall points he took was enough to see him in second overall after the “Lakes”.Kevin Kelleher was third in the overall standings.
In the classes John Hickey leads class 15 in his “Fubaru” from Philip Cross in an Escort Cosworth and Ger O Donovan, also in an Escort Cosworth.
Kevin O Donoghues 10 points in West Cork was enough to see him keep the lead in class 14 as Conor Curley did not enter the “Lakes” and Conor Cavanagh recorded a DNF.
Wesley Patterson still leads class 13 with 9 class points to add to the 10 he collected in West Cork.Michael Barrable leads class 8 although on the same 10 points as Tim McNulty in spite of the fact that he did not enter in Killarney, the reason being the retirement of Tim McNulty from the event.
Kevin Kelleher holds the lead in Gp N from Mark Nangle and Sean Flanagan in third in the class.
So,this weekend in the Ravens Rock it’s all to play for, some trying to hold their positions while others try to make up for lost time.
However it pans out there will be some very hot competition out there from class two to fifteen in what has become one of the most established domestic Rally Championships in Europe.

O'Mahony/Higgins looking to make up lost ground on Raven's Rock Stages Rally
Carrigaline driver Brian O’Mahony is looking to make up lost ground in the Dunlop National Championship with maximum class points on the Carrick-on-Suir Raven’s Rock Stages Rally on Sunday (June 24).
O’Mahony and Mayo co-driver John Higgins missed the last round of the series, the Cavan Stages Rally, and after failing to finish the opening round in Mayo and not being able to compete on round three, the Monaghan Stages Rally, are aiming for a class 6 victory in round six of the championship in their OM Concrete Products and Fitz Samuels Insurance-backed Super 1600 Renault Clio.
The crew have won their class, finished as first 2WD car and inside the top 12 on both rounds they have completed in the series this season. O’Mahony is currently third in the class 6 drivers’ table and 15th equal overall while Higgins is joint second in the class 6 co-drivers’ standings and 16th overall heading into the Kilkenny-based tarmac event.
“We’re targeting the full 10 points in the class on Raven’s Rock as we already have three zero scores on the board,” 22-year-old O’Mahony said. “I did the rally last year but we didn’t have a great run as the oil light came on about two miles into the first stage and we had to stop for five minutes or so and we ended up being too far back and we couldn’t make up the time. The stages on the event are very nice though.
“The championship is going okay and we have done really well in the two rallies we have finished. We would be in a better position in the standings though if we had finished in Mayo and had got a start in Cavan. Hopefully this weekend we can boost our scores with another good result.”
