McNulty/O'Donnell win Galway Rally thriller
Tim McNulty and Eugene O Donnell took victory in the Loughrea Plant Sales Galway Summer Rally in a Subaru Impreza S11 WRC, in a time of 1:02:35
A mere 6 seconds separated them from 2nd place, which went to Eammon Boland and Francis Regan in a similar spec Subaru. Aaron MacHale and Killian Duffy were a further 32 seconds behind the winners to take 3rd overall and maximum Dunlop Championship points. Aaron was crowned as the national champion at a ceremony in The Raheen Woods Hotel. Aaron being a son of the legendary Austin MacHale, who was in Athenry with the rest of the family to celebrate the victory on Sunday last at The Raheen Woods Hotel.

John Spain and Keith Sheppard who were the 2006 winners of “The Ger Conroy Memorial Trophy” did not contest the 2007 rally. This left the contest for best Galway Motor Club crew, wide open with the spoils eventually going to Sean Lyons and John Devine who brought their Impreza home in 1:07:56 and 15th overall. They were presented with The Conroy Memorial Trophy by Ann Conroy.

Mike Bird and Kevin Keane in a Subaru Impreza WRC were also in contention for the Conroy Trophy and finished 20th overall in 1:10:34. Pat Spain and John McHahon overcame a couple of mechanical problems to take their Ford Escort Mark 2 home 21st overall and first in class 13. Neil Pearse and Enda O Leary in a Honda civic took 3rd in class 11 and 32nd overall. Neil having built a new car for the event following a previous accident. Philip Conneely and Michelle Crowley in another Honda Civic were 2nd in class 2 and 37th overall. James Power and Declan Kelly had a good day out in a Ford Escort Mark 2, to take 2nd in class 10. A number of crews had an earl exit from the rally for various reasons, thankfully no serious damage or injuries were sustained. Over 30 local Galway crews competed in the rally.

The weather for the day was beautiful providing dry stages for some super rallying action. Victor Farrell and Noel Lambert with the help of a huge team, of Officials and Marshals ran an excellent event.

The Conneely family who run Loughrea Plant Sales &Hire were the main sponsors for the 4th year running. The committee of Galway Motor Club would like to thank Michael and Philomena Conneely and their family. Galway Motor Club and Loughrea Plant Sales would like to thank The Gardai and Galway County Council for all their help with the rally. Finally and most importantly a very special thank you must go to the residents who live on the stages. We are very grateful to them for allowing us to close public roads to run the rally. Overall it was another very successful weekend of Motorsport which continues to put Galway on the National Stage.

O'Mahony and Higgins finish 12th on Galway Summer Rally
Carrigaline driver Brian O’Mahony and Kiltimagh co-driver John Higgins made a successful return to Dunlop National Championship action as they finished 12th overall in the Galway Summer Rally on Sunday (26 August).

O’Mahony and Higgins also won class six as they brought home their OM Concrete Products and Fitz Samuels Insurance-backed Super 1600 Renault Clio a comfortable two minutes 16 seconds ahead of the Clio of Mark Sheahan/Johnathan McGrath as well as being the first two wheel drive car on round eight of the series.

The 120km Athenry-based tarmac event did not run entirely smoothly for the crew.  They had to use a spare gearbox in the car after damaging theirs on Rally Finland earlier this month and, because of the different ratios it had to their regular box, it meant that they did not have the top speed to suit the fast stages, causing them to lose time.

The car was also filling up with dust, left over from Finland, on the long, fast straights, impairing O’Mahony’s vision, but the pair still managed to lead their class throughout the entire event and claim their fifth class win out of the six championship rounds they have competed on this year.

“The rally went well other than the two problems we had,” 22-year-old O’Mahony said. “The different gearbox meant we were losing a good bit of time across the fast stages but it couldn’t really be helped.

“The dust coming up around the inside of the car, that was being kicked up after being left over from Finland, was making it very hard for me to see and it was getting in my eyes but we still managed to beat all of the Group N cars on two of the stages, so we were very pleased with the rally that way.

“It was also good to get a dry rally in as well and to take maximum points yet again in the class.”

O’Mahony and Higgins will next be in action on the penultimate round of the championship, the Clare Stages Rally, on Sunday 16 September.

O'Mahony and Higgins return to Dunlop National Championship action on Galway Summer Rally

Carrigaline driver Brian O’Mahony and Kiltimagh co-driver John Higgins will return to action in the Dunlop National Rally Championship next Sunday (26 August) when they contest the Galway Summer Rally.

O’Mahony and Higgins will once again get behind the wheel of their OM Concrete Products and Fitz Samuels Insurance-backed Super 1600 Renault Clio for round eight of the series following a short break from the championship.

The crew’s latest outing was at World Rally Championship (WRC) level as they competed across the gravel on Rally Finland earlier this month and finished 64th overall and 13th in class A6 following an eventful weekend.

The pair head back to the Dunlop National series next weekend in second place in the class 6 table, with O’Mahony 11th in the overall drivers’ standings and Higgins 12th equal on the co-drivers’ leaderboard.

After claiming class wins on four of the five championship rounds they have completed this year, O’Mahony and Higgins are targeting more of the same on the 120km Athenry-based tarmac event as the season nears a close with just three rounds remaining.

“Our aim is the same as before, to just win the class and take the maximum class points,” 22-year-old O’Mahony said.

“I have done the rally once before, so I’m slightly familiar with these type of stages.

“Apart from not finishing the first round of the championship in Mayo and then not getting an entry for the Cavan Stages everything has gone according to plan this season but there are still three rounds to go in the championship and as we all know, anything can happen in rallying.”
