Irish 205 Challenge - MAHON MAGNIFICANT
Round two of the Rory Galligan Rally Irish 205 Challenge took place on the Birr motor clubs Roscrea stages rally last Sunday. Nine crews made the start, with three notable non starters of Kerrill Waters, Paul Conlon and Damien Mc Guaran all on the events reserve list.

What has now become the norm on these I205C events, stage one chaos, happened again with no 1 seed, the Mayo motor club junior champion Matthew Murphy/ John Ryan going off just after the halfway point, and being hit by the following car to boot. Also in trouble was Norman Dunne/ David Collins who picked up a stage maximum when they went off and could not get back on for over twenty minutes. Barry Mahon/ Ollie o Grady set the fastest time, 8 seconds up on DJ Browne/ Torloc O Reilly with Kenneth Keyes/ Tom Maguire 19 seconds back.
Dermot Mc Neill/ Patrick Lowbridge, Donal Crooke/ Mark Feeley and Craig O Rourke/ Diarmund Murphy all taking it a little to cautious in the changeable weather conditions and dropping time to the top three.
Stage two was cancelled so battle resumed on stage three, but gone out was Niall Lynch/ Derek Malone with engine trouble for the second rally running. Mahon again topped the timesheets, this time 10 seconds up on from Keyes who was 5 up on Crooke who had finally woken up. O Rourke and Mc Neill were separated by just a second,
with Dunne again losing time visiting the ditches. The biggest loser was Browne who went off when his car filled with oil smoke.

Further time was lost sorting the problem on the stage.
Mahon continued to set the pace 8 second up on Keyes who was up at the mid point of the stage only to spin at a hairpin junction later in the stage. Browne was back on the case just 1 second back with Crooke a second slower and McNeill a further 3 seconds back, complaining of a down on power engine.

At the second service, Mahon lead Keyes by 37 seconds with Crooke in third. The rally moved to two new stages for the afternoon, and this saw Crooke set his first fastest time in the I205C, 1 second up on Keyes who was 2 se conds quicker than Browne with Mahon a further 2 seconds down. Mc Neill, Dunne and O Rourke just could not match this pace and dropped further back.
Mahon returned to the top of the times on stage six with a vengeance, taking 15 seconds off Keyes and a huge 29 seconds from Crooke, both cursing their choice of tyres.
Out of the rally went Dunne who rolled at a snails pace but could not get his car back on its wheels. Also out with electrical trouble was Browne after his best showing to date.
Keyes pushed hard through stages seven and eight, taking 6 second from Mahon, ut it would not be enough to shake the Dublin man from taking his first and well deserved win in the I205C by 41 seconds.
Keyes finished comfortable in second with Mc Neill overhauling Crooke for third on the final stage when the lack of a map light in caused trouble reading the pacenotes.
Mahon also won class ten and finished in 49th place overall.

Next I205C rally is the Midland stages in Roscommon on April 29th.

Birr Stages Rally 07 is go.
Birr Motor Club will host the first round of the West Coast Championship on the 25th of February. The rally will be based in Grants hotel in conjunction with Roscrea on line again this year. We are delighted with the welcome we receive from Grants hotel in Roscrea and look forward to running our event from this base again in 2007.

Birr and District Motor Club are very happy to introduce a new co sponsor for the event in the form of Midland Tyre Services. Midland Tyre Services are the biggest independent tyre dealers in Ireland. Their premises at Borris-in-Ossory is known as Ireland’s No 1 truck stop.

The rally itself will consist of 4 stages repeated twice. 2 Stages repeated twice in the morning and the other 2 stages repeated twice in the afternoon. Service will take place at the mart in Mountrath after every 2 stages.

Scrutiny for the event takes place in Stapleton's bakery on Saturday the 24th of February. Scrutiny will take place between 3.30pm and 8.00pm. This is situated on the Roscrea bypass between the Limerick roundabout and the Mc Donald’s roundabout. This will be signposted. (don’t forget you’re fireproof underwear)

Stage 1 and 3 is 19.4Km’s in length and sponsored by Paddy Carey Haulage.
Stage 2 and 4 is 13.6Km’s in length and sponsored by Doheny Bros Construction.
Stage 5 and 7 is 19.8Km’s in length and sponsored by Kelly’s Bar, Borris-in-Ossory.
Stage 6 and 8 is 19.8Km’s in length and sponsored by A & R Poole sand and gravel.

This year, our event secretary Gillian has been kept very busy due to a very large number of entries received for the event. As we can only start 151 cars, there is going to be a lot of very disappointed competitors. We have seeded the 151 cars with a further 120 on reserve. Entries were seeded in order of date received, with priority entries included. Birr Motor Club seen this as the fairest way of doing this. Apologies to those who are on reserve, but with crews under pressure to get cars ready, you’re number could be called.

We kindly ask that any competitor who is seeded in the main field, and are unable to make the start line to inform the club at their earliest convenience. This gives competitors on reserve a fair chance to prepare for the event.

We look forward to the weekend of the 25th and we wish everybody involved a safe and successful weekends rallying.

Sleator Auto Midland East Rally Championship
2006 saw the second year of the highly successful clubman championship which based in the Midlands region over 5 events and sponsored and supported by Mullingar Dealership Sleator Opel. The championship ended up with a final rally battle in the Baltinglass Hills in Wicklow and saw Mitsubishi Lancer crew John Kelly and Robbie Shaw emerge victorious and take the 2006 championship spoils.

The championship returns in 2007 again supported by Sleator Auto Mullingar and hopes are high for a championship with the same level of excitement as the inaugural season. This year sees the championship grow to encompass a new round with the exciting addition of the Birr Mini Stages on the 15th of July. The opportunity became available at the end of the 06 season for an extra round to join the championship and the Birr Club were quick to come on board to become an extra part of an thrilling and competitive clubman championship in the region.

Sticking with the tried and tested format as introduced in the inaugural year 2005 which made this a championship that appeals to clubmen, the championship will be exclusively for Clubmen, in that WRC type cars are not eligible to score points.

Again as per the 2006 ethos the championship is class based with points scored as per class finish therefore giving a class one competitor an equal footing on overall standings with a competitor in class 9 and vice versa.

So the scen;e is very much set for the 2007 season, hopes are high that it will deliver even more than the exciting battles and finale of 2006. The favourites and challengers will be lining up in Birr in late February and battle will commence once more, stand clear Irelands premier Clubman championship is coming to a ditch near you!
