205 Challenge Report
After a long wait, the first round of the 2007 Irish 205 Challenge took place on ALMC mini stages rally starting from the city north hotel just north of Dublin.
Four stages in changeable weather lay ahead for the twelve registered crews who made the start, seven returning from last year, joining five new drivers, some who had never taken part before.

A fierce battle at the front was expected from the more experienced drivers, but stage one would see Barry Mahon/ Ollie O’Grady retire just over a mile in with driveshaft failure. A little further up the stage Donal Crooke/ Mark Feely attacked a bale chicane too fast resulting in a burst radiator. A huge disappointment for both teams, having put a great effort in during the winter lay off.

Finishing the stage but also in trouble were Niall Lynch / Derek Malone with gearbox woes a nd Mayo motor club champion Matthew Murphy/ John Ryan with a burst water hose. This crew would return for the last two stages and set two second fastest times on their first front wheel drive event and are looking forward to their next rally.

Back at the top of the timesheets were last year’s pacesetters Paul Conlon/ Dermott McDermott setting a time of 11.23 with Kerrill Waters/Ulton Mc Gowan just 5 seconds down. Dermot Mc Neill was next on 11.36 with Norman Dunne/ Norman Dunne and Kenneth Keys/ Arleigh Skully separated by just 2 seconds. Craig O’Rourke/ Diarmud Murphy and Damien and Thomas Mc Guaran, both contesting their first rallies finished the stage, both reporting plenty of moments on the slippy surface.

On stage two Waters would go quickest, despite suffering from a very sore back. Keys and Dunne were next, now only one second apart. Conlon would lose 25 seconds when he hit a bale chicane. O’Rourke also visited the scenery, but third placed McNeill would park his for the day, stuck firm but no damage. Conlon continued to drop time on stage three with two spins and could only manage third fastest. Waters setting fastest time again and continued to lead. The Keys and Dunne battle ended when Dunne planted his car into the hedge and out of the rally.
Keys held third place to the finish in the RGR hire car. McGauran and O’Rourke also kept their heads together when the weather changed for the worst on the final stage.
Waters would back off allowing Conlon to score his second fastest time of the day. Waters won out at the end by 32 seconds from Conlon, finishing inside the top forty.
