From its inception in 1976, Mayo & District Motorsport Club has played an important role in supporting and developing motorsport activity in the county. Originally founded as Ballina Motor Club, in 1999 the club changed its name to more accurately reflect the broader area from where it draws its support. Over the years, the club has organised many different events including multi-stage and single stage rallies, forestry rallies, autocross events, night navigation events, autotests and even fuel economy runs!
30 years on, M&DMC is in fine health, with interest and involvement in the club at an all time high. There are presently in excess of 150 members, most of who are actively partaking in motorsport competition. In 2006, the club organised and ran six events including a round of the national rally championship, a single stage rally and 4 loose surface autocross competitions. Members get together on the first Wednesday of every month at 9.30pm at the T.F. Royal Hotel & Theatre. New members are always welcome.
