Luceys fight, Carroll shines.
The sixth round of the Jerry Murphy Tyres Autocross Championship took place on Sunday last in Cronins pit Killarney. Thankfully the forecasted rain stayed away and the marshals, competitors and spectators had a bright warm day for racing.
The temperature at the front of this meeting was more than warm-it was white hot.
The brothers Lucey from Ballyvourney had a no-holds battle with the younger James prevailing on the second run by 2.2 seconds with a time of 3.47.73. Ger suffered a puncture on his first run and was unable to start the final run, so James fastest time from the second run was the fastest of the day. It was his fourth win of the year and so far he is unbeaten.
If there was a man of the match award in autocross it would have gone to Rock Chapels J.J. Carroll. Carroll was back after a few years sabbatical but he showed he lost none of his old touch. Driving a nimble Peugeot 106 Carroll had steering problems in the first run and did not record a time. With the car fixed he scorched around the pit to record a time of 4.12.75. On his third a and final run he succeeded in going even faster with a time of 4.07.11-enough to clinch the fastest saloon category and fifth overall.
